As to the rest of the world, Spike Jones comes to mind. He's one of the best parody musicians ever. Popular before and during WWII, he basically made fun of everyone and everything.

Spike Jones' City Slickers had to be exceptional musicians, in order to play consistently that badly. I have always found him to be very enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteLike Werner Klempener, who was a concert-level violinist. Otherwise known as Colonel Klink. Sometimes it takes talent to sound so bad.

DeleteIIRC (highly doubtful) , there was an episode of "Hogan's Hero's" where Mr. Klemperer (2 Rs no N) played the violin. I remember thinking that it had to have been dubbed in as no actor could be that good. I stand corrected.

The thing about 'concert' level soloists is that there's only room on top for a limited handful. Klemperer was really good, just that there were 4-5 that were better, so he could spend time in the orchestra or do something else.

Which is why it was very surprising that "Maverick" was made and turned out so successful, and why Hollyweird is freaking out about how good "John Wick 4" is.

DeleteWhen I saw TOP GUN in the theater (last movie I saw in one), I think I saw a trailer for a Wierd Al Yankovic bio movie. Looked pretty funny from what I remember, but I don't remember if it actually came out or was a "next summer" type of trailer. Not that I'd go see it in the theater, but your post reminded me of it.

DeleteActually, I think the movie he's talking about is "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story". Just recently released and is a parody about Al's life starring Harry Potter as Al. Supposed to be pretty funny (and Al plays a record producer in it, so he was on board.) Oh, UHF is too funny for mortals such as we.

ReplyDeleteIt's a very interesting webcomic. Starts out literally drawn on a whiteboard and then photocopied, but over the years has been refined quite a bit. There's some stuff that's not really understandable unless one is in the know about paintball, though one can pick up the info pretty quick by inference. Other references to other webcomics may or may not make any sense.
DeleteI used to play paintball. I've seen characters from Schlock Mercenary and Sluggy Freelance on there.
DeleteI remember all of these but you missed what also was playing in my house - Yogi Yorgesson - Someone Spiked The Punch At Lena's Wedding. And of course he did Christmas songs. My mother married into a Swedish family. This was quite the departure from hearing classical to Yogi.
