Well, That Sucked

(Source)
Well, I'm back ...

Meeting up with LUSH and her daughters was awesome.

The hotel, very nice.

The work?

This sums it up ...

I would say more, but ...

Too many chiefs, not enough braves, not enough preparation, and damned little listening to those who might have a clue.

'Nuff said ...

I'm out.

  1. Ugh. The perfect storm of bureaucratic project nightmare. How absolutely frustrating. I vote the universe is giving you a sign you should write full time, but that is just (selfishly) me...

Glad the visit with LUSH and the granddaughters went well.

    1. Yeah, not sure why this one turned out so bad, others in the past were far better. I think we may have had one too many assholes aboard.

    2. Sounds more like 10 too many...

  2. Ditto TB. Sometimes the writing on the wall doesn't need an interpreter. Glad you got to see the left coast fambly.

    1. That part was excellent, just too short.

    3. Depends on who's running the show, one name will kill it.

  3. In other words, typical government project.

    1. Not at all, most events of this nature in the past were far better run.

  4. Well, "diversity is our strength," so we got that to fall back on. You've done your part.

Now, get on with doing what you can in areas you can control, and quit moping. You've got grandkids to spoil, gardening to do, and diverticus stuff to cuss. Oh, and books to read and write as the inclination strikes.

    Welcome home.

    1. Good to be home, time to move on to bigger and better things.

  7. If you ever have seen "Office Space," well, I actually had one job where I was the bottleneck and had 7 bosses I directly answered to, all with wildly differing opinions as to how to do XXXX, YYYY and ZZZZ, all which were critical in getting fed grant monies for SUMPROJECT. One of the direct answerables was a fed at the agency I was doing work for from a local level, and he was the worst (the person in control of the project was great, but the 'direct answerable boss' wasn't the project leader, and I wasn't supposed to go to the project leader directly - I did, of course, behind everybody's back - using my non-work cellphone....)

So I kinda get how you feel.

"Moving on to bigger and better things." Does this mean you are contemplating ejecting from working? Or are you just that peeved off and need to take your frustrations out on a fax machine (another Office Space reference.)

Seriously, sorry the work side of your visit sucked. You usually come back from those invigorated, not peeved and pissed.

At least you got to see La Familia Lush.

  8. A wise man once told me, "When it stops being fun, quit!" You've got multiple talents, you'll find something to do that you enjoy. Go for it.

  9. I'm glad that this tasking did not consume you. I still pick up my "tools of the trades", sometimes, for home, or friends, service projects; usually costs me money. Back to snuggling, reading, writing with good bosses for you.

  10. Just make sure we all get invitations to the post-retirement celebration.

    1. I thought of that Wednesday, waiting for my plane. Had a nice view of USS Midway. Thought of Hizzoner and his sword.

  11. I worked 37 years at the same place (a scientist at a research center. Enjoyed almost every day (although there were a few rough times) until I retired. Organization was up, down, and sideways. Had my supervisor as an assistant more than once on a field sampling test. Was the "go for" for our operators doing sampling. Explaining to my boss on not doing something, because the Director (The Big Boss [looking and could act and sound like an Old Testament Prophet]) had tasked me with writing another. Good times! I spent my last months trying to pass on all I had learned to the new sharp young kids.

    1. Don't know what 37 years at one place would feel like. Never have done it.

    2. Place was kind of special. Always the same place but working on a myriad of different projects and problems over the years (like a limitless box of puzzles). There could be a new surprise every day. As time went on, I become a repository of past knowledge (as well as knowing where the bodies were buried). Bad supervisors & coworkers - I outlasted nearly all of them (not ambitious, so I was no direct threat). Curious, so I knew something about a lot of stuff outside my job description (very useful in meetings). Allowed to attend (almost) free graduate paleontology classes for years (one class/semester allowed free as a perk for Univ employees)-explaining to my boss that it kept me happy and taking my summer vacations camping on field trips [paid off when we moved into oil recovery and CO2 sequesteration]. Almost every day was fun, and I commuted six blocks to work. Good Times!

  12. I waved as I drove through RI today on my way from Old Saybrook CT to Rehoboth MA today.
Took Dad to see his only sister...she is bed bound now and memory is...um...let's just say variable and leave it at that. She recognized me right away, but it took a while for her to remember him. Glad we went, even though it's sorta hard to see how she is now.
We did Mom's Life Celebration dinner, had over 30 people show up for great food, ( The Griswold Inn in Essex CT--not cheap, but VERY yummy, and cool looking inside. Been there since 1600 and something. Wonderful servers too.) Lots of laughs, good stories, some tears, but overall a good time. Saw family I haven't seen in a long enough time that I didn't recognize a couple of cousins. Folks have gotten grey!!

My bottom line for this past week: Life is very short, and happens when you are worrying about other things, most of which don't ever happen. If work isn't fun anymore---time to bail out. There are always other opportunities if you go looking.

    1. I thought I sensed someone waving! 😏

Family is the most important thing. Though certain aspects of work aren't fun anymore, I'll have to wait and see on the rest. Still and all, I sense that it's getting close to time to call it a career, and be a full-time grandpa!
