Fed Up

(Source)
Every now and then, Google and my machine, powered by Windows 10, will get into a pissing contest.

Google will refuse to search for anything and often will just declare itself "unavailable."

I know it's there, because I can pick up my Android phone and voilà, Google works just fine.

I suspect Microsoft of refusing to play nicely with others. Microsoft Edge will work just fine, except that, as a search engine, Bing sucks. Sorry there it is, I had to say it.

I am not a big fan of Microsoft. Before you point me at other operating systems, stop. In reality, I am not a big fan of computer software. It will stab you in the back every chance it gets.

Why?

Well, as a computer guy I know why. Nothing is ever done, there is always one more tweak that will make everything better. And guess what? That's like chasing unicorns. It ain't gonna happen.

Well, this too shall pass. But for now, I am too pissed off at Google and Microsoft to even contemplate writing a post. I have been wrestling with my software "tools" all afternoon and I've had quite enough thank you.

I refuse to participate in this dumpster fire.

Every now and then computers piss me off. Saturday night was one of those days. So for now...

Fire truck Google.

Fire truck Microsoft.

Grrrr...

  1. Sarge, I feel your pain. We've been doing On-Line State testing for 15 years now. It has NEVER been problem free. (Professional opinion: It will NEVER be problem free.) This year it was Microsoft Updates. Even though we PO'd our energy management guy and turned on and left on the computers for the week prior, NOOOOO the updates didn't happen until the kids were in the midst of the test, then they installed and rebooted. Which caused them to kicked out of the test.
But, do our beloved teaching staff blame Microsoft, or Pearson (the test software maker)? Nope. Juvat, how (to quote a great American) did you fire trucking manage to fire truck up the administration of this fire trucking test?
I pulled out a pencil and piece of paper, looked her in the eye and said, "These don't require updates"

    Teachers love me!

    1. I figured you'd get it, being the guy everyone wants to blame when the vendor keeps doing less-than-smart things.

FWIW, Google is behaving today. (It did give me the chance to check out MS Edge, not as good as Google, way better than IE.)

  3. Yep, sometimes it is just better to pull the plug and take a break from the computer world. Computers gonna do what computers gonna do.

I do like Juvats example of providing an alternate to computers- paper & pencil!

It is Sunday and some flowers need smelling Sarge- take a day off. :)

    1. On this day The Missus Herself and I went forth for to perform the Annual Cleaning of the Pond. A lovely day, cardinals singing, temps in the mid-50s, a fine Spring Day here in Little Rhody!

  4. Yup, same here. Luckily, I found a game, that the wife likes on mint. So got to dual boot hers, then her Facebook looks the same, as her old style, Im and such all work the same. I am good there. Even works away from home. Lucky there. But my win10 set throws fits....have to update, soak up the bandwidth, yadda, yadda, adinfinitium. Durn, won't say firetrucks, retired fireman, so durn FORDs.

  5. I just equate all that back to the days when, somehow, the guys in Engineering would manage to drop the load and we would have to restart every piece of gear that used electricity on the ship.
I hate to think what would have happened if we had 'puters back then

    2. Skip - Dropping the load happened to the South Dakota off Guadalcanal. Washington had to go against two Japanese battlewagons, a few cruisers, and a passel of destroyers, with just a few destroyers as escort. Admiral Lee pulled off a victory, but at a heavy cost. Damn but you destroyermen must clank when you walk!

(Apparently the CHENG tied down some CBs on a low power board, when a surge tried to trip them, the surge went through the whole ship!)

  6. I was turning left across traffic this morning, stopped in the center turning lane, signal on, waiting for traffic to pass. an oncoming suv signalled to turn right, then came to a complete stop. The driver imperiously waved for me to go first, againt traffic an against her ROW. She waved me ahead frantically several time, then gave me the stink eye and gave me the hawaiian good luck sign, then finally turned.

    It was the methodist preacher.

Everybody is having google issues this morning.😇

    1. Ah, here in Little Rhody I call them "self appointed traffic cops." Unfortunately, somewhere in that self-appointment, no training occurred.

  8. Sarge: The one good thing you can say about Windows 10 is, it's better than 8! Every time except the last (maybe they got it fixed?) that I had to reboot after a Windows update, my laptop would lock up. The little wheel would spin for days if I'd let it! Maybe that's why I have a backup computer for my backup computer?

    1. Well, there is that.

Normally Windows 10 and I get along fine, but sometimes Google and Windows 10 get along like the Hatfields and the McCoys.

  9. We all occasionally get caught in the grasp of the gods of inanimate objects. It seems to be part of life. But I find myself raining down curses on the Wizard at Redmond with great regularity. I get that they know that many people don't regularly check and update software. But, dadgumit, it is my frackin computer, and I want to make the decision as to when is an appropriate time to download, and install. updates. There have been too many times when mere curses don't seem sufficient to the irritation and only warheads on foreheads would do the job.

    1. Yes indeed, there are days when I can almost visualize an Alpha Strike rolling in hot on Microsoft.

Thing is, they probably have an app to prevent that!

    2. Well....You know that the F-35 uses Win 10 for its OS. You can bet that the updates will happen right after it rolls in on target. "System rebooting. Please do not power off your jet. Hi.....We're glad you're here....We're just setting things up....."

    3. Well, we could always go back to P-47s and P-38s, maybe even P/F-51s.

    4. Juvat - Windows 10 and the F-35. Heh, I can see that.

    5. Paul - I wonder how many of those are left?

Never mind, probably more than we have F-35s...

    6. I've seen one P-38 in flight and P/F-51s are still flying in goodly numbers ( remember, air shows ). I believe that there are few P-47s left flying though. Mores the pity.

    7. I think there are, at last count, nine airworthy P-38s and there are at least a dozen airworthy P-47s. Over a hundred Mustangs are still flying.

  11. I don't mind Microsoft, especially the hardware, my Surface Pro 3 to be specific. Unless I drop it and am unable to use the mouse, touchscreen, or keyboard. No access to any of my files. I think to regain it will require no less than $300 for a new screen. I'll be even more scarce than usual around here.

      $300!?! Ouch.
