It's What's For Dinner

From time to time I like to share what The Missus Herself cooked for me for dinner.

I do this because I like to remember those meals and because damn it, my wife is an amazing cook. She can do American, she can do Italian, she can do Korean (duh), and many other dishes besides.

We had meatloaf at my Mom's once upon a Saturday in the not-that-long-ago-but-probably-was-at-least-a-decade-ago time. I raved about it as my mother's meatloaf was a favorite growing up.

A couple of weeks later when I came home from work, there was meatloaf. Seems that The Missus Herself had obtained the family recipe and wanted to try it. Damn, it was good, as good as Mama used to make (Mom doesn't cook as much as she used to). As time went on, the lady of la maison tweaked and adjusted that recipe until it was better than the original.

All she has to do is taste a dish, and if she likes it she's already thinking of ways to make it her own.

Anyhoo, that picture with the caption "It's What's For Dinner" was posted on koobecaF the other day. (Calm down, I don't post my entire life over there, just the odd bits and pieces to show the world that I'm not all Guinness, bangers, and mash, though that is a favorite.)

Well, a buddy of mine, let's just say he's close to my generation, not old mind you, but experienced, posted this in the comments -

I'd never really noticed the resemblance before but, uncanny innit?

If you don't get the reference, well back in the day, Mr. Elliott had hisself a couple of commercials touting the benefits and deliciousness of beef -

Now my feminine acquaintances tell me that Sam Elliott is what a lady might call "hot." So, in order to provide equal time to the guys, here's a great Doritos commercial. Combines a few of my "favorite things"...

Heh.

Light posting for a bit, real life, in the form of free HBO and trying to binge watch Westworld before I have to pony up cash money to keep it, means you might be getting short rations until the weekend.

Then again, who knows?

Oh the meal? Bulgogi, steamed brown and white rice, with a bit of barley added, and pickled pig potatoes (which are defined as "inferior or small" potatoes, "fit for pig food," silly Westerners, they taste great pickled!)

Yum!

  1. First meal on the Kun was at the O' House (the Korean restaurant on base) and was Bulgogi. I was hooked. Hard to find any Korean food, much less Good Korean food, around here. So....Does that recipe you linked to have The Missus seal of approval? If so, I may try my hand at it.

    1. No, that was just a link to let the neophytes know what bulgogi is. I plan on asking for her recipe this weekend. I will be sharing that with those who desire it. In other words, expect an email.

      :)

(There was a Korean restaurant on base? I had no ideer. Of course, I could get that at home, the only time I ate on base was at the NCO Club when I needed a burger or a steak. She hadn't learned those dishes yet.)

    2. It was (37 years ago), on the other side of the main N/S Drag from the NCO club about a block. I suspect it was a Korean "training wheels" for Americans. Bulgogi and Yakimandu were my go to's there.

    3. Okay, that rings a bell. I vaguely recall that now.

Ya had to mention that it was 37 years ago, dintcha?

      (Feeling old I is.)

    4. I just finished a short book (Piano Burnings and other Fighter Pilot Traditions, interesting and humorous book.) where the author had gotten out of the Air Force after flying the F-22 for a few assignments. That got me to thinking, the F-22 is older than the F-4Ds were that I was flying at the Kun ('68 models in 1980). THAT made me feel old!

    5. Damn! I looked it up, the Raptor's first flight was 07 Sep 1997. The year my son started college, a year and a half before I retired. So the F-22 is 20 years old? "No way" is my gut reaction, "way" is what reality says.

And I think I see a must have book in my future!

  2. I'd take it right kindly if that recipe managed to navigate fiber all the way to my inbox!

We thank you for your custom. It's a great dinner choice.

How 'bout a Finnish chick trying to guess KPOP songs? https://youtu.be/YM662amBcK4

    Yeah, not exactly riveting entertainment.

    1. Fun stuff. (Damn! She's cute.)

KPop was born long after we left the Land of the Morning Calm.

Yes, expect an email. (When I get a chance to get the recipe.)

    2. If I was a member of the great corporate patriarchy, bent on enslaving and murdering all members of the professional victim class, I might say, "Dang, now I know what them Finns was a-fightin' for!" Butt of course I would never even think that, let alone say that.

    3. You've got fiber out to your Ranch? Dude! That's sweet (and expensive).

    4. Just noticed that. Yeah, pricey I would think.

  3. A chance to get the recipe? I've only had it at a Korean restaurant in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I loved it but it is hard to find Korean where I live near Fort Worth, Texas. You have to drive about 50 miles to Dallas for good Korean cuisine.

    1. From the looks of things I might just have to do my very first recipe post. With apologies to Brigid over at Mausers and Muffins, of course.

I will be asking the love of my life for her bulgogi recipe this weekend. I hope to have that published here NLT Sunday. But we all know what Robbie Burns said about plans yes?

But, Mousie, thou art no thy-lane,
      In proving foresight may be vain;
The best-laid schemes o' mice an' men
      Gang aft agley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
      For promis'd joy!

      Stand by...

    2. Don't forget to tell her that you plan to make and publish a video of her preparing the meal. Great Chefs like a little bit of warning before the film crew shows up.

    3. EASY Shaun, we WANT her to give us the recipe, remember?

    4. Shaun - I would be dead before I hit the floor were I to suggest, nay even hint, that such a thing was planned.

    5. Ah, once again I find that just because I've had an idea doesn't mean I've had a good idea.

    6. Still in the game though. Still thinking, still breathing, it's all good.

  4. Ok, another great post. You don't seem to know how to do any other kind.

On my three week vacation in the Land of the Morning Calm ( Team Spirit 86[?]), I had bulgogi. Quite tasty. One of several new experiences on that trip.

    Thank you for the post.

    1. Team Spirit? I remember those well. Did a few of those during my tour in Asia.

    2. And my tour at Moody, Kadena, and the Pentagon.

    3. Pentagon guys do Team Spirit?

I can see a good side and a bad side to that...

(Moody and Kadena stand to reason.)

    4. Might have to post on that, but yes.

  5. Westworld, huh? I found it to be extremely disappointing. Oh, the special effects were light years ahead of the original, but with all that star power, special effects and full frontal nudity, I kept waiting for the big reveal. Meh. Mildly entertaining, but they managed to keep even the nudity from being sexy. C-
I did watch Billions for free on Showtime. I liked it. Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti in a battle of wits. Wasn't sure I'd like it, but ended up binge watching first two seasons.

    BTW, the food looks delicious!

    1. Yes, the episode of Westworld that I watched last night was all "Meh" until near the end of the episode. I mean come on guys, 50 minutes of boring to get 2 minutes (if that) of "Wow!" A bummer.

I may have to watch Billions, I like Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti, fine actors.

      The food was incredible.

  6. As for your resemblance to Sam Elliot......Dead Ringer! Well...except for the hair....and the mustache. Other than that, Dead Fire truckin' ringer! No Kidding!

  8. I'm a big fan of Westworld. Seems that most of my shows I'm into these days are either on Netflix, one of the movie channels, or some other streaming service such as Amazon. Times have changed for sure.

    1. I have DirecTV and am seriously considering trimming that down to the bare bones. Price has nearly doubled over the past three years for the package I have.

Besides which, I do everything on my computer these days. The TV is for sports (rarely) and the occasional BluRay.

  9. A new bulgogi recipe is always a good thing. Let's hear it. Is there a Coke involved? Had a buddies wife in Killeen who switched to Dr. Pepper and I was amazing. She wouldn't give me the whole recipe though. Just had to hide the Dr. Pepper can

    1. Neither Coca-Cola nor Dr Pepsi is involved. I'm guessing one of those would substitute for the sugar. Some add peaches.

I had to post one from the Internet, seems The Missus Herself, not being an engineer, sees no need to write things down. It's all done by instinct. The recipe I provide a link to in Sunday's post is very close to how my wife makes it.
