Social Media

Your Humble Scribe does maintain a "presence" on social media. Facebook to be precise, or koobecaF to use the term the Naval Air Cowman (aka Shaun) coined some time ago. I actually have two accounts, one in my real name and another using a spin-off of my nom de plume, Old AF Sarge. Or OAFS as Dust and others like to call me. Hhmm, are they saying I'm an oaf? Nah, couldn't be, but I do like the play on words, intentional or not because, truth be told, I am sometimes an oaf. Oaf, as in a stupid, uncultured, or clumsy person. synonyms: lout, boor, barbarian, Neanderthal, churl, bumpkin, yokel.

I am often clumsy, sometimes uncultured (as in not knowing which fork to use), and at times in my life been accused of stupidity. Usually by one of the progeny in their youth when introduced to a new household rule which I had just acquainted them with, to wit...

"That's stupid, Dad."

The implication being, of course, that as the rule was stupid, and as I had promulgated said rule, then ipso facto I was stupid. Quod Erat Demonstrandum. Oafish behavior, neh?

Anyhoo, social media and my place therein. I do believe that, for the most part, koobecaF is an ancient Egyptian kind of thing wherein we write on walls and (apparently) worship cats. It is also a place for people to post things of which they have little understanding and pass along nonsensical memes promoting some ridiculous and quite possibly seditious, ideology. That goes for both sides of the aisle, this behavior is not limited to liberals, conservatives, or others of that ilk.

I go to koobecaF every day, I post a link to the blog for the daily post and check for new pictures of the grandkids. Political stuff I will shy away from, just because. Makes my head hurt to see just how naive and silly some folks are. Of course, I don't watch CNN for much the same reason.

Tried Twitter because all the kewl kids were doing it. I "tweeted" a few times and quickly lost interest. Typically what I wish to say takes far more than 140 characters. It's why I have a blog, so I can be as wordy as I like. (Of course, I also don't have to be as organized.)

When I started this post, I thought that having a definition for the term "social media" up front might be useful. It was, but it was also somewhat ironic. I give you a screen shot of what I found -

Coincidence? (Source)
Odd that the Word of the Day would be "uncouth" isn't it? Or is it?

Hhmm...

  1. Thanks for the post. Tried that thing once, lasted maybe two days. Not my cuppa.

  2. I don't call it FF for no reason. No interest.

    1. Oh, and Twitter. Any topic on earth that can be adequately discussed in 140 characters isn't worth wasting time discussing.

    2. Twitter - Other than giving the President a means for making progressive heads explode, I don't see the point.

But I like what the President is doing with it, it's fun to watch progressive heads explode.

    3. I'm with Juvat, 140 characters is merely a waste of time but I AM amused with exploding progressive heads!!

    4. Steam gauge-era "tweet": Fused Ordnance On Target On Time.

We were hip and kewl before these millennials stopped crapping in their drawers (if they ever did).

    5. @Russ - 140 characters isn't even enough to get warmed up!

    6. @Shaun - Steam gauge era tweet - hahahahahahahahahaha!

      Love it.

  3. Couth used to be one of my favoritest words.
    Used it in sentences like:
    "You ain't got no couth!"
That's pretty mild compared to what we find on social media today.

  4. Like much of new stuff, Facebook is great when used correctly (or for your own needs) Keeping in touch with friends, family and watching cats do stupid stuff. Ir I want politics I can find it on TV,so I know unfollow any source that is political in nature (yes I have been guilty...trying to stop) after several days I can now visit f-book and not have my BP go through the roof.

As to twitter, 140 characterless would not cover one of your of topic wondering thoughts, never mind make an actual point...you do like your words...please do not read that as a criticism, I enjoy your style.

    2. I love comments which have an errata comment attached. No really, I do that myself.

    3. I have friends who post political stuff from other sources, so I just block those sources. I have another friend who posts inane political opinions of her own creation. Those got to the point where I just "unfollowed" her. We're still friends but I no longer see the inane political stuff, unless I go to her page.

      Facebook, it's complicated at times.

(Style, I have a style? I suppose lack of a coherent style is kind of a style. Hahaha!)

  5. One of the perhaps unintended advantages of the social media is that you often get surprising insight into the psyches of the meat people you know. Which makes it easier to decide who you'll actually allow into your house.

  6. Having grown up with a speech impediment, I'm still not a brilliant one on one conversationalist but koobecaF
gives me a place to express myself coherently. Although as you already know I mostly use it to post really
corny humor. Most of the political posts and meme's I see just make me bite my tongue and move on but occasionally
I will see one that creates an itch that I just have to scratch.

One on one conversation is not my strong suit, I always want to yell "fire truck" and run and hide. (Too many grown ups out there.)

    3. I once took the opportunity, during the annual Volunteer Fire Department's Chicken Feed, to yell " MOVIE ", in a crowded fire house.

  7. I frequently tell people that I only use anti-social media. I read a few blogs, comment anonymously, am a member of a few online forums, and reddit.

  8. I was on koobecaf for a while, until they suspended my account and it wasn't worth the effort to fix.
I have a presence on Twitter, primary to promote my blog, but I also find it a challenge to express entire thoughts in 140 characters. (Brevity being the soul of wit)
I also started an account on Gab, where a lot of folks have migrated because of censorship problems on Twitter. Gab gives you 300 characters, so let the loquaciousness roll!

  10. Being a contrary old cuss (other use less polite terms for ish), I am on FB mainly to poke (P)regressives. Twitter? Wouldn't know it if it fluttered in front of me.
