Ahem...

[tap tap tap]

"Is this thing on? It is? Okay. Can you folks in the back hear me okay? Cool. Let's get started."

Feeling a bit squirrelly today. I have a date for the eye surgery, it's going to be next Tuesday, the 2nd of October. Yay me.

Yup, I'm slightly freaked out over having to have surgery on an eye. I mean, they're pretty sensitive things right? So getting poked, prodded, and the like, in the eyeball area seems contraindicated, am I right? But both Doc One and Doc Two agree that it's necessary before my eye gets any more screwed up. 80% chance of the vision improving after the surgery.

Without the surgery, yeah, 0% chance of improvement. 80%, I'll take it. Having fuzzy vision on my port side is no fun, no fun at all.

After the surgery, Doc One says it's two to three days of me lying flat on my belly. Lying down is something I do very well. So while it will probably be annoying, it won't be as bad as having my belly ripped open and then sewn back up, figuratively speaking. As I've been there, done that. Don't care to do it again any time soon. (Like maybe never.)

Anyhoo.

I have some television viewing recommendations, for those who have  Netflix:
  1. Kim's Convenience
  2. Luther
The first is a situation comedy about a Korean family living in Toronto. They run a convenience store, their family name is (well, duh) Kim. Which, for those who don't know is the most common family name in Korea.

Three of the four Kims are actually Korean, so there's some authenticity going on there. Two seasons are available, so far. Very funny, even The Missus Herself approves!

The second show is a BBC product which stars Idris Elba, a very fine actor. He plays a DCI (Detective Chief Inspector) who works on a unit which investigates murders and serial killers in London. It's a very gritty crime drama which, at times, reveals the writers' ignorance of police procedure, or perhaps it's ignored to tell a good story. Bottom line is that John Luther (Idris Elba) bends the rules at times, a lot really, but he gets results. Seems that half of the police force is out to get Luther while the other half is helping him solve crimes.

I almost quit watching it on the last episode of the first season, but Mr. Elba is such a good actor, I couldn't abandon him and his show. It's worth your time.

Anyhoo, that's all I've got for now. I'm rather hoping I had a good night's sleep by the time you read this, sleep has not been forthcoming as of late. Nerves dontcha know?

Even Your Humble Scribe gets antsy about things from time to time. Like lasers and needles near my eyes.

Ah well, this too shall pass!

  1. Sooner is better than later, giving less time to fret, wonder, and pace.

Unless you're already a stomach sleeper, while it sounds like something you can do lying down, two days of enforced face-downness could get old quick :) I get real tired when propping myself up on elbows to read or look at a tablet. So headphones, audio books, and tunes would seem to be in order.

  3. On your belly? For two days! That's my most uncomfortable position. You may need to get one of those massage tables.

  4. The hardest part of any surgery, for me, is the wait beforehand.
The two days horizontalocity would drive me nuts.
Prayers that all goes as planned and time flies.

  6. Best wishes to you on your upcoming surgery. Apprehension waiting for surgery is the worst. Now for a true story to lighten your mood. Last evening I was sitting on the outdoor patio of my favorite blue-collar bar near one of the AF bases. A pleasant-looking middle-aged lady who none of us had ever seen before came outside and took a seat at another table. Just being friendly, I invited her over to join the stammtisch (regular customers) table and we introduced ourselves to her. Very intelligent lady, great personality, works on the base and is excited about her work. Later in our discussions, she mentions her father was a fighter pilot and even wrote books about it. I say, "Really? Which books?" On her phone, she proceeds to pull up the cover of her father's first book... it was "Rolling Thunder" by Mark Berent! My jaw literally dropped! I told her I have that book on my Kindle, she smiles and then the discussions really got rolling (no pun intended). Wonderful evening with great conversation and the stammtisch table appears to have a new regular. All this from inviting a stranger to join the discussion. :-) - Barry

    1. Thanks Barry.

As to meeting the daughter of one of my favorite authors? Awesome, just awesome. Give her, and the rest of your regulars, my regards.

    2. yes that reminds me. I phoned Lex and invited him and Mary to dinner. My subtle plan was to pair him with a noted author and her husband who also writes books that few people read outside with the goal of getting him to publish. I hoped to get him to learn how easy it was to publish. He and Mary spent the whole evening regaling my sister and brother-in-law with tales of their honeymoon in France which was our favoritist place to play tourist. It was, all things considered a wonderful evening in Del Mar at Szbbicas. we did not make any advances on the book front. It was a noble forlorn attempt. but a hell of a good time.

  8. Never wanted to move my eyeball as much as the time I was getting laser eye surgery and the doc said
"Look at the light and don't move your eye." These doctors have 25 years of school and they've trained a ton as well. Hope that thought helps.

    1. I'm not that worried about the surgery itself, it's the aftermath. But we shall see. (One hopes!)

  9. If you haven't seen "Broadchurch" you should. I can think of worse things to do with several days of enforced prostration. Season 1 was outstanding, 2 not so much, but 3 was back to great. Again, you've got to accept some "author's license" with reality but it's really good. Your local library might have it. BCB

  10. Screw that, watch "The Good Place" on netflix and what was that thing about your eye? You should have that looked at pronto. :)

Yeah you also got two prayers to go in with and we're hoping for nothing but good. You know, optically.

  11. Yea!! You've got a date!! Cool! Now, comes the hard part of waiting...I hate that part.

When they found that I had a brain tumor, I just wanted it out! NOW! Please!! Had to wait a month as they put me on anti-seizure meds...no, didn't want one, never had one and I'm good with missing THAT experience, thankyouverymuch...then they asked if I wanted the day before Thanksgiving or the Monday after...duh! The day before everyone will be worrying about when to put the bird in the oven, afterwards, they will all be back to work to pay for all the Black Friday spending. So the Monday after it was. So, yes, I totally hear you on the nerves. I never wanted a spinal when I was pregnant...no messing with my spine when I was due to deliver...but crack my skull to get out a tumor...not a problem. Well, pretty much. Just wanted the thing out.

And sooner is better. Not only less waiting, but less time for more damage to occur, so a better prognosis.

I don't mean to rain on your potential TV binge party, but are you going to be able to watch/read/use your eyes a lot those first couple of days? Or are you going to be doing eye drops every couple of hours? Might want to check with the doc before ordering a whole bunch of shows/movies/etc. You will probably have the left eye patched, but many times they limit how much you use the "good" eye as well. Might want to ask.

Anyway, lots of good thoughts and prayers for 100% improvement and rapid recovery. :)

    1. I am going to pay careful attention to the doc. Whatever he says, goes. So if no TV, no TV. I'm okay with that. Perhaps I'll just sleep as much as possible. I fully expect an ordeal. But it'll pass.

      Thanks Suz.

  12. Good luck for the eye surgery. As an ex Met cop I rarely watch TV cop shows as my wife gets fed up with me shouting 'That's b******s' at the screen. By the way most of the Met Police stations I worked in were most assuredly not as depicted in TV serials like 'Luther' but late Victorian Hovels, porta cabins or anonymous industrial units in low rent parts of town.
If you want to watch some British cop series may I recommend 'The Sweeney' from the 70's. A ground breaker of its time although sub titles may be needed for the 'sarf laahndaan' accents. If you want some continental grit watch 'Spiral' or 'Engrenages' as the French call it. It shows you a part of Paris tourists don't (or shouldn't) go to. It's also one of the few TV series that shows, in my opinion anyhow, just how desperately exhausted most inner city cops are. No designer clothes and Hollywood smiles here but lots of moral ambiguity. Be warned, it's a hard watch at times but shows how the French legal system works.

Good luck with the surgery though.

    1. I understand completely. Luther is entertaining but I am under no illusion that it's a realistic portrayal of British police work. I must check out The Sweeney and Spiral, they both sound very good. Thanks for the recommendation.

And thanks for the well wishes as regards the surgery, I appreciate it.

  13. Prayers and best wishes on the surgery and recovery. I would either sleep the whole time or go bananas.

Luther made me an Idris Elba fan. I will now check out anything he is in. British crime drama is more interesting than American. Hope you find enough to keep from being bored to tears.

  14. Second your comments on Luther. Brilliantly played by Elba. Why can't we do dramas like that?
