Preview of Coming Attractions

The above is a place I plan on visiting while in the DC area for the Thanksgiving festivities. The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center which is (and yes, I quote) "the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum (NASM)'s annex at Washington Dulles International Airport in the Chantilly area of Fairfax County, Virginia." (W)

Last time I was down DC way we spent most of our time on the Mall as our hotel was just a short walk from a Metro stop and then a fairly short ride to the National Mall. There is much to see on the Mall, including the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. A place where I could (and did) spend hours.

As we were in town for what was, in effect, a long weekend, we did not get out Chantilly way. So I am rather pumped about going there.

Expect pictures.

Lots of pictures.

  1. Udvar-Hazy is a great place. I think I got at least three blog posts out of my visit last year and a couple o' tee shirts... real tee shirts. The gift shop doesn't sell Enola Gay tees, however, and the nice old lady behind the counter nearly bit my head off when I asked for one. So there IS a downside. ;-)

    1. I seem to recall those posts.

Magic words, "gift shop." Mayhaps I'll stop by and tell the nice lady behind the counter that a friend of mine said I could get an Enola Gay t-shirt there.

      Should I then run?

    2. Well, the lady in question is a short, plumpish, white-haired lady in the 60'ish age bracket. I'd make sure there was suitable distance between the two of you if you DO ask the question. I was quite surprised at her reaction when I asked my question.

  2. I think they might now sell Enola Gay. When you hit their McD's and Gift shop and you see the pics/manuals of flight maintenance for B29's, they got it. I have blogged about it too. I really like the place. At the entrance, when you stand there on the 'bridge' and see a space shuttle...............................way over there............................tucked in a corner. Go only with flightphiles. Don't go there with anyone who failed to learn flight reading about the Lufbery because they will whine about why they have to be there for so long. Ditto Evergreen if you should ever get there.

    1. Copy all Cap'n.

Evergreen has been mentioned in these spaces before. I may need to find an excuse to go to Oregon. Other than the museum, I don't want to seem eccentric.

  3. Yep, Udvar Hazy IS a big time time sink... Easy to spend 6 hours there...

    1. Time is relative. I'm sure it will go too fast. So many flying machines to lust after.

  4. When I first saw the picture yesterday ...before I read your copy ...the structure reminded me of something I couldn't quite place.
    I finally remembered.
There is a resemblance to a couple of hangars at Moffett Field ...not Hangar One, but the other two to the east of the runway.
    And it's only a resemblance.

    1. I checked Google satellite view and I can see the resemblance.

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
Can't be nice, go somewhere else...
