RHT447's Handiwork

Cuppla folks expressed interest in seeing some of the handiwork reader RHT447 had mentioned in a comment t' other day -
RHT447
So I am up a bit earlier than usual. A bit of heavy weather rolled through about 5 am and woke me up. Lots of thunder and lightning, some hail. Our single feline staff member does not care for this kind of weather, no not one bit. She claws at the bedroom door to be let in to hide under the bed. I couldn't go back to sleep, so got up and made coffee. Weather has moved on, feline staff has come out of hiding and wants breakfast.
Have entertained myself the last few days re-finishing and old gun rack. It's nothing fancy, just a wall mount with two uprights notched for four long guns and two cross pieces. It was gift not long after high school, and has followed me around ever since. Used these two products for the first time--
First this--
Walnut Wood Finish Restorer
Then this--
Feed-N-Wax wood polish
I stripped off the old finish first as there were some places that needed to be sanded. Wood looks great now. Like those products--just like the Karate Kid--wax on, wax off.
It has been decades since this rack held a gun. Long gone are the days when you could leave guns on display in your house. I'm going to hang the rack on a wall that can't be seen from outside, then stick an old muzzle loader rifle on it.
So here ya go!

The other side of the magazine well dust cover says "PLAN B"

Very nice work RHT447!

  2. Nice work on a classic design, RHT447. The AR ain't bad either, and I like the workbench as well! Do you have the gun to go with the linked .50 BMG hanging on the wall? :-)

  3. The grain in that wood is beautiful!!! Very nice job indeed!

Gotta be careful--juvat will have you doing his sanding and refinishing for him. :)

  4. Thanks again to Sarge for posting my stuff, and thanks to all for the kind words.

    A few more details--

I was an FFL in California (when it was spelled with the letter "C") for near 20 years. My forte was building custom AR-15's. The rifle above is my first Texas build after escaping Kalifornia.

@Tom in NC--Nope, I don't have anything chambered in .50 BMG (although I still have all my notes and manuals for working on the Ma Duce). I do have a .50 cal T/C Hawken which will soon reside on the above gun rack. When Kalifornia limited magazine capacity to 10 rounds, I started selling 10 linked .50 cal rounds as an in-their-face wall hanger. All assembled with "pre-ban" links, of course. The one you see is one I kept for myself. At one time, I floated the idea that we all should "link up" for a "rock-n-roll" party, but we never made it happen.

@Suz--Good point. I hear Juvat has contacts in the wine industry. Likely we could work something out.

    1. Contacts? No, I wear glasses. Oh...wait...nevermind!

  5. Look at that brand new fresh 3/4" plywood bench top. Never seen a drop of glue, not a drip of stain. Goodness, I'm surprised that anything has ever been fabricated on that surface at all.

You should see my work bench surface, it's dangerous. Just keep your Geiger counter away from it, you'll live.

    1. Because they just moved in to the house. You should see the previous bench that has 20+ years on it.....

    2. Hah! Well, y'all are in for it now. Scott is our oldest, chiming in to defend The Old Man.

Actually, my intent is to cover the workbench surface, mostly for spills. Something cheap and easy like vinyl flooring. Solid color, no patterns or sparklies. Those errant itty-bitty gun parts are hard enough to find as it is.

  6. One other minor note--The wood acts very much like walnut, but beyond that I couldn't say. The cross pieces are stamped in the end grain "Korea S". As I said, it was a gift to me in the early '70's.

  7. Nice work. I've got a project underway and the Feed-N-Wax looks like what I need. Thank you.

  9. Decided to check the blog again & glad I did. That gun rack......veeerry nice, yessiree. And that AR, seeing that brought a smile like the Terminator had in the second movie when in the underground arsenal and he hoists the mini-gun...... oh yah!!

  10. Thanks for posting this OAFS. I usually get busy in the afternoon, and forget to check late in the day.

RHT447, I've built a handful of AR types. That one is a looker. I'm thinking I'm not putting rail mount hand guards on anymore. I like the slick look.

And I'm glad I asked about the rack. My buddies always had those type on their wall. I never did. Very clean lines on it, and the finish is beautiful. Nice restoration.

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
