Had snow Sunday night, three to four inches was my estimate. (Don't look at the deck railings, the wind normally cuts that down by an inch or so.) It was warm, then it got cold, it was raining, then it was snowing.
Luckily enough, our house has a southern exposure so I didn't need to shovel the driveway, the good Lord cleaned that out for me with the rays of the sun. It stayed in the 20s all day but the sun plus the underlying blacktop in the driveway was enough to clean that out.
All I had to do was shovel the deck off (mostly to make a path for the oilman) and clean the cars off. The sun had done a lot of work on the cars but the north-facing portions still had a good four inches in place.
The snow came off fairly easily, only the bit closest to the skin of the vehicles was icy. But once the outer layer was brushed away, the sun helped melt that.
As I was traipsing about cleaning off the vehicles, I noticed that my right foot felt cold. Which seemed odd, until I looked down and saw that the outer layer (a plastic/rubber mix) had cracked and about two square inches of material was gone. The liner was still intact, but the snow directly on that made my foot notice.
That sucked. I've had those boots for 12 years or more, so one might think I got some good use out of them. Considering that I've only worn them maybe five or six times though, I didn't really. Oh well, time to get new ones. (One of the things I dislike about synthetic materials is that they seem to deteriorate over time. Maybe I'll get some old school boots this time.)
Watched professional playoff games Saturday and Sunday, two of the games were played in snowy weather (Philadelphia mostly, some in Buffalo) which I enjoy. After all, football should be played out in the elements. I've played in mud, snow, and rain. Sometimes a mixture of all three. Sigh, I get domed stadiums, people like to be comfortable. But it leads to weakness. At least I think so.
College playoff game Monday night, I have no dog in that hunt but as I've always had to work the next day, I've never watched one. That changes this year.
Do I miss working?
Seriously?
Not a bit.
See you soon.
Do you have Tractor Supply in RI? I got a real good pair of insulated Wellies there
ReplyDeleteProbably.
DeleteFlex Seal to the rescue if the tread is still good.
ReplyDelete-6 here this am. Pretty brisk to be watering and feeding the birds. Even with a heated waterer you need to help them in the AM.
Hadn't considered that. As the missing material is on top of the toe, that just might work.
DeleteLike you said Sarge....the work? Nope. The people? Yep. Bought myself a pair of Sorels just over thirty years ago for snow management season, still going strong, even the felt liners.... got my monies worth from them. Looked up this year's edition from the same company....$200.00 a pair!
ReplyDeleteBoots can be pricey.
DeleteSynthetics are not always as sturdy.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a full enough day; just not doing it for someone else.
A full day doing things I want to do, that's the key.
DeleteDid you ever wear Bates uniform shoes? Your boot collapse reminds me of the Bates blowout we would often get- on shoes that weren't worn that often so the cost per wear was extremely high. Sorry for my absence around here over the long weekend. I took the weekend off of the computer and have a ton to catch up on. You were the first stop when I got to the office so don't be too upset.
ReplyDeleteYeah, those Bates uniform shoes sucked.
DeleteLooking for a new hobby? You can fix things...like the boots. Ya, I know fixing stuff is not a thing for a lot of people but when you have the time.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Tuesday!
Don't really need any new hobbies, I don't mind fixing things, don't really want to do it full time.
DeleteWe are expecting freezing rain and possibly snow tonight, with temps dropping into the upper 20's. Good thing I have nowhere to go for the next day.
ReplyDeleteAs to the boots, that's the way it always goes with preps for storms. Right when you need it, it goes gerbroken.
I see Florida is in for some winter. Wow!
DeleteStill not as bad as 12-23-89. When it went from 70's and raining to 19 in 6 hours. Our airport was iced over, a real issue for me as my paycheck was coming from Chicago (plane landed in Jax, trucked to Gville, got it and made it to the bank right before it closed.) First time I ever got to play in snow, even made a snowman (about 6" tall.)
DeleteThat was especially cold because we had a waterbed and lost power. Which meant the heater in the bed went off. Brr...
I remember that story!
DeleteFor the first time in my life (I think) I had the TV on all day. I am rejoicing that, as I go, I leave the country in a state of recovering its common sense!
ReplyDeleteNo, I am not going just yet. However, it's beginning to be a longer walk to the mail room and when Miss Jeanie and I have our shower day, I get tired.
I'll leave that one for ya to think about.
I was going to watch the festivities, then realized that I was content to go about my normal routine, basking in the warm glow of a new era.
DeleteGot snow today, about an inch. First time we've had anything cover the ground. Not the grass above the ground, but the ground was white. Temp was about 25 with about 20K of wind, so feeding the horses was, well, uncomfortable. This afternoon, it's back above freezing so just snow in the shadows. Good enough for me to put a checkmark on my things I have dealt with this year column.
ReplyDeleteCheers all,
juvat
And it's only January!
DeleteI've seen snow in Texas. 1987. Surprised me it did.
But as I've grown older, I've learned that when it comes to Texas, nothing should be a surprise.
I to was lazy yesterday, maybe. But I call it relaxing during a wonderful day watching freedom being restored and evil rooted out.
ReplyDeleteYMMV, but that's my perspective of my day.
It's amusing to see some of the photos and comments from the folks on the Gulf of America as the get a light dusting of snow, which will probably be gone within 24 hours. Dang global warming and climate change is biting their butts!
JB
It was a good day.
