Regular Monday

Well, Campers, it's Monday again.  Not a lot of exciting things have happened down here.  Fortunately, the Super Storm petered out before it got anywhere close.  I think the lowest the temp got was in the low 40's.

Now, that is definitely NOT a complaint.  Hopefully, all y'all are doing ok.

Some progress has been made on the house construction.  Last update was the clearing of where the house will be located.

This picture was taken a couple of weeks ago when the old, dilapidated structure was demolished.

That was followed by clearing the debris and leveling the area where the house will be built.

However, notice the line where the leveled dirt is and the tree line is.  That side is really impassable and unusable.

So we got with our construction foreman and talked through the issue.

He hired a guy with a shredder with a tank tread-like base.    He went to work and pretty soon...

That area used to be unaccessable. Now the whole area where the house, horse barn and paddock will be are accessible but still shaded.

He also cleared out the areas where my workshop and Mrs J's "She Shed" will be placed.

Wasn't quite finished yet. But we have confidence.

So.  Progress is occurring.  We shall see what the next steps are.  Electricity and Water to the specific sites I would think.  They are on the property.

Peace out, y'all

  1. Thanks for the update juvat, progress in clearing what needs to be cleared out especially for fire risk. Heard parts of your neck of the woods are going to warm up a wee bit eh?

    1. Nylon,
Yeah a fire would have been extra bad. No real good way to get too it. I'm not sure if Texas has water bombers, but I think that would have been the only resort if a lightning strike has started one.
As to temps. Forecast for the week is lows in the 50's and highs in the 80's. Getting my walking numbers up is a lot easier lately. ;-)

  2. "She shed" indeed! I'd figured the "man cave" showed up because THE WHOLE HOUSE was set up by/for the "she", a small place set aside for the man seemed reasonable. I'm thinking that having the whole house was not enough, hence the "She shed".
It's good to see your place coming along!

    1. Thanks Rob. We haven't fully explored all the options. I'm kinda in agreement with your She Shed discussion. There is a weather component involved in the location decision. The house should be plenty big enough.

  3. Thanks for sharing the pictures, Juvat! I am excited to follow the progress.

It is amazing what a modern shredder can do.

    1. THBB,
Yeah, It was pretty cool seeing him cut through the jungle. His shredder could even take down full grown trees. We only needed a couple taken down, and Yes, we observed that process from a very far distance. Going out there here in a bit to see what the "final" product looks like.

  4. Looking forward to the Monday homestead creation updates! I take if you're back on the road and the neck is fully articulated again?

    1. Thanks! As to the latter, well...Kind of. I don't have to wear the neck brace any more. Very uncomfortable! My neck still has some swelling in it. Got a few Doctor's appointments over the next week or so. One of them is a neck guy, Going to ask him about that. It's still sore. I'm also still banned from driving until 1 May (aka 6 months past the accident) and assuming I get the DR's OK. We shall see what will be.

  5. Always great to see progress in anything. Old buildings coming down, new buildings going up, kids growing up (so fast!); doctors giving people good news for a change, old friends visiting. Old enemies getting whacked.

I guess you will be on septic, not city sewer out there, so one less hookup to worry about.

    1. JB,
Last first. Yes on the septic. We're a fair distance from "Civilization". We were on septic on our property outside of Fredericksburg, No problems with it. And the plumber that put it in, had a maintenance contract on it, so we had little to worry about and never had to call him. His regular visits kept it working without our need to call. Hopefully that will again be the case.
Old buildings coming down. Check mark in the completed box. New buildings going up. Well...not yet. Haven't had any old friends visiting, but a lot of Old Sarge's commenters have "visited".
And I appreciate that conversation. I've had an awful lot of good advice and good questions to ask the builder.
Thanks and keep up the good info, folks.

  6. I see that Kuwatis are using F-15s for target practice. Having paid attention to yesterday's post, I knew that most F-15s are single seaters but these were all two seater "Strike Eagles" as opposed to other types. What's that all about?

Kinda like the Navy guys with the original "Bugs" being fighters and then later ones becoming F/A-18s. Or, the F-14 Tomcat becoming the "Bombcat."

Perhaps a topic you could enlighten us about in a future post?

  7. Retired fire trucks are cheap to buy. I know several people who have them parked on their property. The rancher who owns the property next to our family cemetery in Northwest Colorado used his to spray fire retardant when a wild fire came near his property. An amazing man, he sprayed our cemetery at the same time. The truck is parked under a carport out of sight from his house. If you like the idea, you might discuss it with whatever fire department serves your area.
