Not Feeling Very Creative Today ...

Source
Sorry.

The new series of Vignettes has not proven to be very popular. Now I don't do this for the hits a post may (or may not) generate, but in order to motivate me to write, I expect the stuff to be read.

That doesn't seem to be the case at the moment. So ...

Thanksgiving approaches and The Missus Herself and Your Humble Scribe will be heading north to celebrate with my Mom and my kid brother. As Mom is now 94 and not very mobile, my brother made the decision to move in with her. A good call as he's retired already and she needs to have someone around.

On the downside, Mom no longer has a spare room for us to camp out in. So we're going to hotel it for the first time ever. On the upside, my nephew manages a hotel. So ...

Going up for a couple of days, it'll be nice, not sure how many holidays Mom has left. So it makes sense to go there.

While it would be nice to go hang with the grandsons in Maryland, they're at an age where the grandparents are still fun to hang out with, I feel a familial obligation to head north.

We'll be spending Christmas in Maryland though, that much I'm sure of.

With me being retired by then, it'll be nice not having to worry about rushing back home to get a couple of "relaxation" days before going back to work.

Because that ain't happening next year.

Uh uh.

I'll try and get creative later.

We'll see.

  1. I don't wish to complain about the free ice cream but I enjoyed what you have written so far.

    1. Thanks, James. I started writing another installment but came up short. Hits might be down because people are sick of the election drivel which seems to infect the internet lately. So they stay offline. Can't say I blame them. I may have just run out of gas for the moment.

    2. Don't stop. Your blog is on my daily reading list, and I've enjoyed you vignettes.

    3. Every time I consider quitting the blogging thing, I realize that I need to do this and still enjoy it. So I have no intention of quitting anytime soon.

      And thanks!

    5. WSF #1 - Thought this was some new internet speak.

Then I read your second comment.

    7. You see it the same way I do over here as I see from your 7:42. I do from time to time wander away and then I wander back. on the other hand I don't post deep thoughts or put the words in other people's mouth, usually. Be safe out there on the road. It's getting a lot crazier than it used to be. HMS

    8. I think COVID wiped the knowledge of safe motor vehicle operation from many minds. Perhaps the vaccines did that, but yes, it IS a lot crazier these days.

  2. I think a lot of us are somewhat burned out with all the election stuff, especially waiting for the House results, and so are somewhat lethargic about everything other than necessity.

I was enjoying the new direction your Muse had taken, especially with some of the similarities to other timelines you have given us.Taken all together you could publish an anthology, "War, No Matter How Much Things Change...." as a tribute to the BPI and what High Ranking Idjits inflict on them.

    1. I see that the AP has finally noted that the Republics got to 218 in the House. Others were calling that a few days ago.

      I like your idea!

    2. Thank you. I got to thinking that your fiction could fit together the way some of Turtledove's anthologies have a story or theme spanning centuries. "Departures," "Alternate Generals," and, even though just following one person over a decade or so, "Agent of Byzantium."

    1. Rob - Like I mentioned above I just ran out of steam mid-post and decided to take a breather. This writing stuff can be hard!

      And thanks, for being here.

  5. Sarge, if it is any consolation my views have been down over the last week as well. It could very well just be post-election exhaustion. But yes, it is hard to write when it is not being read and even harder when the idea does not seem to go anywhere (I am selfishly sad of course, because I enjoy that era, but anything you write is grand).

How lovely to be able to look forward to a post-Christmas holiday where the the post-recovery days are simply to recover for retirement!

  6. Seeing how the site isn't well monetized, it is purely your creative outlet, and if you're not creative, there's nothing to let out. However if you do get desperate for readership, a scantily clad thumbnail always works! 🤣

    1. "Isn't well monetized" - How about not at all.

As to your last, it's ideas you've given me ...

      Bad ones! 🤣

    2. I believe the Air Force, at least back when it was a fighting outfit, not a sociology petri dish with bad costumes, had a tradition of scantily clad artwork on public display on their aircraft. Along with more family friendly cartoon characters, some bad puns, and assorted threatening images. But, that was all banished lest someone might be offended that the rough men who stand ready to violence on their behalf are “Single men in barricks [sic] [who] don't grow into plaster saints."

And those guys actually sang songs not appropriate for the Chapel. Let alone the cadence or "Jody" calls.

There is a lot out there which has been quietly suppressed, but those who know, know.
      Sarge may reveal some... something.

    3. Sounds like I should do a nose art post, then and now, at some point in time. Which is a very good idea, surprised we haven't done one yet. Maybe we have, I need to check the archives.

    4. Not monetized at all? That must be why my paychecks keep bouncing.

    6. (Don McCollor) Probably the best nose art I have run across was a Canadian C46 at a GFAFB friends and neighbors' day. Her name "Ancient Warrier" was on the nose and a pterodactyl painted on the tail fin. Two youngish USAF types were looking at the leaking drops of oils forming puddles under her radial engines "Well, they MUST have flown it in here"....

    2. I am in agreement with Charlie. I stop by every day hoping you have written something. My only exposure to War of the Roses was Winston Churchill's History OF The English Speaking Peoples. Not much on the battles in it that I remember. I should reread.

    3. I try and post every day, if not me then one of my co-bloggers usually has something. I just hit a roadblock today, it's been cleared and another vignette is scheduled for Friday.

Love Churchill's writing, a hero of mine.

    4. So, Sarge loves him some Churchillian writings. And, Sarge reads more than any other person I know. Maybe when not excited about writing his own wicked good stuff, he can give us a quick book review of something he has read, and we can agree, or agreeably disagree with that. Many of the books I have read in recent years have been the result of them being mentioned here, or some other site where opinions I respect are shared and discussed. Or, call it Sarge's Book Club and pick a title to be discussed at a future date so others have time to read it and perhaps be prepared to offer differing views.

I confess to not reading anything BY WSC, although I have read the multi volume biography and an excellent history of his exploits in South Africa. He was not reluctant to getting shot at, or taking great personal risks.

I think my aversion to WSC's WW2 writings stems from declassification of ULTRA back when I was a youngster, but reading a lot, and I surmised that with facts from ULTRA not revealed, any history of WW2 would be lacking.

    5. Ah yes, ULTRA.

I do like the book review idea. I'll save that one for later.

  10. Sarge, what is the building at the top of your post? There seems to be an historical marker out front.

I join the others above in appreciation of your work.
