They're Here...

La invasión de los bárbaros o La entrada de los Hunos en Roma - Ulpiano Checa, 1887 (Source)
I have heard it said, or perhaps I read it somewhere, that civilization is a fragile thing. A thin veneer covering the inner barbarian which dwells within us all. While I do believe that this may apply to some, I think that in general, it's a load of crap. Civilization is a bit more pervasive than that.

I suppose it depends greatly on context. Put one hundred people behind the wheels of  motor vehicles, set them loose on the highway, and I think that the number who become raving lunatics is still pretty small. But there will be at least one guy who becomes that raving lunatic, that barbarian if you will.

But in any organization or group of people there is always "that guy." The one who doesn't want to play by the same rules as everybody else, the one who deems himself "special." You know the type, the rules are for everybody except him.

I'm using the masculine pronoun here, as 99% of the time, "that guy" is exactly that, a guy, a male of the species. Women, who can get very nasty when defending their young, aren't normally the type to flip you off right after they've cut you off on the highway. Hey, it happens, but normally it's a guy, not a gal. Women are far more civilized than men, at least in my experience.

But that's behind the wheel of a vehicle. In normal circumstances I can't say I see that sort of barbaric behavior in other contexts. I seldom see folks barge to the head of the line in a coffee shop because "I'm in a hurry, don't you know who I am?" I'm sure it happens, I just don't see it all that often.

Perhaps I need to get out more. Or not.

Now civilization, society if you will, is not going to break down if a small percentage of the population acts like a$$holes. Things begin to break down when most of the people no longer see a need to obey the rules, and I don't mean the arbitrary rules imposed on us from above.

I mean the unwritten rules like get a job, pay your taxes, don't cheat on...

Well, don't cheat on anything really.

Now if we start thinking that we can get something for nothing, or making someone else pay for most of it, then things start to break down. Once people see that there's no point to performing an honest day's work for a fair wage, that there's no point to not lying about contributions to charity on your taxes, that there's no point to skipping a couple of martinis for lunch...

That's when things start to go to Hell in a hand basket. Everybody starts blowing things off. Why bother to play by the rules? Everyone is doing it, morals are not absolute, they're relative. Today's taboo is tomorrow's "choice."

Maybe it's the political antics being played out in the media, maybe it's the mid-winter blues, at any rate, sometimes life can be pretty damned annoying.

Today is one of those days.

Hey, world! Hilary is a criminal, Bernie is a Communist, and The Donald is a demagogue. If you waste a vote on them, you probably shouldn't be voting to begin with.

And for what it's worth, IMHO, Pluto is still a planet and "Hwaet" means what it has always meant.

Just want to put that out there.

    Exactly.

  2. Most of the men acting like assholes have a woman poking them from behind with a stick. You left out Cruz is a dick which if were going to vote we do have to pick one. I think Trump would be the most fun and do the least damage.

In sixth grade I did a science report on Pluto and it will always be a planet to me...or Mickey's dog.

    1. Concur with your last.

Pluto was Mickey's dog? (Yes, I know, I'm being facetious or fractious, not sure which at the moment. It's one of THOSE days...)

  3. I blame the media for putting the gas bags on pedestals way too early in the process.
It seems to have come down to an anyone but scenario.

And Pluto was a god in another culture before being demoted to planet, dwarf planet, then dog.

    1. Too early for gas bags on pedestals AYE!

Wouldn't it be interesting if Mickey's dog was named Hades?

  4. In 14 years of oppressing people, I found the truly demonic ones to always be female. Males were the bigger jerks, but evil is far better able to bloom and grow in the female mind.

    1. I'm guessing you mean "people with badges"? On the big stage I can't recall any truly demonic female leaders, unless you want to mention Jiang Qing, Mao's wife. She was a real piece of work.

    2. Nelson Mandela's wife was another IMO. Maybe Catherine the Great of Russia--though she, uh, got along with John Paul Jones, so perhaps wasn't truly demonic.

    3. You're right Cap'n, Winnie is a real piece of work as well.

The Czarina in question was an interesting person, not necessarily evil given the times she lived in.

    4. I thought this an interesting story.

    5. Now that is an interesting story.

Odd isn't it, how history (and the news) are reported?

    6. Another woman in power story. I have a sneaking suspicion that the woman mentioned in your post has the same craving for power, but Vince Foster isn't around to confirm.

    7. I'm starting to lend a bit more credence to Scott's supposition. I've said it before, no doubt I'll say it again, badgers are smarter than the average mustelidae.

  5. Multi-culti don't you know. There's no difference between civilizations and who are we to cavil at men who buy and sell girls in the market if it's OK in their civilization? I say be sporting and tolerate all civilizations. It's the fair thing to do. There, a socially approved message at long last!

  6. I promise to pledge my vote to the first candidate who declares that Pluto is still a planet.

  7. Hwaet! This is how murika kilt itsself!

    I messed that up, didn't I?

Be interesting to see what happens. I love what my junior senator had to say yesterday, "What America needs is a Constitutional recovery, not a Republican Barack Obama."

Just be polite... that's all I ask. (For Buck)
