Groan...

Looking out The Nuke's back door.
So it was back to work on Monday, after a glorious seventeen days away.

Was I thrilled to return? Yes, and no. Yes, it was good to see my co-workers (many of whom had returned to work on the 2nd of January, that is, five days before moi) but getting up early, having to shave at oh-dark-thirty, and heading out into the 20° weather was just a bit jarring. (That would be the "no" part.)

I did remember all of my passwords, which didn't surprise me, I had to exercise one of them just a few days before returning to the salt mines, er, I mean work. So I had that going for me.

Then I read Juvat's post where once again the topic of him now being one of the idle rich, er, I mean retired, came up. Am I jealous? Well sure, just a little. But I am probably going to be in the same boat a year from now.

I get odd glances from The Missus Herself when I mention retirement, she has projects, plans, and schemes which require the dispensing of cash. I just keep telling her, gotta do it soon dearest, otherwise the cash flow will drop off but on the bright side, you'll have me around to work on all those projects, plans, and schemes.

She has her doubts but I swear this work thing begins to weary me.

Anyhoo, that's a year down the road.

Your Humble Scribe avec his new cap, t-shirt, and outer wear.
The cap bears the logo of the Office of Naval Intelligence (I could tell ya but then, ya know, I'd have to ya know...), the t-shirt is a gift from The WSO, it has the Foo Fighters Concrete and Gold album logo on the front and the set list from the concert she and I went to at Fenway Park back in July on the back. One of a kind item that is. The big comfy shirt is from The Nuke which sparked this conversation -

The Nuke: "It's just like the shirt you had in Germany that Tiger peed on!"

YHS: "Why yes, yes it is, without the feline urine smell!"

The Missus Herself: "You're both idiots."

YHS: "Why yes, yes we are."

The Nuke: "Speak for yourself Dad."

But yes, it is like a shirt that our late cat Tiger decided to urinate on to signal that he wasn't feeling all that well. It's what kitties do. Too bad they can't talk.

Speaking of urine...

No, I won't tell you how on the Sunday we arrived in Alexandria, one of The Nuke's pooches was upset with something, probably all the extra bodies in the house, so she decided to leave a present for an unsuspecting human.

Have you ever sat down and wondered why there was a puddle on the inflatable bed in the guest room. A very cold puddle which smelled suspiciously of urine? No? Trust me, avoid that at all costs.

Oops, I did tell you, Gomen nasai!

"I swear it wasn't me, there are no witnesses."
Kodi, the prime suspect in the puddle caper (as I like to call it).
"I want a lawyer, wasn't me, but I want a lawyer."
Bear, a somewhat credible witness desirous of legal representation.
Being on vacation was great, sitting in front of this most nights was oh, so pleasant.

In our host's living room.
While being back at work (groan) pays the bills and racks up time for retirement, I do miss Maryland and Virginia. But it's good to be home and looking out my own back door.

Cue music...

It's been some time since I've heard that tune. First time I've really listened to the lyrics. Think I'll go look at my back yard some more.

Tambourines and elephants!

  1. So, if you are back at the salt mines, send me a couple of pounds ( of salt, not ##sterling ). In a year or so, when you retire and feel like traveling, come out to my part of the world and we'll go look at aircraft and do other fun things.

    Thanks for the post.

P.S.: I seem to be up early/late a lot lately.

    3. By the by; I just went to the acronyms page to see if WUWT is listed. It is/(was not at the time I looked) not. What's Up With That?

    4. WUWT is now listed on The Acronym Page. Bear in mind that much of what I write should be taken with a grain of NaCl.

  2. Good luck with the next year Sarge, that time will fly by. Then you get to adjust to that once a month payday.......(chuckle). Both pups look a little..........apprehensive?

    1. If the first day is any guage, this year is gonna drag.

But that's only a single data point.

    2. Speaking of data points of one...Made it through yesterday without any texts, phone calls or emails. Nor did I feel any regrets when I had to drive past the old office. (It's on the way between home and the grocery store.) Back is sore from shoveling dirt yesterday, but I'm more satisfied having done that, than anything I'd done at work in the past 6 months. You'll be fine Sarge. The Missus Herself will insure that, if nothing else.

    3. Yeah, I reckon she won't let me be idle for long.

    4. "...this year is gonna drag." Does this mean you are going to wear clothes other than those you normally wear? [ I thought of another question along those lines, but I think I will keep that one to myself. ]

      Paul

P.S.: I hope that I have not crossed the line in jocularity ( or the attempt thereof ).

  3. Two friends at work retired last week. 44 years and 39 years. I'm a bit jealous as well. I'll be working till I'm ready to dirt nap. I have to do stuff, can't just sit still for long. I've thought about going back to college and taking courses till they kick me out!!

"Back to work, slave!" It's a new year's tradition at my house, too. (It's a Wonderful Life quote)

    1. My retirement plan used to be two guys and a gurney hauling me out of the building.

No longer, I have plenty to do outside of work and I should have a sufficient income to live well.

Watch the gubmint eff that up...

  4. Do you have a fireplace in your home? To mitigate the RI winter?

    1. No, but now I wish I did. Truth be told, winters in Little Rhody are pretty tame compared to further north.

    2. You could go the Franklin stove route.

    4. If you don't need the warmth of a fireplace, you could buy a large screen tv/monitor and have it show a burning fire in a fireplace. My wife finds it soothing. Side benefit: No ashes to clean up. Paul

And yes, I am rather OCD.

    6. Ah yes, our host also had his TV on a station playing Christmas carols on the big day. There was the obligatory fireplace on screen.

Definitely not the same, though somehow oddly comforting.

  5. One of our little Corgi beasts isn't fond of my son seeing how due to his Autism I'd suspect, he's a bit loud, unpredictable, and doesn't connect well with animals. She has had an "accident" twice on his bed. I fell for both of them.

    1. Fell for the couple accidents - it works.

Feel for the both of them - it works.

I have found that cats are much more understanding with Asberger sufferers. Dunno about further down the autism scale, though I have heard that really mellow dogs help surprisingly well in serving as a bridge between the person and the world.

    2. I know a guy with Asperger's, his mom says that folks with Asperger's have cat-like personalities. She has cats as well, knowing the guy, I can see the comparison.

Some dogs are very good at that kind of thing, they "understand" at a very elemental level.
