Gun Camera

Screen capture from the following video.
Just a quick and dirty post as I worked the night shift yesterday and the day shift today. As much as I love to blog, I also love to sleep. I had to pick one. Which means of course, you get a video.

Those of us of a certain age remember seeing the videos from Desert Storm. Grainy black and white footage of a building with a cross hair superimposed, then streaking in from off camera you see, something. Followed by an explosion and bingo, no more building. (Or tank, or bridge, etc.)

Gun camera footage (called that I suppose even if it's video of a missile or a smart bomb) has been around for longer than you might think. The following documentary is pretty interesting, at least I thought so.

Yes, I know, it's a bit long. That's what you get when Your Humble Scribe has to choose between writing and sleeping. It's not that I don't love y'all, because I do, but a fella's gotta have his beauty sleep. If you're familiar with my visage, you know I need the beauty sleep. And lot's of it.

Anyhoo, enjoy.

  2. That's a great video.

When went home on leave after DS my brother had hours and hours of the news reports on VHS (remember that quaint format?). I couldn't believe it was related to what I'd experienced! I wish I'd had a camera crew along or a way to direct record from my brain. And the proper sharing would have to include smellavision! :)

    1. Ah yes, VHS. I do remember those well. (Still have a few laying around with nothing to play them on.)

Yes, the smell. Something which can't be reproduced on any sort of existing media.

  3. Here's the next evolution of the concept, from earlier this year.

    1. Wow! Bit pricey though. ("Only" $99.99 for a box of ten?)

    2. Hypothetically supposing they did exist, ten bucks is a steal for all the impossible tech crammed in there. Pricy for boolits, cheap for a mini camera and transmitter capable of surviving thousands of G, and that many rpm. And the camera's gyrostabilized. Oh, and it has to have the same mass and flight characteristics as a standard bullet, so you have to build everything out of solid copper and lead. :)

    3. Put in those terms yes, that is pretty inexpensive.

  4. If you give me a sandwich and a beer, I can sit and watch these gun camera films until well after the sandwich and beer are long gone. It must be how progressives felt when they watched Obama pontificate and ramble on as he read from his teleprompter.

  5. So when were you going to sleep? Your first reply was at 0534 and the last in this series was at 0805. That was two and a half hour you could have been asleep.

Well, I hope you have gotten some sleep now. No reply to this rant required until after you sleep.

    1. While the blog operates on west coast time, I operate on east coast time. I actually did sleep between midnight and 0530 EDT (2100 to 0230 PDT). Enough to get me through the day. After all it is Friday.

      :)

  6. Thank you for clarifying that for me. Five and a half hours is enough sleep to get one through the work day. At least anyone who has been in the military.

    1. I'll probably sleep 12 hours Saturday to catch up.

Or not. Word on the street is that The Missus Herself has 8 yards of pine mulch being delivered Saturday morning.

      Ruh roh.

    3. I agree, five and a half hours of sleep during the workday is enough to get me through.

    4. Which is only a little less than what I average during the week.

  7. Well, I meant DURING the workday. I need about seven BEFORE the workday, in addition. :P
