It's Alive! (And other happy things.)

As you can see, I am none the worse for wear. Left eye is a tad sore, and there is the eyeball surgery attack of the jelly monsters taking place behind that patch (don't ask, those who know, know), but the doc says it all went well. Felt weird, but eye surgery usually does.

At any rate, I'm patched up until 2130 local (Friday - today as I write, yesterday as you read) and have a new eye drop regime to go through. Used to pay nearly $400 for three wee bottles of the old stuff, about four bucks for three of the new. So the surgery may actually save me some cheddar in the long run. (Cheddar? What the Hell is cheddar Sarge? Well, I've been re-watching Breaking Bad, that's what Jesse Pinkman and his meth associates call money. No, I'm not on meth, just find the term to be new, different, and très amusant¹.)

I was at the doc's for all of an hour, the photo was taken at The Missus Herself's and Your Humble Scribe's post-surgical celebratory meal at Chili's. Yummy it was, I'd forgotten how much I like Mexican street corn.

Anyhoo, on to other news.

We get the bulk of Anya's food from Chewy.com, with Sasha's passing last year, we haven't been ordering as much. I actually cancelled the auto-delivery order as we had too much in stock as it was. So when I did that I explained to the folks at Chewy why we were cutting back.

When they read the reason, I got a very nice email in return, and those flowers above. All to honor our fur baby Sasha's memory. This, people, is how you treat your customers.

It's a great company, wish I'd found them earlier. Their prices are more than competitive with some of the stores in these parts and they have a great variety. Shipping takes one or two days, and like I said very responsive, great to work with.

So yeah, shameless plug for Chewy.com, love those folks.

Finally, we have my youngest grandson above, making his demands known in the toy aisle. He's either going to grow up to be a fighter pilot like his dad, or a surfer dude. Maybe both, he could definitely pull that off. Hard to believe little Robbie is almost two!

He and his sister, plus Mom (The Nuke) and Dad (Tuttle) are off to Florida for a wedding and a trip to Disney for the wee ones. A long weekend delayed by storms in the DC area (to include a tornado warning in Maryland!), the wedding is Tuesday so they've got a nice long weekend. The Nuke needs the break, she travels for the gubmint. A lot.

Anyhoo, all is well, though rather monocular at the moment. Be seeing you.

Soon, I hope ...

¹ Very amusing. I mean come on, what's a Sarge post without at least one footnote and one foreign phrase!

  2. The best part of temporary loss of depth perception is the magic and mystery of having to pick up hanging tools. My brief foray into monocular life included either missing my tools entirely or smashing my fingers on them. In the meanwhile, a hearty 'arrrrrrrrhhh' to the internet's newest pirate.
Also, today is the very first day I have ever had to wear glasses to read my laptop screen. Apparently they're no longer just for reading warning labels.

    1. Oh dear yes, my fingers are not really happy with my eyes right now.

  3. The Mrs subscribed to Chewy for or hound dog foods for several years. We too received a sympathy bouquet after Daisi Duke the house pony (mastiff/blood hound mix) passed in mid 2020. I agree Chewy has a great customer service model in this.
Do all your daily eye drops and make all your Dr appointments. Take care of them peepers Sarge!

  4. I thought there was a rule somewhere that eye patches were supposed to be black? Maybe that's after Memorial Day....
    Good to see you back!

  5. Glad the surgery went well ("saving cheddar", as I recall from reading other books, is actually a rather old phrase - at least I remember it from years ago - but I have no idea how cheddar came to be associated with money).

    1. Because our cheddar value is less.
      $ stinks.
      Somebody’s cut the cheese.

    2. Franknbean - Heh, cut the cheese, I'd forgotten that one.

    3. Sarge: Doing a bit of research on the InterWeb, it appears the the term is either credited to the end of WW II or the Reagan Administration, where cheese was included as part of the welfare food distribution. "Saving cheddar" was the equivalent, apparently, of getting your benefits or "saving money".

      The more you know...

    4. I remember those gigantic blocks of government cheese. To the gubmint's lasting shame, I actually had airmen with families who were entitled to those supplements.

  6. Watch out for the door jambs. They will scootch over and get in the way when they see that eye patch.

I find it interesting when I see what kids wear nowadays. When I was little, I had choices of barefoot, cowboy boots, maybe some hand-me-down sneakers after fourth grade. Strange what you remember....

    1. After the surgery I had to keep the eye patch on for five hours, no more. When I took it off, the world became unhinged. The left eye was no longer boresighted and I was seeing two of everything. Fortunately that situation has resolved itself. It's sore but aligned once more with the right. Lost the double vision, for which I am grateful!

I don't even remember what footwear I had as a child, I think it was sneakers in the summer, winter boots in the winter. We had Sunday-go-to-meeting shoes but those were Sunday only.

    2. A coworker was hammering nails and one bounced into his eye. He wore a patch for a couple weeks IIRC. he walked into door posts regularly. Seems without binocular vision, missing the hatch was normal. He'd catch a shoulder more often than not.

    3. Need two eyes for the best depth perception, otherwise you have to scan your head like a radar!

    4. ...(a belated comment)...In WW1, One eyed Bill Thaw was a fighter pilot in the Lafayette Escadrille. In the medical exam, he covered the same eye with this right hand, and then his left hand. Did pretty good as a pilot too...

    1. He's talking a lot more now as well, making sentences, repeating new words like a parrot, which means one really has to watch one's language around him. Don't want him talking like a sailor (or USAF MSgt) before he's three!

Chewy.com is really an outstanding organization, they do damned near everything very well.

  8. After things settled down, I got new bifocals, for the close vision, and last bit of sharpness for distant vision. These are the best eyes I've ever had. Also, fun with Halcyon.

  10. Can't say I know a lot of fighter guy surfer dudes out here, but plenty of other aircraft aviators that surf. So he can definitely be both if he flies around these parts someday. I didn't realize he had a sister already! I was only tracking kid number one from the Nuke/Tuttle division. They've been busy! 😉

  11. Hmmm, something fishy going on with our monoculared host. He writes of his left eye being sore, but the photo looks like the patch is on the right eye. Knowing he probably really does know which side is which, my guess is the photo got flipped somehow. (And looks like his shirt buttons are reversed too.)
In any case, delighted it went well and things are looking up again.
Again, praise for the eye docs everywhere! And Chewy, too.
