Ah, The Weekend ...

Stormy Sea at Night

Alrighty then, I managed to dredge up the energy to post something other than a re-run. So then, let us begin.

I've been reading a very good book on the Battle of Antietam off and on for a few months now. Why off and on? Well, it's pretty damned sobering.

(Source)
Men advancing through cornfields then coming into the open to be torn apart by rifle and cannon fire. Something often not very well depicted by Hollywood, who seem to think that all explosions involve lots of flame and that casualties simply fling their hands up then fall to the ground, seemingly intact.

Shōgun, a series I've mentioned before, is an exception to filmmakers "getting it wrong." At least in the following scene they get it awfully correct. (Note that the scene is very graphic and you'll need to click over to YouTube to watch it ...)

Men and horses are torn apart by cannon fire, sheets of blood are thrown up, the very ground is soaked and made muddy by the blood of the victims. This is what war looks like on the ground, this is the thing which feckless politicians would have us involved in.

But you know what? I'm letting current affairs and happenings in the world outside affect my mood far too much lately. I need to ...

The Missus Herself and Your Humble Scribe have their health, our children and grandchildren are doing well, and (other than that Gorram daylight saving time making everyone tired and cranky) work goes well. I enjoy what I do and I love the people I work with. The camaraderie takes me back to my days wearing a uniform. We get along well and can rip each other with no hard feelings, in fact we often do that just for the fun of it.

Although spring arrived in Little Rhody on the 19th, after a week of nice, warmer, milder weather, the 20th saw temperatures drop back down into the 30s during the day and 20s at night. Though it's sunny, it's kinda chilly, damned wind has picked up as of late as well.

Oh well, weather in New England, you can bitch about it all day long, but it's gonna do what it wants to. But other than that, things are going well. I pay far too much attention to the chattering classes, I need to filter that nonsense out.

I'll keep my ear to the ground, but I ain't gonna fret. After all, though it may not be apparent, God is still in charge.

And that's not going to change.

Ever.

Be well.

  1. Nineteen above right now, weather guessers calling for six to twelve inches starting tomorrow morning into Monday, had three inches Thursday night........ so much for "spring". With the way drones are being used in Ukraine, new meaning is given to the moniker PBI.

    1. Spring in your neck of the woods isn't the same as mine!

  2. Nylon,
PBI? Enlighten me, please. Google thinks it's Palm Beach International or Polar Bear Initiative. Neither seems to work. (But it's early and the coffee hasn't kicked in yet)

    1. And yes, it's raining. But you normally don't have to shovel rain.

  6. Sarge, thanks for sharing the Shogun link. The Englishman's awkwardness in swords is quite realistic. For our style, we wear our swords more across our front.

To your point, even the realism of war when portrayed does not hold in the minds of those that would condemn us to it.

Weather here is foggy with a chance of showers. First weekend alone here; going out to do some adventuring.

    1. War cannot truly be portrayed, it must be experienced to fully understand its horrors. The smells, the screams of the injured and dying, the feeling of imminent death in the air, the small-minded people who would rule us will never understand.

  7. Forecast is for a major snow storm in the mountains. Last night walking he dog a frog was croaking in the retaining pond. One benefit of retirement is traveling only when I want to travel.

  8. Lower 50s for the high, upper 30s, low 40s for the low. Got 3/4" of rain yesterday. Last time I checked (about 0500) we are forecast for almost another half inch today .

Another good look at the reality of war is Union of Salvation about the December Revolution.

    1. I've seen those clips, good illustration of the effects of canister. A really good film, the only one I've found with subtitles was horribly done by some kid experimenting with some new editing software he bought, and wasn't very good with.

If anyone has a good source for this film, let me know.

  9. We're supposed to get 8" of snow starting at 6pm through monday evening; this will beat the season's total. Some forcasts are calling for 12"-24" in some scattered places (hopefully not ours.)

    1. Not to brag, but right now, it's 75 outside. Nice little breeze with partly cloudy skies. Got rain last night and I'm going to have to mow the yard(s) quite soon for the second time. Quite nice right now, but I'm trying not to think about August.

    2. htom - In the northern tier states winter just hangs on, doesn't it?

    3. juvat - You're a bad, bad man. (In the 50s here, raining like crazy and the wind is running 15 to 25 mph. Fun times.)

    4. The good part is this snow is coming in late March. It could have come in January. Now there is hope it will melt in a month or so.

    5. This will probably melt by Friday. We've had a total of less than 8" since before Halloween. The fields ar parched, lawns and parks ar bare of snow. we're short four or five or six FEET of snow for the winter.

    6. Don - Yeah, January snow tends to linger in those higher latitudes.

    7. htom - That's pretty bad, that's gonna hurt come summer!

  10. 2nd shovel of the area my snowplow guy cannot do. Totals measured is a bit over 16 inches but then again, it's still snowing.

The weather folks are calling for 4-8 inches more, so a 3rd, probably 4the shoveling ahead.

    Winter laughs at the calendar.
