The unwritten motto of the Philly Shipyard's civilian workers was to do the best job for those sailors who would depend on what we did to stay safe at sea, or to go into harm's way.
And it was a point of pride that we did that even knowing that when the Kennedy sailed down the Delaware river, we would all be laid off.
Yup, it's a point of pride with the good ones.

ReplyDeleteIt's not a Navy thing, but USAF TAC, I think, but "We fly and fight, or support those who do" is pretty good summary of the teamwork involved. That includes both uniformed personnel and most civilians on the team, be they DOD employees or contractors.

Two raced up to her bows as soon the gangway was in place, anxiously examining the twisted steel. Then they clapped each other on the back, shouting for joy. Their welds had held...
