Updates

You might recall that I announced the other day that we have a new author here at The Chant. (No, no, no, she hasn't written anything yet. Soon, she has promised. Soon. Well, maybe soon. Big Time returning home soon, Little Bit just finished first grade and yes, The WSO is a bit busy at the moment.)

But I have added "her" jet to the masthead, which you can also see in the opening photo. Now the original of that was sent to me by a fellow Bullet Dad (that would be the father of another member of VFA-2, The WSO's old outfit, the Bounty Hunters, callsign Bullet. Who had their very own Friday Flyby, here.) The original of that photo, I present below.

If you look closely you can see two helmeted heads in the cockpit of that inbound Rhino. The one to the right, lower down, is the pilot, the chap actually flying the aircraft. Slightly to the left and sitting a tad higher is the Weapon Systems Officer, or WSO. In this case that particular WSO is The WSO, my youngest daughter and the newest member of the blogging team here at The Chant. Who shall go by the name LUSH, or Lush. She uses either interchangeably and she came by the name honestly enough. A tale I told here.

I have also updated the text underneath the masthead to read:
The musings, rants, and dissertations of 3 retired military guys and 1 chick. Two Air Force, two Navy. Old AF Sarge, Juvat, Tuna, & LUSH.
In case you hadn't noticed that already. Now some of you might be offended by the words "and 1 chick" as being sexist or otherwise disrespectful of my daughter and other ladies who fly fast jets, fly in fast jets, or blog. Put your worries to bed, I was on the phone with Lush when I was working on this stuff and she herself suggested the wording.

Now before Juvat and Tuna start going on as to how I never consulted them when updating stuff around the blog, well, let me just say that when you're the daughter of the king, certain benefits accrue to you. Now I'm not claiming to be a king, but around here I am the head bull goose loonie who is, indeed, large and in charge. Besides, what's a little nepotism among friends?

Also, as Tuna suggested I add Lush to the roll, I have awarded him 10 Shrute Bucks. Which will be increased ten-fold when Lush writes her first post. As Juvat sent me a bottle of Scotch, he too gets Shrute Bucks, a hundred of 'em. (What are Shrute Bucks good for? Damned if I know. Any suggestions from The Chanters?)

Oh, and speaking of the bottle of Scotch sent to me by Juvat. In the post where I announced the reception of Juvat's gift, in the comments he asked me if I'd looked at the back of the box within which the gift arrived. Why no, no I had not. So I did. Here's what I found -

Look for that logo on all the finest hand-made wooden items.

And look for this logo on fine blog posts everywhere. (Well, okay, just here.)

Yes, indeed. We aim to please.

Uh Lush, you got anything for us yet? Thousands (okay, dozens) await your tales of naval aviation, motherhood, and apple pie.

No pressure sweetie. No pressure at all.

Oh, the dental appointment went well. Just thought I'd mention that. Even if I did wake up at 0700 and couldn't get back to sleep. (After going to bed a scant, six hours prior.) But I'm fine, really, I'm okay. I know you were all concerned. Well, a couple of you.

  2. Welcome aboard, LUSH! Looking forward to your postings.

  3. Waiting for Lush to find time to post. You might think about changing that masthead to : "3 retired military guys and 1 retired military lady." I'm probably to PC.

    1. She's not retired. And again, "chick" was her idea.

      You? PC? Since when?

    2. Don't feel too bad. It's starting to bother me as well.

  4. A mom of young kids who also works outside the home? Like I needed another reason to feel guilty about not posting much. Now I need to figure out how to spend those Schrute bucks.

    1. Hahaha!

Don't feel guilty about not posting much, the deal was "when you feel like it." That deal still stands.

But if LUSH can guilt you into posting more? Less work for me and your posts are always excellent.

    2. Thanks, I only do it for the Schrute-bucks.

  5. If'n y'all keep raising the bar like this, no one is going to be able to clear it. However, that said, if anyone can, it will be you four. Thanks for the post and the laughs.

  6. Sarge, I hear, from a very unreliable source, that "LUSH" is an acronym. Perhaps the Chick's first post could be the story behind the call sign, assuming the unnamed source is accurate....

    1. It is indeed an acronym and that story has been told before. Chase this link and be amazed. Or appalled, as her mother was...

    2. Thanks Sarge - my source did not relay, or know, the full story.

    3. Well, it was before she became a Bullet.

Though that squadron shall always be her favorite, as it is mine. Her former squadron mates, and their families, will always be considered family by me.

  7. "Chick" is perfect. Not demeaning at all IMHO. How proud you must be to have her join this prestigious forum of classy commentary. She will write something - right?
RE: brains in the back - only when checking out some bomber pilots who didn't like being so close to the ground at 450K.

    1. She must know by now that the pressure to post is on.

What? Who doesn't like being close to the ground at 450K?

      Oh, right! Bomber pilots.

    2. Only 450K? Dave, why you gots to be so slow? Were you coming in for a landing or something. Doesn't get that exciting until you start approaching 12 MPM.

    3. Stand back boys and girls, the fighter pilots are jousting!

    4. OK, OK, T.I.N.S., maybe I once led a flight of two Phantoms back from an Air-to-ground attack sortie at Cuddeback Range, and maybe the four of us forgot about the handles on the left on descent through about four thousand , and maybe we blasted Apple Valley and Victorville with the sound of freedom a little "boomy-like", and maybe this Fuzz was met on the ramp by my Squadron C.O., relating about indicated airspeed and so forth. My argument about using up the fuel at the end of the fiscal year so we could get some more next year was not something that had been covered at his S.O.S., or for that matter, the A.W.C. Go figure!

    5. I like it. Using up stuff at the end of the fiscal year so they don't cut it.

Of course, we only did it with notebooks and pens.

      :P

    6. Heh. We used to do that in the UK--send half the squadron up up to 20 grand in a race-track pattern "boring holes in the sky" as it was known to justify next fuel allotment (for realz! We really did that sort of crap! :) )

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
