What a week!

Well, campers, the good news is I was released from the hospital Saturday and am headed home as this post is being written. (No Beans, I’m not driving, Mrs J is kindly taking care of that responsibility.)  We have made it safely home.  Safely mostly because of Mrs J's driving abilitiy rather than the driving performances of the people who have recently moved to Texas after having sold their 1500 sqft BUNgalow for a couple of million and now feel entitled to dictate to us mere mortals  who have lived here for the majority of our lives. Those numbers on the freeway signs are not indicative of the minimum speed allowed by law.  Back the hell off my bumper, just in case one of your colleagues in the "how close can I get to his bumper" competition screws it up and is splattered on the highway.  Thereby tempting you to test your brakes and potentially join him.

A Pox be upon thee.

Anyhow, back to the update.  Surgery went fine, however recovery is a bit slow.  They've got me in a neck brace which was pictured last Mondays post.  I didn't worry about it too much as I wasn't given the full story.  Evidently, I've got to wear that brace as close to 24/7 every week for the next 3 months.I did get a short break when I switch from normal to “My Lord! Would you please take a shower?”.  Showering requires a different brace. It can get wet. Nicest shower I’ve had in a while.

Yay!

But Mrs J and I are back in the Burg.  We’ve got lot of things still left to do vis a vis the move. But progress is progressing. Cracking my sternum and fracturing my neck hasn’t helped. But we have hired professional mover help now and adjusted our travel schedule to give us a bit more moving time.

Unfortunately, I've been told (by officials) that Blacking out while driving imparts a 6 month prohibition to drive. That should be fun. "Why do we need to drive to Lowes? Can't that wait til next week?"

  3. Tailgaters seems to be a universal problem. I put a dump body in my Tacoma. Toggling the dump switch seems to discourage such behaviour. Old Guns

I can see how that would work. Since my pickup was totalled, I might be able to acquire one.

Tried the shower one yesterday. It was actually pretty comfortable. Just plastic, water ran over it with just enough inside to wash the sweat and gunk out. Had to sacrifice my beard for the othe one, just got really uncomfortable with the beard being rather tightly held against my neck. Kinda (ok Really) itchy.
Finally, it's Texas, wearing a scarf identifies you as at Californian. Booo!

  5. When I was young and fit I decided that if someone was tailgating me I'd just slow down to whatever speed was consistent with safety given his distance. This worked reasonably well in that I enjoyed it and the morons didn't.

I could see how that might work, might have to try that (in about 6 months when I'm allowed to drive again)

Interesting idea. I think when the kids were here, we had that equipment. Might give it. try. Especially if I could secure it, but in some way that it looks like it could fall off at any slight bump.

  10. Glad to hear (relatively) good news for a change. One step at a time. Just keep making forward progress.
I never did catch what the surgery was for- ticker, sternum or neck, but as long as it went well that's what matters.
Prayers up for continued healing, trouble free relocation and spacious new mansion of your dreams completed on schedule and under budget.

Some extra reasons to celebrate Thanksgiving this year... and next.

As am I. Laying there in a medicinally induced stupor, doesn't allow for much activity other than watching soap operas. Fortunately, Mrs J brrought in a couple of books from the hospital library. That helped.

    1. Yeah, Mrs J is a pretty good driver. However even she let out a cuss word or two on the highway between College Station and Austin. I think I'll have to relearn how driving down to get the mail. Deer are the biggest threat on that journey but with the limit being 30mph, the only damage they usually cause is an increased heart beat. Which is what's keeping me from being able to drive and get the mail.

  13. Glad to hear you are home. Have been thinking about you all week, sending prayers up daily as I am very good at nagging, especially when I am REALLY concerned about some one or some thing. Just ask family, they can verify. ;)
Saw the neck brace last week, first thought was "wasn't he told not to ride the horses?" Guess the doc forgot to mention car accidents...
And yes, no driving for 6 months, which can change (as in be extended) if ya have another "black out" session---so, um, don't do THAT! Just saying.
Seriously, glad to hear you are home!!!

    1. Besides, you have a cracked sternum and a fractured neck---exactly what are you doing that you need to go to Lowes for?? As I am pretty sure you have activity as well as weight restrictions--like nothing over 5 pounds or no reaching your arms over shoulder high...or are the medical folks in TX much nicer than medical folks up in the Great White North?!?! So, yeah, I'm thinking not going to Lowes until maybe the week after next is more than likely. You, sir, have been promoted to Supervisor. You can direct, but ya can't touch. And yes, it sucks, but, it will get better!! Provided ya don't try to do anything ya shouldn't.
Taking off the nursing cap, climbing off the rant box...

    2. Suz,
Some good advice in that first one. I'm in the no driving portion of this event. Hopefully, this will pass fast. I don't believe there's any place in Texas that's in walking distance. I just realized that with the accident, the moving, the temporary house and construction on the new house, woodworking will be non-existent. I hope the new house construction goes quickly.

  14. Glad you survived the hospital. Have your wife check all your surgical sites for infection and if any sign shows up, get thee hence to the ER stat.

Otherwise, glad you're home and recovering. Take it easy, enjoy commanding the packing staff, or not, as it may be.

Please take care of yourself. As we age, time goes by faster. That's something. No wait! Oh well, never mind.
