"In 1492, Columbus sailed upon the blue", Washington crossed the Delaware and Lincoln freed the slaves, usw, usw, usw.<br />My first year of college, I had an American history teacher who disabused me of that notion. He showed me that history was not a settled thing, but different and sometimes conflicting theories, not necessarily as to what happened, but what it meant, when viewed as a whole. And while it is true that "History is written by the victors", it is also written by subversives, malcontents and academicians (but I repeat myself!) bent on imposing their ideology upon the historical record and "proving" themselves correct.
