One Year...
My Mentor, My Friend
I
remember firing up the old computing apparatus that day and noting that
my friend Buck had a new post up. As was my wont, I headed over to theExile in Portales to see what new gem Buck had posted.
Here's what I saw...
Five days later, he was gone.
I didn't see that post above until Friday night, there had been no word on Buck's condition since that Saturday post. Personally I was in the holiday zone, I had just posted this, not knowing that he was gone.
Though it's been a year, I still look for his comments here at The Chant, he left quite a few. Then there was "The Blog War" which we both had a lot of fun with. (If you want to follow the whole thing, chase all the links and hit "Newer Post" when appropriate. Some of our respective readers thought we were both going insane. My question was "Going?")
It's a beautiful thing when your friends make such an impact on your life! And I remember the blog wars. Hahaha...those were quite entertaining! I love you Pops and am always thinking about you from all the way across the country...
Makes me wonder if one should set up a "In the event of my death" blog post for someone to post when that day comes. Sort of like a "The reports of my death are not at all exaggerated." A bit morbid I suppose, but it might be appreciated by one's followers. When my mother passed she left a detailed list of instructions, but also words of guidance to her kids.
I miss him, almost every day. He didn't miss too many opportunities to comment over at my blog. I didn't miss many chance to snipe at him. For two guys who never met we had some fairly common memories.
Been thinking of him a lot lately. He is missed, definitely. Like Lex, he lived more than a full life and from that we should be inspired to go and do likewise. In the meantime, I shall toast the good man with adult libations this evening. As is proper.,
Buck and I were the same age (roughly by a few months) and our outlook, taste in music and temperament were probably formed by the times we lived in and the generational cohort we grew up with. Our shared likes and dislikes were so similar that it was scary. He once commented that we were "brothers from a different mother" (or was it me?, lol) Like others here I miss him and his distinctive wit and "take" on life and think of him a lot. RIP Buck....but I'm STILL pissed you left us in the lurch, Sarge, don't go yet either--not too many muy simpatico landing strips left.
I wish I had had the time to stop by la casa movil back in the day and knocked over a few with Buck. He was a character. It's funny how many places we had in common but we missed each other every time by just a little bit.
Those were rather dark days. "I'm still here." Haunting.
ReplyDeleteHang in there. The people that we meet are a major part in making life more than existence.
Indeed they are Shaun. They also make it worth living.

ReplyDeleteThanks sweetie! Today's the big homecoming, hope that goes well!

ReplyDeleteI keep thinking that I need to make sure the kids have the "keys to the blog," just in case.
DeleteI like the "Open in the event of my death" post, slightly morbid but I think you're right. There are some who might appreciate that.

Same here Skip. He's not really here but he's not really gone. If'n you catch my meaning.

ReplyDeleteAs will I dear Kris, as will I.

ReplyDeleteI have no plans for an imminent departure, Virgil.
DeleteSame goes for you, stick around. Aren't many guys left who went "Up North" back in the day.
