Now It's My Turn ...

Me and the SNJ-6
(Not the one in the background, the one I'm in)
Yup, growing up I was interested in aircraft.

And tanks ...

And artillery ...

And dinosaurs ....

And Napoléon ...

And, well, lots of stuff. First and foremost though, the military and the history thereof.

Juvat and Tuna were reminiscing, I am too, but my mind operates on pictures ...

So, here we go.

Yes, it's good to reminisce.

Be well my friends.

  4. Very Nice, Sarge!
A minor quibble. When you and I were at the Kun, the 8TFW was flying F-4D's. The most notable difference is the underside of the radome. The C model has a smooth protrusion (RHAW Gear?) while the D model had an additional bump on it's protrusion. No big deal, it was not only an 8TFW jet, but also an 80TFS (aka Juvats) tail number and according to the USAF Serial Number search 7-589 had a confirmed kill of a Mig 21 on Jan 2 1967. I liked the picture as it had a different armament load than I flew with in the Phantom. Live AIM 9's and AIM 7's. Those were the weapons of Hunters, not Bombers. Audentes fortuna Juvat!

    1. But I was also at Kadena when the 18th flew the C and the D (we also had a squadron of RF-4Cs). I worked on three versions of the mighty Phantom, the F-4C, F-4C Wild Weasel, and the F-4D. Yes, the bird depicted wasn't at Kadena or Kunsan, I never worked on that particular jet. But it is a valid representation of the jets I did work on. And, as you say, I like the picture.

  5. My father, age 5, spent his annual allowance to ride in a barnstormer's airplane at the county fair. Sat between the pilots feet. In his forties he was financially able to buy an airplane and earn his Private license. We bought a 1939 Piper J-4 and both earned our Private ticket in it. Later he bought a Cessna 182.

  7. Question Sarge; is the first photo of/from an SNJ or an AT-6? You've confused me; not hard to do, admittedly.

    2. Gotcha! It's rare to see the "dash" designation ("-6") for SNJ's

  9. I have a million pictures of my childhood and early Navy career but they're all in need of getting scanned and digitized. It's good that you've taken the time.

    1. It amazes me just how few pictures I have from my days in the Air Force. Most of the time I was either too busy, couldn't have a camera around (frowned upon on the flight line), or was doing classified work. It's like the Italian guards from the Vatican were following me around, "No photo, no photo."
