Damn...
Actor/comedian Robin Williams entertains the crew of USS Enterprise (CVN 65) during a holiday special hosted by the United Service Organization (USO). (US Navy/Photographer's Mate Airman Milosz Reterski)
A brilliant man. A very, very funny man. Yet... No one knows the demons which stalk another man's soul. Dear God, we will miss him. A lot. RIP Robin.
...I've had occasion to see the Demons up close and personal in those close to me... for them,....nightmare doesn't even begin to describe it. I was trained to deal with the possibility of people throwing bombs, bugs, or gas at me - I can deal with THAT, even if it's just to know when to get under cover and stay there until the Alarm Red gets cancelled. To see those you love and cherish and promised to protect go down...that's a horror movie that doesn't end with the lights coming up and everybody going out for burgers. You can't run, you can't hide them, and you can't stop it. Robin had everything anyone could ask for, and yet the Demons still eventually wore him down. That is the tragedy here, and in so many others. May he rest.
I think Mork and Mindy got me through Pilot Training. Coming home and laugh my you know what off relieved a lot of stress and got me ready for the next round. So, Rest In Peace.
So horribly tragic, his poor children. He was a one in a billion talent who shared it so freely...did he never save anything for himself? "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may...". Indeed Mr. Williams...indeed.
The comedian Russell Brand has written of Robin Williams' death that we tend to forget
"That all around us people are suffering behind masks less interesting than the one Robin Williams wore?"
Indeed, Robin William's death is being marked as broadly as it is because his mask was entertaining, wildly and widely so. But for every artist - and there's a lot of them - who have been able to take financial and emotional advantage of such a mask, there are millions who cannot.
The classic definition of tragedy is the exposition of how that which makes someone great can also lead to their downfall from greatness. In that sense, Robin Williams' death is truly a tragedy.
The genie is finally free.
ReplyDeleteWell said Tuna.
