The Game

Indeed, it is that time of year, the only college football game I care about.

I'm not sure when I started following this game as I do now. Probably when The Naviguesser went off to college where he donned the uniform of an NROTC Midshipman.

Now with two daughters and a son-in-law still on active duty, and The Sea Lawyer still in the Reserves, all proudly representing the U. S. Navy, my love of this particular event has grown.

But Sarge, you might ask, did any of them go the the Trade School on the Severn?

Why yes, yes one did. The Sea Lawyer is a proud alumnus of Annapolis.

So, with all due respect to my Army brethren and colleagues (a good buddy of mine from high school went to West Point, as did one of The Nuke's high school classmates) I just have to say...

What?

You heard me...

And I never argue with Dragons!

Update:
Final Score
Navy - 17
Army - 10
Hard fought, but Navy wins. That's 13 straight versus Army.
A great game!

    1. Last year wasn't even close as I recall.

Let it be a good game.

Let it be a close game.

      Let Navy win.

    3. It was pretty exciting. Though I enjoyed Navy winning, I did feel bad for Army.

Next year guys, maybe next year.

  2. Hear hear!

My impossibly young cousin Brian is a third class middie, the first of the tribe to attend the modern iteration of the Philly Naval Asylum. His mom and dad have been utterly transformed by the experience. So it's a local force for good, too. As for the game, we've all chuckled at the image below. Which was taken in 1996. When Army chalked up a fifth-consecutive win. "Not the victory but the action; Not the goal but the game; In the deed the glory."

  3. My Dad, having served on the USS Mindoro, always rooted for Navy. And I, as his son, do the same. Definitely one of the more enjoyable sporting events, of any kind, during the entire year, without fail.

    1. I did not know that, Suldog. USS Mindoro (CVE-120) was an escort carrier, so your Dad was in the same business as two of my kids! (Naval Aviation)

      Heck, we're practically related!

  4. Being prior service Navy and current Army Guard I technically win either way, but I still root for Navy.

    1. So it's a win-win for Pogue.

That means you can just sit back and enjoy the game. Without getting too excited either way.

A very balanced approach my friend.

    1. And FWIW, LSU coach Paul Deitzel (a WW II USAAF pilot) of our '58 National Championship squad left LSU in 61 (a year before I got there) for the head coaching job at WP (62-65) where he had been a grad assist previously.

    2. Oh, and to further extend the Army connection, LSU's first President was Gen W. T. Sherman, and its President while I attended there was one of Pattons generals, Troy H. Middleton (whose signature appears on my diploma)

    3. Commanded VIII Corps in the Ardennes, General Middleton's decision to hold Bastogne was the decisive move in that battle.

You need make no apologies here Virgil.

  7. This is one of the few college games I watch but it's always hard to decide who to root for.

My great grandfather and two of my uncles were Navy and my grandfather, my dad and my oldest son were Army. So I just enjoy the game.

    1. Everybody prior to my generation was Army. Though technically speaking, Uncle Louis was Army Air Force.

My generation (two cousins and yours truly) were Air Force. Kids, all Navy.

For a number of reasons, the Naval Academy has my loyalty.

  8. Of course I root for Navy, but I happen to be related to an Army Heisman winner- Glenn Davis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Davis_%28American_football%29. He's my dad's cousin.

    2. I thought that name was familiar.

Mr Outside. Doc Blanchard was Mr Inside. A famous running back duo back in the day. I had no idea you were related.

      Pretty cool.

    3. I should also mention, he was drafted by the Lions in 1946 but went into the Army after graduation.

After his stint in the Army he played for the Rams but knee injuries essentially ended his pro career.

(That's for those who don't chase the link.)
