I've a nodding acquaintance with death, via my ailing heart. In fact, I almost left this world a few weeks ago. Am still recovering from that particular go-around. As to what I think about dying . . . I'll let author James Lee Burke tell you:
(From his novel, "Swan Peak.")
"At a certain time in your life, you think about death in a serious
way, and you think about it often. You see your eyes and mouth
impacted by dirt, your clothes a moldy receptacle for water leaking
through the topsoil. You see a frozen mound backlit by a wintry sky,
a plain of brown grass with tumbleweeds bouncing across it. . .

. . . When you see these images in your sleep or experience them in
your waking day, you know they do not represent a negotiable fate.
The images are indeed your future, and no exception will be made
for you.

During these moments, when you try to push away these images
from the edge of your vision, you have one urge only, and that is to
somehow leave behind a gesture, a cipher carved on a rock, a good
deed, some visible scratch on history that will tell others you were here
and that you tried to make the world a better place."
snuffynyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12843569994073955970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7684531976778247960.post-25936339354949653092015-10-27T09:46:40.754-07:002015-10-27T09:46:40.754-07:00Good reminder. This lesson started for me 15 years ago when someone close to me died a violent death.

She had no idea that with that particular day it would be the last day on earth for her.

And she left no will.

Her sister was rummaging through her belongings trying to find some clue as to her financial life.

And living though this I learned that an astounding percentage of people who pass leave no will - 60%-70%?

Leaving the state to decide who gets what.

That happened to a distant cousin of mine.

Brilliant neurosurgeon and if that weren't enough, got tired of the way medical malpractice suits were going so she gets a law degree to work as an expert witness.

Killed one late afternoon on the road.

She had a will, but it wasn't updated to reflect the current times.

On Lex, who regrettably I came to know after he left, I have thought of alternative scenarios - being killed on th I5 with his motorcycle he loved riding. He wrote about at least one time that nearly happened. I thought of his flying for high performance jets 20 years doing some dangerous things - carrier landings - live SAM sites where they want to kill you - and he makes it.

Only to leave with a stupid weather and fuel scenario.

Or my own father, who in WW2 volunteers for the 82nd Airborne - 1943. Gets his jump wings, and on another jump at Benning helps a friend with something and falls out head first, getting his knee torn in the static line.

While in the hospital, his unit goes on to Sicily and has 80% casualties, either from that fight of with further fights in the near future. (never got the whole story)

Meaning that if he hadn't been injured in that jump at Ft Benning I probably wouldn't be writing this.

As far as Taj and Lex they were doing what they wanted to do and none of us have any idea when or how our end will be.

I just don't want to be hit by a garbage truck or a drunk driver, and after due diligence - situational awareness - there is still an unknown random element in life that is out of our control.

But you can control 100% what happens to your estate should you leave unexpectedly.

And many don't.
