By the way...

Couple of things, first of all let's all welcome Lou...

Gotta love the fact that Lou's avatar is one of these...

Lockheed P-38 Lightning

Have to like the "About me" quote as well...

If it doesn't burn gasoline or gunpowder I don't need it.

Can't argue with that!

So number 42, er, I mean Lou, you are now the FNG. Dave (aka 41) you can put on your real name tag now.

Here ya go Lou -

Oh yeah, the other thing, if you haven't read Dave's series of posts he mentioned in a comment the other day, what the heck are you waiting for? (Note that, it's a series. Keep reading and clicking "Newer Post" until you've read the entire story. And yes, that was directive in nature. Don't forget the comments, Virgil Xenophon makes a cameo or three!)

I mean it's about daring aviators and F-4 Phantoms! Here's the link and one of Dave's pics. Go, go now. There will be a test. (And Buck will be grading punctuation!)

  1. Welcome Lou! I Just got back from the Chinese laundry outside the compound, where the tailor does patches at a reasonable rate and low and behold - I'm no longer the FNG. This particularly poignant since my call sign is "fuzz". Older guys who were fans of Beetle Bailey will understand and someday I'll have to write a story about that.
But I digress, Lou - you will love it here! You know that. I believe that the addresses where you are to send the Guinness are on file somewhere. Too bad for me, I wasn't FNG long enough to arrange shipment.

    1. Lt Fuzz!

I so get that. (I was a big Beetle Bailey fan back in the day.)

  2. Pretty sure I've been airborne in that specific Phantom 68739. Think it was assigned to the 80th when we were there.

    1. I know (pretty sure) that I've worked on that jet. She went to AMARC on 17 Jan 1989. Still there AFAIK.

  3. Thanks Dave and thank you OldAFSarge! What a great welcome, and to be an FNG after so many years! I've been jumping over here for the Friday Flyby's from CW's Open Road and determined it was time to throw myself in with those of my ilk. I was four years a Gunners Mate on a tin can, 68'-72', and the F-4 photos bring back some wonderful memories. My dad was an armaments chief on B-25's in the south pacific and he used to show me his photos of the Mitchell's and his and my favorite, the P-38. I built a lot of models of those two when I was a kid. Thanks for the great place to hang out....and I'll stock up on Guinness in the mornin'.

    1. Small world, I have two two kids who were tin can sailors at one time. My Uncle Louis was in the Army Air Forces in the Pacific just like your Dad.

My son (The Naviguesser) did his enlisted NROTC cruise with the Gator Navy - USS Oak Hill, LSD 51. When he came back he told me, "The heck with being an officer Dad, I want to be a Gunners Mate!" When I pointed out the difference in pay, he continued with the program. But some GM on the Oak Hill impressed the heck out of him.

Guinness is great, but some of this crowd like Jameson's, and Virgil can't live without his Barbancourt. (I know, they're a picky bunch!)

Guinness is HIGHLY over-rated. I likes me some stout every once in a while but I never go for the Guinness. There are more and better stouts out there, like Young's Double Chocolate Stout. About which... we just had to toot our own horn, yanno?

It pays to be picky. That's the way you find the best things in life. ;-)

    3. Over-rated by who? I have enjoyed Guinness for quite a while. Everyone has their favorites.

      (Are you taking notes Lou?)

    4. Over-rated by who?

The Usual Suspects come to mind... i.e., Lexicans. ;-)

  4. Interesting... are you guys trying to take over or what???

  5. Copious notes taken here. Regarding the Guinness, the best I ever had was at the Globe Inn in Dumfries, Scotland with my wife and daughter. A wonderful feeling that.

    1. Good man, you'll fit in well here.

(My best Guinness was on tap, in London. Small pub on Carter Lane, not far from St Paul's. Good times.)

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
Can't be nice, go somewhere else...
