Quickie Tuesday
Things are starting to green up nicely here in Little Rhody. The ground phlox started a bit slowly last weekend, then this weekend - BAM! They're breaking out in a riot of color. Okay, so it's mostly lavender, I guess. Being a guy I only see in primary colors. Think ROY G BIV. As you can see around the pond, we've got tulips of red and yellow. If you look really close, there's a single daffodil which somehow wandered in. Yellow, that's definitely yellow.
The Missus Herself (with an assist from the kid next door) has mulched much of the garden. There's a few spots out front that didn't get new mulch, they had to make do with last year's. Even though it seemed like a metric butt ton of mulch to me, my better half indicated that she was being fiscally conservative this year and didn't get as much mulch as she really wanted.
The land line is ringing off the hook with calls to support this or that candidate, for today is Little Rhody's turn in the basket, er, I mean, presidential primary. I swear I have received enough Comrade Sanders flyers in the mail to cover that parking lot up above. But those go straight into the recycling. Then I go inside and wash my hands. Twice.
Anyhoo, you get a short post today (not because of the primary, it won't take me that long to cast my ballot) mostly because I had to get my Game of Thrones on last night. It's a new season with many new faces as the author likes killing off his characters as fast as they show up. Or so it seems.
Don't judge me now, I've read all the books, probably all that there will ever be as the author seems enamored of his new found celebrity and seems content to let HBO finish off the series. Oh well.
As to the books, if someone asks me what they're like I tell them, "Think Lord of the Rings without any orcs or elves or wizards. No poetry, no uplifting of the human spirit, no... Hell, think the Somme Offensive or Verdun. Everyone dies."
But still and all, I find it entertaining. Beats the news at any rate.
Hell, a sharp stick in the eye beats the news these days.
And do it goes. (He said wondering how many extra hits that catchy title is going to generate. Tee hee. Yes, I'm bad...)
I looked at the photo that contained the bridge and the statue.
ReplyDeleteThat reminded me of the time when Forrestal was anchored out at Taranto Italy getting some major repairs, and we had visited the EM Club at the Italian Navy Base.
If you are waiting for the liberty boat, and you walk away to recycle the beer, you discover that you can write your name in the water and the stream of liquid makes the water glow. Strange and beautiful.
I wonder what was in the beer.
DeleteForrestal used to be tied up to the pier at NS Newport. The old girl was sowing her age when they towed her away. Sad to see her go, sadder still to see her rusting away.
Taranto is where the egg that became December 7 was laid. There's naval air magic in that water.
DeleteIndeed there is!
DeleteBetter yet, the Brits performed their magic in biplanes!!!
Why is it a metric butt ton of supplies is never, and I mean NEVER, enough. On my little project, I bought way more lumber than I thought I'd need and still had to make two more trips to Lowes for more. Didn't make any bad cuts that I had to do over. I think the universe and all thing in it are expanding and I failed to take that into consideration in my cipherin'. Yeah! That's it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, why is that?
DeleteI rather like your "expansion of the universe" theory as an explanation as to why multiple trips to the hardware store are necessary before sufficient quantities of material are on hand to complete a project.
I think we should call that the Juvat Theory of Insufficient Stuff or JTIS, pronounced, of course, as Jay-Tiss.
This insight could lead to an important discovery. How do you schedule time at the LHC? We need to look for the anti-Higgs, which would theoretically remove the mass characteristic from matter. This could also lead to the discovery of a lot of missing singleton socks and mittens. Pretty much have to call the particle the Juvat.
DeleteMy word man! I think you're on to something. Concur, the new particle shall from this point hence be known as the Juvat!
DeleteNo orcses, Precious? Then why bother watchingses?
ReplyDeleteI know. No nasty, tricksie hobbitses either.
DeleteGollum, gollum...
It seems like metric is never enough.
ReplyDeleteThe political scene here is still very quiet, except when certain candidates show for expensive dinners.
I'm guessing that's gonna change momentarily.
T it still mostly green, but I noticed yesterday the virges of the freeway are starting to turn 'golden' already.
Oh... you forgot to mention the dragons.
DeleteYeah, I read the books, too.
Metric is never enough. It's why I insist on units of Imperial Measure.
DeleteAh yes, GoT does have dragons. While The Hobbit had a dragon, Lord of the Rings did not. So GoT has that going for them. (Not to mention Daenerys Targaryen, she beats Elvish women any day of the week. Just sayin'...)
DeleteIt seem there are a number of k!~k@$$ ladies in GoT, not just the Mother of Dragons.
DeleteIndeed there are. Some of them are downright mean and nasty though.
DeleteI read the first three books as they came out and just got tired of it. It was the "Lost" of its time with an endless and totally pointless plot. OTOH, I have never seen a single show and maybe I'm missing something.
DeleteI just got a wheelbarrow, for the mulch that's in it.
Book four was a struggle, it was very Lost like (for the reasons you state). Book five was much better. I doubt there will ever be anymore books. The author is old and content to be famous. HBO will finish the story, who knows how that will turn out. (I'm thinking of how well they did Boardwalk Empire, I mean that show ended with finality. As opposed to Deadwood, a brilliant show with an ending that really sucked.)
DeleteSpeaking of wheelbarrows, I fondly remember my first wheelbarrow. Taking it home, it was so shiny. Then I realized that I had top move rocks, dirt, and yes mulch. She's not so shiny anymore, but still functional.
Happy mulching Cap'n!
Gardening is much better for the blood pressure than contemplating politics, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteTrue statement!
DeleteShe is talented. I especially like the tree fence next to the parking lot.
ReplyDeleteAnother of her many projects. She amazes me.
DeleteI have a picture (somewhere) of what the backyard looked like when we started working on it. Just have to find it.
