It's All Fun and Games Until...

Hungarian protesters listening to the radio – 00:04 am, 18 Sep 2006

Ah those wacky socialists, what will they do next?
The 2006 protests in Hungary were a series of anti-government protests triggered by the release of Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány's private speech in which he confessed that his Hungarian Socialist Party had lied to win the 2006 election, and had done nothing worth mentioning in the previous four years of governing. Most of the events took place in Budapest and other major cities between 17 September and 23 October. It was the first sustained protest in Hungary since 1989. (Source)
I am surprised that I hadn't heard this story back in 2006. I need to read up on this (I mean I do seem to be going full political lately), sounds like people in some countries don't like it when their politicians lie to them.

Something we could learn from, methinks.

But like the title says, it's all fun and games until someone steals a tank!

Moral of the story? Never underestimate old dudes who once wore a uniform. (Some of them remember their training!)

    1. The museum which had it apparently kept it in running order. The video explains it but not in great detail.

    1. It's going to be "Biloxi hot" here as well.

This morning it's still very pleasant.

    2. Meh. Been 2-3 points higher than Biloxi hot here. Yawn.

Of course, I say this after putting 1" of foam insulation into the window behind the blinds. Still need to insulate the door. (The insulation has dropped the temp of the room by 4 degrees, and keeps it from overheating the rest of the mini-casa.)

  3. Humm? Interestingly, name a government that has not lied to the citizenry? There are none. Unless you count, those that formulated themselfs from a lie. Sso all forms of governce are bad? I would agree that some are bad, and that leave a exception, there are some that must be good? But, is that a function of the leadership, not form? Good leaders inspire a form. Even in a republic.

    1. Ah, but this one admitted it, also told the people that their government had done nothing for four years.

With most governments you have to figure that out on your own. Sometimes it isn't as obvious as one might think.

  4. Everyone that wants a tank should be able to buy one. A load of rocksalt out of a 90mm tube says "get off my lawn" with authority. I always liked the looks of a halftrack....

More history?? More reading? More reading..... good stuff!!

  5. My wife and I were in Budapest in 1994 and really enjoyed the trip. One of the few places I've been to on the continent that I'd willingly go back to. Very vibrant scene - but you could tell by looking at the people. Who had been around under the thumb of communism - they walked with their heads down and shoulders slumped. The young people were all full of themselves (what young people aren't?) but in a good way - confident and optimistic. So it does not surprise me that they got fed up and let those who would be their masters know that a line had been crossed. Oh by the way, the funniest thing I saw in Budapest was a 'tricked out' Trabant - all duded up, it was hilarious!

  6. Hey Old AFSarge;

It is on my bucket list to go to Eastern Europe, I went as far as Plizen in Czechoslovakia after the wall fell in 1989. I also was in East Germany and East Berlin during that time. Would like to see how things have changed since that time, and back then the women I saw in Czechoslovakia were hot, I also was young and really paid attention to stuff like that, LOL

  7. My guess is that just about every Cold War Warrior here was glued to their TV when the wall came down. I might have cheered a little too. Neighbors claimed they heard something.

"Never underestimate old dudes who once wore a uniform. (Some of them remember their training!)"

Indeed. Some may even keep their skills current. ;D

  8. Sadly, my skill set isn't much needed when the reaction that the green new deal is a lie, according to AOC's chief of staff, is finally reported my CNN & MSNBC.

I was a nuke aboard the frigate Bainbridge...

Yes, all governments lie. But those that lie for the sake of wresting power from the states, respectively. [And] from the people, should be loathed, despised, overthrown, and the liars punished without mercy.

  9. Not all populaces react the same when recordings of Politicos lying to them are released.

Else, well, the nation would have burned under LBJ's "We'll keep them ++++++ voting..." comments, or Barky the UnMagnificent's "You can keep your..."

But let one good president say something like "If you don't like it here..." and watch every good little socialist go arioting...

  11. The Hungarians found out they were lied to and they protested. We KNOW our government lies to us and we continue to vote for them.

  12. I'm not going to offer my thoughts on this subject as they ( my thoughts ) would likely get me and everyone else here in trouble. ( See my comment on previous post. ) I really, really hope that President Trump can get at least some of this mess we are in squared away; otherwise those of us who have sworn the oath shall have to turn to. To my mind, there are far too many domestic enemies of the Constitution running around loose.

    Thanks for the post.
