Trees and Stuff

The maples just down the street from me. Starting to turn they are.
There's been a nip in the air around Chez Sarge lately. I've scraped the first frost off the wind screen and some folks claim to have seen snow in the air last weekend. I can't claim to have seen that but who knows? Perhaps I just wasn't paying attention.

On the way home from work on Friday I noticed some colorful trees in the neighborhood so I broke out the cell phone camera and hung my arm out the window. Point and shoot I thought, keeping my eyes on the road, unlike some, I also stayed at or under the speed limit. Which is 15 miles per in these parts. Well, in my neighborhood to be exact.

So there I was, photo recon Sarge, driving up the street, cell phone swayed out to port, thumb held down on the virtual button which takes the photo. Can't say many of the pics turned out all that well, but a few did and are worthy (in my own estimation) of sharing here at the Chant.

Every year when the trees lining this street change I try to remember and bring something to take a picture of them with. They are such a stunning mixture of red and cold (er, gold - bit of a subconscious slip that) that I am always impressed.

So much so that it drives the idea of using my cell phone camera right out of my little pumpkin head. But not this year! For the first time in sixteen years I remembered to deploy my camera.

To the right of that white van is where I saw the deer a week ago. Remember?

I want to announce that there are going to be some upcoming changes to the blog. Maybe. I'm thinking about reformatting things a bit, it's something I like to do from time to time. There are also a couple of young fellows I want to put up there in the Pantheon (which is what I call the header, ya know, that there fancy picture up at the top).

I also need to figure out why some folks accessing the blog via the iPhone have troubles. As I understand it, it seems the dang thing will shrink everything over to the left of the phone's display. I've seen some oddities on my Android accessing the blog from Facebook on my phone. (Hey, when I'm at work I like to check what's going on with my friends, don't judge me. Besides it's how I get pictures of my grandkids!)

So you may or may not see some changes to the layout, I'll try not to make it suck. Your feedback is always welcome. Even if I don't always act on it.

Now I gotta go do laundry. Seems the inexhaustible supply of underwear The Missus Herself provided for me has finally run out. Didn't see that coming!

Anyhoo, my sources indicate that the love of my life returns to Little Rhody before Halloween.

Am I excited about that?

You betcha!

Sarge will be rolling in hot!

  1. I live in an amazing house, if I put my used clothing into some crazy thing my wife calls the lawn dree shoot, the clothes will magically return either to the closet, or the drawers, and the clothes will be clean. I am not exactly sure what to do if the magic stops, I guess I will have to return to washing clothes the way I learned at boot camp in Great Lakes. (now where is that ditty bag and those clothes stops)

And yes, when I read the caption to the first photo, I used the Yoda voice in my head.

    1. We have a magic closet (which I think is broken). You throw your dirty clothes in there and magically, they reappear, cleaned and folded in the dresser or hanging in the closet.

I think my wife knows how to fix the magic closet...

It's that second ingredient in the mixture that I find vexing! :-)

    1. Um, er, fixed that, but left traces for all to see the subconscious inserting itself into my writing.

Yeah, the cold ain't too far off. That, I can wait for...

  3. Showtime, eh? Or did you intend to extend your metaphor that far?

I often have the same problem with taking pics of gorgeous scenery. It's hard to tear myself away from the strong and heady drink of beauty to fiddle around with some man-made contrivance. Wish there was a way to digitally capture from the ol' squash. On the other hand, probably a good thing that capability does not exist...

I like the idea of digital cranial captures, but there is much up there which should remain unseen. It would have to be very selective.

  4. Trees turn orange and red for a reason. Orange and red are the colors of warning. Trees turning orange and red are God's way of telling you you're in for 3 to 6 months of shit, depending on where you live.
When I lived in Florida I missed the change of seasons about as much as I missed getting kicked in the groin. But the charming missus couldn't stop whining about missing the fall colors and I had to move back north to shut her up.
Yeah, it's pretty, in its own way. So is a charging elephant, till it gets to you.

      Truth.

    2. The last thing my wife said to me as she got on the plane to PCS to DC was "Well, it'll be nice to have seasons again." When the Blizzard of '96 hit and we were shoveling snow off the driveway for the third day. I asked her "How did she like those seasons now? Heckuva snowball fight broke out about then!

    3. @ Old 1811 - I get the metaphor, I'll be all poetic about this stuff until the first big snowfall hits!

      @ WSF - 3 to 6 months aye.

@ Juvat - Not much of a diplomat are you?

  5. Yep, it IS that time of year, and some nice pics! Good luck with the reformatting.

    1. No firm ideas yet, it will probably be a few days before I settle on any changes.

  6. I intended to take tree pics today, but they didn't look that great, yet.

  7. We are beyond peak by a week or so and moving rapidly into Stick Season. It's warmer this week and the snow is gone, even off the higher peaks on the Green Mountains. Not looking forward to what's coming. When the whole family was skiing, including the extended family, the winters blew by and were looked forward to. Now, not so much. I'll be looking forward to Christmas week down not far from Juvat.

    1. Stick Season. I like that.

I remember skiing, my knees became not fond of that sport. My wallet as well.

    2. Drop me a line if you're in the neighborhood. Sarge has the Email Address.

  8. Well, anything you want to do to your blog is A-OK by me. I'm a hideous slug of a blogger these days. I post perhaps three or four times a month, if tht, and often it's just to send someone to someplace else where I've been paid to write. I used to do it all gratis and I enjoyed it a lot more when I wasn't trying to scrape a living out of it.

As for your trees, they're lovely. We've had very little color in our neighborhood up here in MA. It seems that fall is happening everywhere but in a four block radius of us.

    1. We'll take what we can get from you Suldog, it's worth the wait.

The foliage has been spotty this year, some spots are gorgeous, some are dull and drab.

  9. Nice trees. They are red for such a brief time but they sure look great.

Blog changes are something I haven't yet wrapped my axles around. Some day, maybe. Just work hard to avoid any digital avalanches. :)

    1. Periodically I get the urge to change the layout of the blog. Sometimes I'll have a couple of beers and the urge goes away. I like fussing with the blog header from time to time, sometimes the change is nearly imperceptible. FWIW, I too like to avoid digital avalanches.

    Love the trees.

    1. I would love to claim that I had something to do with that.

Alas, I have not had the chance to explore that issue yet. Seems as if Apple beat me to it, perhaps a Blogger update behind the scenes.

Bottom line, it's good, no matter who gets the credit.
