So I went on line last week to do it and, much to my chagrin ...
Okay, it wasn't that I didn't know the magic word (but I love that clip so ...) as much as it was a question of me needing a new photo for my license. The one on my current license being rather old. I still look like that, but older, and with a mustache.
So ...
Little Rhody now has you make an appointment for this sort of thing, absolutely no walk-ins. Which I'm okay with. It certainly has sped the process up and you don't have a room full of people waiting to be seen. Getting angrier as the clock ticks.
Now the last time I went was as a walk-in (shortly after the conclusion of the Pleistocene Epoch I believe it was) and as the office was in a brand new building, the employees were all rather in a good mood. (Take note you cheap-ass corporations with your shitty facilities, happy workers are more productive ...) And, as I asked one of the clerks, "So what happened to old Mrs. 'I Hate Everybody'?" - "Oh, she got fired two years ago, too many complaints about her attitude."
So yes, at least on my side of Little Rhody (the East Bay) we've got that going for us.
At any rate I was in and out in less than fifteen minutes, the folks working there were great and I was happy.
Until I remembered the construction on the bridge which connects Aquidneck Island with my hometown. Fifteen minute delay going to the island, and knowing the traffic flow, it would be at least twenty minutes going back. So I opted for a different bridge (Sakonnet for those who must know, vice the Mt. Hope Bridge, also known as the bridge of "Our Lady of Perpetual Repairs). Took more time but was way less deleterious to my blood pressure.
So yeah, I'm good with that.
Now back to the dadgum taxes ...

After reading this post I had to check my drivers license, expires birthday time next year......carry permit good until 2028....good. Thanks Sarge.
ReplyDeleteWhat? The Constitution expires in 2028? JK, I know many states have those kind of laws, every single one of them is unconstitutional.
DeleteSo as to not be caught remiss in renewing imp. stuff, I have a "sticky note" program that I keep current on my laptop* screen, for "important" things. A lilac-colored note for last/next dates and mileage for oil changes and tire rotations; a blue one for last/next locust tree pruning and house painting; a pink one for expiration dates: DL, Passport, and CCW; and a green one for the current-month's appointments and other "necessary and important" gotta-do-soon things to remember.
DeleteIt's on my "Start" list, so every morning when I boot up my computer, I give a glance at my screen "notes" to see if anything needs my immediate attention.
...works for me. :- )
...just googl something like "screen sticky notes" to find some free offerings.
* my 17" laptop is my "desktop" computer.
Well, the state emails me and sends me letters when they want stuff.
DeleteChecking my various documents also. Passports need renewal and I'll HURRY when they re-open the Government for 90 days again... SNARL
ReplyDeletePaying my tax gal is so worthwhile. Was a nice 30 minutes, shared some kids, pets and grandkid photos and I brought cookies for all.
Cookies? Nice.
DeleteGot my new License since our address changed. Made the appointment and both ofus were done in about 15 minutes. Who knew tha at least one department in the government was on the ball. If only Congress and the feds…
ReplyDeletejuvat
It's Congress, it's all on Congress, they don't enforce the rules, they let bureaucrats hold sway and you get apparently inefficient government agencies. It's the political appointees leading those organizations that are to blame if their outfit is inefficient. A fish rots from the head, so do governments.
DeleteHow long is the new licence good for?
ReplyDeleteOnce you hit 72 it expires when you turn 75. After that every two years. For the young'uns it's every five years.
DeleteSarge, the appointment system is a pain but worth it. Over Christmas break we tried a walk-in at the DMV to register a car; it was a three hour wait. We had to make an appointment to get the thing done.
ReplyDeleteLittle Rhody bans walk-ins altogether. It's easy enough making an appointment online, I wonder how the computer illiterate do it.
DeleteIn my state, you still need to go to DMV for licenses, but can make appointments which really speed things up.
ReplyDeleteFor a concealed carry permit renewal (term of 5years to make it acceptable as a substitute for a full Brady check when making a firearm purchase) you can renew on line. Takes about 15 minutes- watch a short suicide prevention video and firearm safety lesson, verify current address, etc, attach a selfie and provide credit card info. Note that is for renewal only. Initial issue still requires fingerprints and course completion certificate and photos. But, since we are a "Constitutional Carry" state, law abiding citizens "do not need no stinking permit" to lawfully carry.
Retired military and dependent IDs for myself and spouse are both indefinite- meaning we are likely to expire sooner than any IDs they will issue.

Not to put too fine a point on it but we are slaves as long as we allow politicians to violate the Constitution. Any sort of "carry permit" other than the 2nd Amendment itself is anathema to me. Whenever these things get mentioned I see red. Why did our ancestors shoot at the British soldiers marching to Concord? To stop the British government from confiscating our powder and shot. Would the colonists at the time have been okay if Parliament had made them get permits to have such things? No, I think not.
DeleteI'll get down off my soapbox now ...
Dear Sarge,
Deleteplease do not get down off yer ole soapbox
not now, not ever
yes n' I'll be happy to jern (yes! originally from NYC pre-WWII) yer up dere with my last, dying breath
Well, I do get riled over certain topics.
DeleteDMV jokes are an easy target, like the depiction of a clerk as a sloth in "Zootopia, but not always warranted. I've had good experiences at the DMV and never been there (even for a walk in) for longer than 90 minutes. If you follow what the website says about having the proper paperwork, get in the right line the first time, or better yet- have that appointment like you did, it all goes smoothly. The ones who don't follow directions are the ones who can make the visit unpleasant.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's the ones who can't follow directions who make the DMV folks surly at times. I mean, can you blame them?
DeleteThey're an interesting bunch at my local- lots of strange hair colors, piercings, tats, rainbows, clothes fasteners that defy the laws of physics, etc.
DeleteWell, it's California innit?
DeleteIn all its freakish glory

DeleteSo I was scrolling down my news briefs this morning and stumbled across a headline that said NYS is dropping a requirement for concealed carry permit.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was "Huh? What??" Doubled checked and yes, Nanny Kate is still our governor...thought this can't be right, she practically had a stroke when SCOTUS over-ruled her on a gun control law a few years ago, so I pull up the article which goes on and on about how great it is that NYS is dropping the requirement to submit your social media information in order to obtain a concealed carry permit because some judge somewhere said "Hey! That's an infringement of 1st Amendment rights". Sigh. Knew it was too good to be true.
Some days I am just so tired of politicians. Never mind the newsmedia.
Suz
An infringement of the 1st Amendment but not the 2nd? These modern day politicians want control, nothing less.
DeleteI'm surprised that RI can get away with that. Discrimination, racism, 87 types of phobic, don'tchya know.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started on states violating the Bill of Rights. It's the institutional past time of the Sacramento Supreme Soviet.
It's the same for most state legislatures.
