What's That White Stuff?

OAFS Photo
Well, it's snow. That's what the white stuff is, and we got a wee bit o' that on Sunday.

Of course, the media had a field day with this "named" storm (Ember, FWIW) predicting anything from a dusting to the end of the world with 2o inches or more, high winds, freezing rain, wolves rampaging in the streets ...

Sunday morning around 0300 (don't ask why I was awake) the snow was coming down furiously, by 0600 it was rain.

As I looked out upon my domain in the early afternoon of Sunday, The Missus Herself informed me that it was going to start snowing again. Sure enough, it did.

Perhaps three inches stuck on the ground, didn't look like any problems would be had with the planned Monday return to work.

Well, the weather wasn't a problem. Me not paying attention was a problem. If you take a cough suppressant and an expectorant, guess what happens? A lot of semi-wheezing coughing which doesn't clear anything from your chest. So guess what I didn't do Sunday night?

Sleep.

I pinged my colleague at work to inform her that I would not be there, surprisingly she answered (it was around midnight). I had forgotten how the young could stay up half the night and still go to work. Heck, if I don't get a solid seven hours I'm useless. (Some might argue that even with a solid seven I'm useless. Meh.)

Once the meds had worn off I crashed hard.

Didn't awaken until 0300.

Wait, what?

That's been the story of this viral thing, I wake up at 0300, agonize that I've only slept a couple of hours, then go back to sleep.

Rolled out of bed at 0830 Monday morning, thought briefly about going to work, started coughing and said, "No, thank you."

I'll try again tomorrow.

  1. Several of the neighbors have the Galloping Crud judging from their coughing and sniffling. Don't see any wolf tracks in that white stuff Sarge although that rabbit was traveling at speed. Hope you feel better this morn.

    1. I am at work, not happy about it as last night's "rest" was intermittent. But I soldiered on ...

  3. Sarge,
Interesting, I also wake up at 0300 CST. I mentally run through the daily OPORD (issued by the warm creature snoring softly beside me) to refresh me on the “must do’s” of the day. Then fall back asleep til the 0430 nature call. RTB (the “b” being bed), and if VERY lucky sleep until 0600 +/- 5 minutes when the dogs remind me of their nature call requirement.
At that point, I surrender and make myself a cup of decaf, and start blog browsing.
For some reason evening bedtime seems to be getting earlier and earlier as time passes.

    Hope you feel better soon.

    1. I get the feeling that this is going to be a long slog.

    2. If it's like the one I got right before Christmas, it will be. Keep your chest warm, even if it means doubling up tshirts. Warm chests move crud better than cold ones.

  4. Sarge, I, too, have been waking up between 0100 and 0300 in the mornings. Most times I will eventually go back to sleep 1.5 to 2 hours later, so my choices are A) Roll around and disturb other parties; or 2) Move to a secondary location where I will still be awake but at least not keeping anyone else awake - except for A the Cat, who helpfully comes and sleeps on my chest (and may actually contribute to my eventual slumber. No idea why, I just wake up.

l seem to be turning the corner on my own infection - which is enabled by (ironically) being able to sleep. Hoping the best for you as well.

  5. I wonder if segmented sleep patterns have something to do with how our ancestors slept?

  6. Chicken soup, or at least broth, and hot mulled apple cider with brandy. Fit as a fiddle is a few days.

Seriously, get well. And good call in staying home and not spreading the Crud to others.

    1. The Missus Herself has a magical concoction which is a tea made from ginger root, dates, and honey. Tastes good, works well.

I cannot abide chicken soup/broth, a failing of mine.

  7. Glad you survived "Snowageddon" but not glad the crud is still with you. Not sure about showing up for work today, but hey, as a retired person that is no longer on my list of things to worry about.

    1. It was more like snow-"meh"-geddon. This crud is annoying, I've had worse but still it would be nice to have it over.

  8. Around 0400 Mr Bladder demands attention. Back to bed and then start reviewing the poor decisions made over the years. Being retired I should be able to sleep in but the dog has needs. Also, being retired, naps are an option.

    1. I am really starting to look forward to retirement. I also learned something new today, if you adopt a segmented sleep pattern, you're not really napping. I have done that, working weird shift schedules.

  9. What WSF said. Gotta make at least one peepee break per sleep session. The pains of drinking a lot of liquid.

As to waking up and pondering existence and such, yeah, get that.

As to being a member of the walking dead, yeah, get that, too.

I will be happy when I finally stop firing shingles of goo out of my right nostril. The joys of a low-level sinus infection, yay me. Bleh.

  10. Heading to DC for work next week. I'm hoping the hysterical weather moves on. Maybe I'll pack some sunshine with me.
