"The only thing go...How does that old joke go? "The only thing good about Offut is when ya get OFF-IT!" LOL.

True story. A buddy of mine (from Spokane) from college who spoke fluent Japanese and, when he was drafted, was teaching Japanese history to Japanese College students at the Univ of Osaka, went to OCS, then Intel School at old Lowry in Denver. (Did I mention he wore coke-bottle glasses?) LOL. Did the AF, in it's infinite wisdom, make use of his language skilz in counter-intelligence or anything? No, they assigned him to SAC and made him a PI (Photo-interpreter) in the targeting section of the command bunker at Offut. So.......to get out of there he posted a big anti-war poster of a mushroom-cloud and the "peace symbol" over his desk, lol . His superiors finally took notice and transferred him out and he managed to finagle a re-assignment to Japan where he married a Japanese national. (He later ended up as the State Trade Representative to Japan for Washington State after he left the AF and then retired and set up his own import/export business in Seattle.)virgil xenophonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14577165785872035948noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684531976778247960.post-46059586056742924862014-01-13T16:27:40.410-08:002014-01-13T16:27:40.410-08:00While I wouldn't call myself a homesteader at ...While I wouldn't call myself a homesteader at certain bases, I got awfully close!OldAFSargehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15935839956936191547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684531976778247960.post-40271103902299962322014-01-13T16:26:48.406-08:002014-01-13T16:26:48.406-08:00Good folks up Nebraska way. Funny yo...Four years. I actually enjoyed Nebraska.

Funny you should mention that. Both boys have "done time" in Omaha, SN1 in his undergrad days at UoN, Omaha and SN2 a three-year tour at STRATCOM. Both of the kids enjoyed their stays so much they're both talking about Omaha as a retirement destination. Go figure. I went up that way and visited but I fail to see the attraction. It might be sumthin' that grows on ya, like athlete's foot.

Ah, Fort Collins. That's a very nice town, too. I considered living there... seein' as how TSMP lives there now... but decided not to do so, coz the temptation to kill someone who really needs killin' might be too strong to resist. I wouldn't do well in prison, bein' the smallish kinda guy I AM.

Great post... ya done good.Buckhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05319116022465066060noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684531976778247960.post-38319861299346362222014-01-13T14:39:02.823-08:002014-01-13T14:39:02.823-08:00Thank you for the pictures; my dad's family wa...Thank you for the pictures; my dad's family was (say a hundred years ago or so) from Woodford, VT. I've never been, and don't know if any kin still live there. His pa and grandparents traveled to Missouri in a covered wagon in the 1880s (my Grandpa was born in 1876), and I don't think any of us who are descended from him ever went back.
It's nice to see pictures, though.
