Taking a Personal Day...

Screen capture from the game.

I use Steam for most of my game acquisitions, while they've had a bunch of sales recently, I paid the regular price for this one. It's what's called an "early access" game so it's basically still in development but most of the game features are there. Paying to be a beta tester I guess is what you'd call it. But in reality, I've done it before and haven't picked a clunker yet.

This one is "so far, so good." I've assaulted a tropic isle or two with my Royal Marines and sailors. It's fun, sure it has some rough edges, what new game doesn't? But with a direct line to the developers, it's good to know that discovered bugs can be crushed before the full release.

So, I've been busy as of late. So I'm taking a personal day, read those folks on the sidebar, spend time with your family, whatever floats your boat.

I'll be back Tuesday, unless Tuna or Beans wants a turn at the plate. Juvat will get ya through Monday, hopefully his new casa is even nearer completion.

Be well...

  1. Taking a personal day is a good thing, relax and enjoy. I hope you have fast access to the web. I love living out in the country but one of the few disadvantages is slow web access. The last game I bought from Steam was 71 GB's and it took me 5 days to download it. Kendy kept complaining how slow our internet was and I didn't dare tell her it was because I was downloading a game. We both got caught up on our book reading during those five days!!

    1. My Internet is quite fast, even still I've had a couple of games take a couple of hours to download, can't imagine waiting five days!

  4. Can you make the COB drop his coffee/grog cup?

Otherwise, a game review in the FUTURE is in order.

    1. No COB on a surface ship, but make the First Lieutenant spill his wine? I'm on it.

The review will happen, POCIR. Of course, I can count on you guys and gals to remind me!

  5. Enjoy the day, but mind the gap, so to speak - hope it's as pretty there as it is here in central NC.

  6. The only PC games that have ever really held my interest are ACM flight sims, my favorite of which is EAW (European Air War). I watched your clip from Il-2 Sturmovik and it looked very familiar. I have never played Il-2 Sturmovik. Can you offer an opinion on that game vs EAW?

My EAW days went south with Win XP and whatever graphics card I had in that machine--got the dreaded "7127" error. IIRC, it was the game asking the PC if it could handle 8-bit, and the machine responding "What the hell is 8-bit?". EAW has had a long and dedicated following, still up and running today--

I think the simplest solution for me is to resurrect one of my old PC's, wipe the hard drive, reinstall Win98 and Service pack 2, and use that machine exclusively for EAW.

    1. I watched some video from an EAW session, pretty nice graphics for 1998!

Il-2 is an excellent flight sim, the graphics are excellent. While I've never played EAW, I'd go for Il-2 as it's got a better physics engine, there is naval AND ground combat going on under your aircraft, it's very immersive. From what I understand, both sims are excellent. You do need a pretty powerful machine to play Il-2. But it does run on W10, even the older versions. I have them.

It is in some ways a matter of taste. I can't judge EAW but it sure looks good considering its age!

  7. I am here to do some threadjacking, with anniversary of Fall of Berlin in 1945.
First and foremost, I am gonna bring to the fore immense casualties suffered by Soviet side in the operation:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Berlin
Even as late in the war, Germans were masters of tenacious defence, and both Seelow Heights and city itself were very difficult areas to assault. But Soviet war machine treated losses in much different way than Western Aliies, to be sure, too.
Losses in armor seem to point out to effectiveness of panzerfaust in street fighting, and presaging Grozny losses half century later... (some people never learn...)
Another thing to point out, I mentioned in comments few posts earlier, Soviets press-ganged anyone "liberated" into fighting Germans. So, to no-ones surprise, major Polish force under communist commmand was present as well:

    1. I knew that the Poles were there at the kill, didn't realize that they'd been in the fight in Berlin. Great photo of the Polish soldier with the flag of Poland atop the Siegessäule.

Sounds like an idea for a post. Dziękuję Ci Paweł.
