Ave Atque Vale

Source
I knew his real name, Dave Mustar, here on the blog, we knew him as Dakota Viking.  He's the #1 Nozzleman in the photo above. He's also here in the USS Carl Vinson's cruise book from 1989-1990.

I hadn't heard from him in a while, I had a quick note from him a while back telling me that he'd been busy but had some more stories to share.

Gonna have to wait a while for that. David died quietly, in his sleep, on the 23rd of February, 2026. A friend of his, JK, left the message of his passing in yesterday's comments.

I'm going to go back and read some of those posts he shared with us, you can too if you click on the Dakota Viking label over on the right.

I think I'm going to take some time away from the blog for a bit. Cuppla days at least, maybe longer. This is going to take some time to process. I think I've got one more post he sent me that I haven't published yet. I need to find that. But for now ...

I am saddened by his passing.

Ave Atque Vale
Through many countries and over many seas
I have come, Brother, to these melancholy rites,
to show this final honour to the dead,
and speak (to what purpose?) to your silent ashes,
since now fate takes you, even you, from me.
Oh, Brother, ripped away from me so cruelly,
now at least take these last offerings, blessed
by the tradition of our parents, gifts to the dead.
Accept, by custom, what a brother’s tears drown,
and, for eternity, Brother, ‘Hail and Farewell’.

Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale ...

Rest in peace, my brother in arms. Rest in peace.

And this is the 16th anniversary of my Dad's passing. Not feeling anything right now, just an aching void ...

  1. Thank you. I had been wondering what happened to him.

O God of spirits and of all flesh, Who hast trampled down death and overthrown the Devil, and given life to Thy world, do Thou, the same Lord, give rest to the soul of Thy departed servant in a place of brightness, a place of refreshment, a place of repose, where all sickness, sighing, and sorrow have fled away. Pardon every transgression which he has committed, whether by word or deed or thought. For Thou art a good God and lovest mankind; because there is no man who lives yet does not sin, for Thou only art without sin, Thy righteousness is to all eternity, and Thy word is truth.
For Thou are the Resurrection, the Life, and the Repose of Thy servants who have fallen asleep, O Christ our God, and unto Thee we ascribe glory, together with Thy Father, who is from everlasting, and Thine all-holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever unto ages of ages. Amen
May He Who arose from the dead, Christ our true God, through the prayers of His all-pure Mother; of the holy, glorious and all laudable Apostles; of our holy and God-bearing Fathers; and of all the saints; establish the soul of His servant who has been taken from us, in the mansion of the righteous; give him rest in Abraham’s bosom, and number him among the just; and have mercy on us, forasmuch as He is good and loves mankind.

Grant rest eternal in blessed repose, O Lord, to Thy servant who has fallen asleep, and make his memory to be eternal!

  3. I enjoyed his posts here. Sad to hear that he's taken that next step in life's journey, he is missed ... but it's a step we'll all follow sometime.

I'm 73 now, if I woke up dead tomorrow it would not be statically unusual. No one in my family knows/cares about the people I know & communicate with on the internet, like the folks on this blog. I would just not be there anymore like so many other I've known thru this medium.
    RIP Mr. Mustar.

  4. Amen, a real loss to his friends here, and his family and friends elsewhere.
'Tis a sad season, with the anniversary of the loss of our beloved Neptunus Lex looming in less than a fortnight, and my own Dad only a day off but a year later.

We be but mere mortals, so make the best of our time here.
Thanks again to Sarge for giving us "birds of a feather" a place to gather and talk amongst ourselves and share our stories.

  5. Crusty Old TV Tech here. Fair winds and following seas, Sailor. Good time to look up "Eternal Father, Strong to Save". Gets a little dusty around here when that one comes on the tune box. Farewell!

  6. He had such a strong voice, Sarge. He will be missed. Hail and well met indeed.

Let us not just mourn the passing of such men. Let us rejoice that they existed at all.

  8. Rather a young-ish man I'd expect being an MM2 in 90, probably around my age give or take. Peacefully settles my heart, but the age doesn't do much for it. Rest in Peace DV. - Tuna

  9. "Light many lamps and gather round his bed.
Lend him your eyes, warm blood, and will to live.
Speak to him; rouse him; you may save him yet.
He's young; he hated war; how should he die
When cruel old campaigners win safe through?

"But death replied: 'I choose him.' So he went,
    And there was silence in the summer night;
Silence and safety; and the veils of sleep.
Then, far away, the thudding of the guns."
