Life lesson's taught, some learned, others?

Well, Campers, you'll be happy to know that as of this morning, there are only 83 shopping days until Christmas.  Better get out there and resuscitate the economy.

Lord knows nothing our gummint is doing has a f'in chance in hell of working.  However, I am 100% certain that what ever actions it takes will 1) make the politicians wealthier and 2) raise prices for all the things the rest of us need.

A pox on them all.

End Rant!

So, juvat, how are things in Texas? Well...according to this site 34% of new Texans come from California.  (As an aside, I think the rest come from the Rio Grande. Just sayin').  By the way, that same site says almost a million folks moved her between 2010 and 2019.

From my personal statistical point of view, I had never seen a Tesla prior to last year. So, no Californians. Now I'll see half a dozen on the 10 minute drive to town.

It's hard to haul hay in a Tesla. Also, 300 miles doesn't get you close to anywhere around here, and certainly not there and back.

But, on a happier note, I found a YouTube series entitled "Californians move to Texas". I thought it completely truthful and very funny.  YMMV.

So for your visual pleasure.

And...Just because I'm feeling generous.

Ok, enough of the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth (even if it's funny).

Major  milestone achieved in the Saw Incident. Today was the first day I've gone without any bandage on my thumb.  For those who didn't know, a couple of months ago, I made a stupid mistake in using my table saw to cut some wood.  A couple of milliseconds later or millimeter's closer and I probably wouldn't have a thumb.

Tingles a bit still and I don't have a lot of strength in it, but it's getting better.

Fortunately, as you can see, that isn't the case.  So, Thank you Lord!

I did make a few modifications to my miter sled though, just to remind me!

The tape and lines denote the "No Hands" area with a fairly generous additional distance from the blade.

On the other front for last month's trying episode, Kathy is doing ok, (probably better than I would be).  Sue and I have been over there a couple of times under the camouflage of helping her get financial data off Gary's computer and on to hers.  She uses QuickBooks, he used Quicken.

Why two different software programs?  Haven't a clue.  However, the real complication in the whole shebang is Gary was using Quicken 2013!

Yeah, Beans, 10 year old software.

Unfortunately, they don't maintain/update that version any more.  And Quickbook's converter software only goes back to 2018.

So...another lesson to keep in the back of your mind, make sure your computer data (any that you care about or that someone might need) is kept up to speed.  I was able to get a list of all their financial transactions for the company over to Quickbooks.  Had to export it from Quicken into Excel, then convert it into a CSV file then import it into Quickbooks.  Suffice it to say, I was a tad concerned.

Other than that, Kathy has some very interested buyers for the winery.  That will take a lot of stress of her, so we're praying it goes through.

On a more pleasant note, we've got our first dog trainer training session as you're reading this.  Hopefully there will be some progress. We'll see!

After that is over, we're headed to College Station for a few days to do some renovation work on MBD's and The Rev's home and, somewhat more importantly, retrieve most of my power tools that have migrated over there. As mentioned at the beginning of this post, Christmas (and Birthdays) are approaching and I've got presents to make.

Peace out y'all

    1. Nylon,
Yeah I had a pretty good chuckle at that point. That group of actors has a pretty good sense of humor as well as irony. Stumbled on them searching "Californian migration to Texas".
      Thanks

  2. Finger injury. I was lightly rubbing the numb spot on my finger from the router injury while looking at the photos. Yes, it could have been a lot worse and I'm still very careful about power tools.
A few days ago I dodged a potential injury and I wondered whether doing a fairly large number of dangerous things safely during my work and hobbies created an attitude on my part that because I had done a lot of dangerous things safely, then all dangerous things can be done safely.
And none of what I did was as potentially dangerous as donning a high performance jet and heading for the wild blue yonder.
I know that I've become somewhat more risk adverse, but neither am I going to wing myself in bubble wrap and hide at home.

Power tool migration during family jobs. Yep, and still somehow during the work you will find you failed to bring something that you need.
Tools also migrate during home jobs. I bring up what I think I need, then there are several trips downstairs to get more tools and by the end of the job it takes quite a while to put things away.

Good advice about getting squared away before the end. During the long process of elderly family issues, we found out we weren't as squared away as we thought we were, and it was a wake up call.

    1. JiP,
Yeah it does get easier to become complacent the more you practice. Hence the blue tape and "NO Hands" on the miter sled. So far that has been effective. We'll see.
The good news about the tool migration is they're pretty close to the major portion of their house renovation being complete. I'll break it to them gently that it's NEVER really complete. Then slide out the back door with my power tools.
      I'm thoughtful that way.

  3. 83 shopping days! I went into Lowes yesterday, it's Christmas on display there! Back in September they had Halloween stuff.

    1. Rob,
Yeah, I noticed that also. With prices so high now (Thank You, Joe!), merchants got to try harder to sell them.
      I guess.

  4. No need to fret, Juvat. The government is only funded for 45 days (44 now, I guess), so we get to do this whole thing again right before Thanksgiving.

Heartening to hear that the winery has buyers. And a great point about file fomats - We ended up going to a straight spreadsheet for budgeting for transference between platforms (also, it does save us some money from paying Intuit every month).

EVs are a funny creature. They "work" in very specific environments (although electricity is not free, of course; that never seems to be factored in). They do not work in lots of other environments.

    1. THBB,
No buyers yet, interested in buying yes. But fingers are crossed.
That transfer of data was a stop gap to get her through the end of the fiscal year. With the new FY started, she's doing all hers (and Garyi's) bookkeeping in QuickBooks , so hopefully....

Yeah, still a little tender and different feeling with the bandage gone. But, I am relearning how to use it. So...I got that going for me.
      Thanks

  6. Maybe the table saw should migrate over to College Station, and you can upgrade to this one: https://youtu.be/SYLAi4jwXcs?si=a91PUQIEw-WmBYQG&t=137

I wasn't a very good boy this year. Santa doesn't have me on that list. Maybe when I win the lottery.

Hey! It COULD happen (if I buy a ticket).
      Cheers,

  7. A big Thumbs Up!

Those CA moves to TX skits are a hoot. The gun range one and the last one are a bi over done, but still funny.

    2. Regarding the gun range scene, I've seen that exact thing. A first timer who turns out to be a crack shot, right next to someone who is less accurate than the average hoodrat.

She just left. Gave us some good tips/tricks to try on our two GPs. She also gave us a shopping list for collars and leashes that should be effective in keeping those two dogs. I'm pretty sure MG could ride them easily.
Thanks for the recommendation. She also thanked you.

  9. You still get one of those material clampdown thingies like I pointed out last time. Helps hold real well and allows quick changing of the material.

As to FJB's government, they've purposely suppressed/lowered the actual inflation figure to reduce any fed pension payments that increase at the reported inflation rate. Like military pensions and Social Security. Rat bastards all

I'd say more, but OAFS would come down on me with combat boots for getting more political than I already have.

And, yeah, the Bee. So funny it's either not funny because it's true or so funny because it's true. Or both. Two types of Cali immigrants - those that aren't Califrutopians and those that are. Make and model of vehicle is a good selector.

First Tesla I saw here in Gainesville, Fl, had a "Bernie for President" bumper sticker. Buy a $100K car, slap a socialist dear leader sticker on it. Brilliant.
