R.I.P. Gunny

GySgt R. Lee Ermey
March 24, 1944 – April 15, 2018
(S0urce)
First thing every morning I hit the folks on the sidebar.

Sometimes you see something that just wrecks the whole day.

Don't remember where I saw it first, but a bunch of my favorite bloggers had the report.

R. Lee Ermey - gone at the young age of 74. Complications from pneumonia...

Well, that just sucks.

Yup, Gunny Ermey has entered the clearing at the end of the path.

Damn, but I enjoyed his acting and his outlook on life. Gonna miss that Marine.

Semper Fi.

Oorah!

  1. I think the only thing he might have regretted in his long and enjoyable career might have been that hairpiece he wore in Se7en. Then again, with his sense of humor....

    1. And it wasn't even his desk...

He did have an excellent sense of humor.

  2. Hey Old AFSarge;

Yeah, he will be missed. He was one of the good guys.

  3. Drill instructors (drill sergeants for us Army guys) have to be both performers and teachers--they have a short period of time in which to train people for jobs that literally involve life and death. Another famous but little-known Marine DI turned showman was Don Adams, who credited his comedic timing to his service as a DI after surviving Guadalcanal....

    1. Wow, I had no idea about Don Adams' Marine time. A different generation from today's Hollywood crowd.

  4. Jack Webb was another, but I don't recall him ever doing comedy....

    1. Jack Webb played a D.I. in a movie, The D.I.. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII but washed out of flight training, he later received a hardship discharge as he was the sole support for his mom and grandmother.

  5. I think the strangest (and most chilling) quote about an actor who had 'done things' during WWII was Christopher Lee. Supposedly, Peter Jackson (the director) was telling Lee (who was playing Sauron in the L(b)ored of the Rings movies) to imagine what it felt like to shove a knife between someone's ribs. Lee's response was, "I don't have to imagine." Brrrrr....

But, yeah, another great one down. Screwed over by Hollyweird after making them tons of money. Still probably the best portrayal of the old school DI ever filmed. Either Heaven or Hel (if you believe in the whole Norse Pantheon thingy(Note: Hel is where non-battle deaths go. It's not bad, just cold and boring compared to Valhalla.)) has a very good addition.

Man, I gotta go line up a marathon now and toast the fallen.

    Damn.

  6. Truly a sad day. I had the honor of meeting the Gunny at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro a few years ago. He was a fine gentleman, and an inspiration for thousands of people.

  7. Every time I come across the Rifleman's Creed it reminds me of R. Lee Ermey. R.I.P. Gunny, you will be missed!!!!

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

Without me, my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than my enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will…

My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit…

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will…

Before God, I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but peace!
