Music is a heartbeat...*

Marine Musicians, July 1922
Music hath charms-but not always.
That's why these two Marine Corps Bandsmen chose a quiet spot to tune up their instruments.

When I stumbled upon that photo on Flickr, my first thought was, "How can you tell they're Marines?" Gotta be the haircuts, right?

Anyhoo, I had started an historical post for today, then realized that I wouldn't have time to do the sort of job the story deserves (an historical event from 1944 which our Polish correspondent Paweł suggested for a future post). Why don't I have the time? Well...

Remember when this happened? (My post about my purchase of an electronic drum kit back in September, for those who don't wish to clickee-clickee.) Well...

Seems that one can buy accessories for said kit, namely an extra crash cymbal (or splash as Our Own Tuna referred to it, as he plays the drums, I'll trust him on that, though these guys might differ, book on the kit calls it a crash, I call it a crash) and another tom. (Also called a Tom-Tom, a type of drum, not a cat, nor an aircraft, nor a Tuna.)

As there are a couple of songs where having two crash cymbals would be awesome, I decided to go for a second crash, though sore tempted to get the fourth tom, I talked myself out of it. Mostly due to the cash outlay that was in it. Though the tom was the cheaper of the options, I had my heart set on a second crash. So there ya go.

It's installed, though the first chance I get I need to do some re-arranging for better feel while playing. You know how we musicians are (even the crappy ones, like me).
Heh, finally got to steal borrow one from my friend BarbaCat!
Speaking of music...

This band, it's how I roll.

End Over End
Chris Shiflett, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel & Dave Grohl

Burn all the candles out
Make a wish, but not aloud
Re-live the here and now
To see you now and then
I'm a revolving door
I've seen it all before
I will begin again
But I can't start until I've seen the end

I took a look around
I believe in hand me downs
The treasures that we found
When we were brand new
Now that we're old and worn
A little ripped and torn
One day we'll be re-born
One day I will meet you right back here

Once again
Wait
Stop me so I can begin

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

I'm feeling out of luck
Maybe I just feel too much
That old familiar touch
Will always sting my skin
The good in everyone
The ties we've left undone
The heart that moves your blood
All the things that bring me right back here

Once again
Wait
Stop me so I can begin

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

I'm circling

Hey
Once again
Wait
Stop me so I can begin

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

End over end
End over end
End over end
I'm circling

I'm circling

I'm circling

I'm circling

I'm circling

*Or a drum beat... YMMV

  1. I used to help record the Houston Symphony and Opera as well as other "shows" when I was a broadcast engineer in Houston. Chamber music, all kinds of high brow stuff. Just goes to show if you can work with technology, doors open.... Even for a professional pig poop scooper. (High Plains Hog Market, 1980-1981) The jokes they used to tell.... Oh man.... Every instrument has an associated personality that plays it....

    2 old saws:

How can you tell if the drummer's seat is level? The drool runs out both sides of his mouth. *rimshot*

What question do drummers ask the rest of the band? Do you want me to play too fast or too slow? Heh.

"millions of monkeys, millions of drums, millions of fingers, drumming on drums...." Dr. Seuss: Hand Hand Fingers Thumb (I did some post-graduate work on this..... read it to my kids after I graduated ;)

PS... re. deleted comment... Have you ever misspelled the main word in a punchline?

    1. Heh, good stuff.

As to your last, all the time.

  2. Darned hippie kids and their music! (Shakes fist furiously in the air...)

Woke up today to wife exploring indie rock, which so far sounded good. Easy to understand lyrics, good beat, better musicality than standard rock.

Just as long as your musical adventure doesn't turn into the drum version of "5,000 fingers of Dr. T."

  3. Well....Since The Missus hasn't put a stop to this, you're either getting much better at it...Or she takes frequent long trips away from the house.

    1. Yes, I was wondering that too. It must be the "over ear" headphones.

    2. Well, I am getting better, not enough that she doesn't retreat to a different part of the domicile, but she doesn't demand I go "stealth." (Wear my headphones.)

    3. Also, I tend to play when she's out with her Korean girlfriends.

  4. I fought the foo and the foo won. I got through three minutes of it this time.

I remember when the Beatles picture was on the front page of the PACAF Newspaper (actual name I can't remember). We all were horrified at the long hair! So funny to me now.

I can play a mean player piano.

    1. Three minutes? I am impressed, Dave.

Will I post more Foo? Yes. This week? Probably not. You should be safe for a while.

  5. Hey, Sarge! Thanks for the friendly theft and link!
I'd have sent you a thanks earlier today if it weren't for the aggravating problem I'm having posting replies to everyone's blogs...including my own. Juvat suggested using a different wweb browser, so here I am using IE. I prefer Firefox, but at least this is working for me.
wearisome stuff to have to read about, I know.

Keep on practicing those drums! The BEAT's gotta go on in these times.

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
