Ok, Campers, still not a lot going on at Rancho Juvat. Weather has been beautiful, not too hot (mid 80's), not too cold (low 60's). Just about perfect. The good news is, my leg seems to be getting a bit better. I can walk a bit more comfortably, most of the time. I think I've been to virtually all the Doctor's in town, none seem to know what to do about it, but, as I said, it does seem to be getting better. We'll see.
My favorite travel agent (AKA Mrs Juvat) is planning vacations left and right. Mid-November, she's set up a wine cruise for the "gang" from our friend's previously owned winery. The Husband, the winemaker had passed away. The Wife, the Business Manager decided to sell the winery. The folks who bought it, well, they're not really personable. So, the "gang" has kinda gone out on our own.
| This is pretty much the group going on the cruise, as I said, "The Gang" |
In any case, about 14 folks are going on a riverboat cruise in Portugal on the Duoro River which runs through the Portugese Wine Country. The boat holds about 100 passengers, so, it won't be too crowded.
And...They provide wine on the boat. So....We've got that going for us.
This is where we'll be.
Should be a lot of fun
One of the many reasons I married Mrs J is she is a very kind hearted person and goes way out of her way to try and help folks having "difficulties". As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Little J and LJW had a miscarrage. Mrs J and I went through a few of them between Little J's birth and MBD's, so we (especially she) understand the feelings. So, we're sitting out on the front porch enjoying a nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc a couple of evenings ago (temperature was about 75 with about 5K of wind, quite delightful), while watching Axis Deer transit our property. (Drives the Great Pyrenees bat-shit crazy. I like to laugh at the looks the deer give the dogs, since they're on another side of the fence. Yes, it's a great life we live here!).
Anyhow...we're sitting there when Mrs J, out of nowhere, asks if I'd like to go on a cruise sometime around Christmas. Since we'll have come back from a cruise less than a month before, the cash register bells in the back of my head started going off. So, I hemmed and hawwed a bit. Then she ran over our out of pocket expenses for the Portugal trip. Hmmmm! Seems our trip was covered by her commission with quite a bit left over.
She then mentioned that since Little J, LJW and Miss B would be coming home for Christmas, it might be a good opportunity to get them in a family adventure with us, them and MBD, the Rev and their two kids. Take their minds off of things.
She's a smart cookie, way smarter than me (not that that's too hard), so I said "Great Idea!" and gave it my blessing. Just a 5 day cruise, get's back on Christmas Eve. It's a Disney cruise ship which pretty much ensures it'll be a very Christmas and Kid oriented cruise program. I mean, they've even got a Pirate Knight Night. ARRRGGGHHH, Mateys! So, it should be a blast. The whole gang is excited. Which is good!
Beans, I think they've got room for one more (Big) kid if you want to tag along. I'd pay big money for photo evidence of you in an elf costume. Yes, I would! (And I'd have subject matter for several future posts, which'll keep Sarge happy.)
So, as I said, a lot of ups and downs lately, but it looks like the more prominent vector now is a 90 degree Afterburner Climb. Thank You, Lord!
Much like this!
Damn, I miss that! And, that's with 2 external tanks, You should try it with a clean jet! Gotta get the landing gear up REAL fast.
Peace out, y'all!
Encouraging to hear the leg is getting better though vexing that the medicos seem to be stumped. River cruise seems to be just the ticket, is the ship big enough to hold all those wine glasses juvat? :)
ReplyDeleteNylon, one certainly hopes it’s big enough, but given that it stops at several wineries, we should be OK.
DeleteI hope!

Time for an elf joke.
ReplyDeleteWhat are Santa's elves called?
The subordinate Clauses.
Dearieme,
DeleteGood one!

I'll toss in a prayer to the Patron Saint of legs for you. Looking forward to your cruise posts. It's nice that you have a gang to hang with. Mindi and I love traveling, but other than her sister/b.i.l, there's no one we can see ourselves traveling with. Our closest friends (& God son's parents) were headed that way, until they headed into divorce. Is this your first river cruise? We find them far different, but far better than the big boats.
ReplyDeleteTuna,
DeleteFirst river cruise? Oh HECK no. Danube, Rhine, Seine and Loire. We'll be aces on the completion of this one. (Should I paint 5 river boats on the side of my truck? We really like them. You are right, the smaller size makes the cruise a lot more relaxing as well as getting the boat into places the big cruise lines haven't a hope of getting into. That having been said, Wine Cruises are big money makers on the large ships. Profitable for the Winery involved, the cruise line and the travel agent that worked her butt off getting it all coordinated. She's getting pretty good at setting them up. My role is to schlep, open and pour wine. Right at the top of my skill level.
Next one she plans, I'll send you the info so you can sign up if interested.

You get a River Cruise Ribbon with a bronze star. You only get to paint 5 river cruise boats on your ride if you've sunk them.
DeleteI swear, you have to knock those AF types around...
Yeah, yeah, yeah! 😉
DeleteAhh, ok. I think I knew that about your cruise kill count, but forgot. Wine-schlepper sounds good on a resume!
DeleteTuna,
DeleteYes, well...I yam what I yam!
juvat
ERJ, glad you leg is slowly getting better. I will go with all the prayer and well wishes.
ReplyDeleteThat is unfortunate about the new purchasers. These things happen, sadly, and almost never to the betterment of the business (in my opinion). Glad your group is still traveling on! The Ravishing Mrs. TB will be in Spain and Portugal starting next week for two weeks.
If there is a pirate night on the ship, pictures of you in a hat or it did not happen.
THBB,
DeleteThankfully, it does seem to be getting better. Walking is getting a lot less painful.
Pirate night? Pictures, Count on it! :-)
juvat
Pictures/videos are definitely planned. There are a surprising number of Disney cruise/pirate outfits available online for purchase. 😉
DeleteLooking forward to seeing all y'all soon!

Leg getting better? Good.
ReplyDeleteWhy has it taken so long to heal? A question you should seek answers for.
Wine trips, on small boats, good times.
What OAFS said. Do they at least have you on one of those compression/decompression leg thingies?
DeleteGot a little ahead of myself. Went and put chlorine in our septic. Didn’t have strength to stand back up. Mrs J had to come and help me up. In my recliner with an ice pad on it. Nuts!
DeleteIt had been getting better pretty consistently for the past few days.
juvat
Beans, apparently not. Probably coulda used one a little while ago
Deletejuvat
Sounds like cruising (as a passenger, not the crew) is a lot of fun, so go ahead and enjoy!
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that being away and having fun will be interrupted by Realtors demanding you sell them your casa and rancho muy pronto.
JB
That would be nice. Who knows? We’re showing the house twice tomorrow, maybe we’ll get lucky!

I am happy that you are on the mend. Time is your friend, in things like these, no matter how frustrating it is.
ReplyDeleteStB, unfortunately…see my response to Sarge above.
Deletejuvat
What Port are you Disneying out of? Canaveral or Miami? If you have a choice, Canaveral has regular rocket launches thanks to SpaceX, which is always a nice sight to see.
ReplyDeleteIf'n you're sailing out of Miami, you can land at Orlando International and take the Brightline train from OIA to Miami. Fun addition to the trip. Cocoa doesn't have a station, yet (scheduled for 2028.)
As to cruising, until I am single (we hope to both die of old age at the same time, sometime in the next 2-3 hundred years) I kind of am a stay-at-home dude. But thanks for the offer. I would gladly dress up as a Santa-elf for friends and family. A happy, rotund elf with allergies. Sure. Anything for friends and family. Muhahahaha...
Actually Disneyland isn’t on the itinerary. It’s an out and back from Galveston. But the Grands are young enough they won’t miss the park and I think they’ll love the characters.
DeleteJuvat
Disney cruises out of Galveston? Whodathunk. The traditional ports for Disney Cruises were Port Canaveral (at Cape Canaveral, duh) and Miami.
DeleteIsn't that against Florida law somehow?D4
DeleteYeah, I had thought we were flying to Florida for this short cruise, Mrs J straightened me out on that one. Houston and Galveston (the latter especially) are becoming big cruise ship ports. Galveston is my preferred, a lot easier to get in and out of than Houston.
DeleteD4,
DeleteProbably, but I live in Texas.
juvat
Glad you’re on the mend. I saw that takeoff at RAF Valley in Anglesey about 40 years ago. Outstanding!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've done a few myself, they are, well....Exhilirating to say the least.
Deletejuvat
Nice air work. I'm happy that you are feeling a bit better and can get around more easily.
ReplyDeleteWE used to fly the Deuce after take-off in burner, level, at something like fifty feet or so to excite the JNs at the end of the runway. They were down there waving longish bamboo poles with red flags on them, saying, "No F-105s at Itazuke!" Well to bad for them, don cha know.
It was easy to do because the Wing DO was a jock of the best kind and we had lots of gas and we needed low level training (yes, the Deuce). It's a secret, but it came in handy down above the jungle a year later.
At George I can remember doing a clean TO in the Phantom, which led, somehow, to an Immelman turn (probably ATC's fault, wanting me to level off at 1500' without a proper heading). It was a popular thing to watch from the tower, I'm told. Fun in the beast, as well.
Everybody here needs to read "Tap Code" by Col. Carlyle "Smitty" Harris. This review of the Hanoi Hilton is not on Yelp.
Fuzz, D4
Fuzz,
DeleteThanks.
As I wrote last week, our Eagle Wing King was much like your DO. Having that kind of Leader goes a long way to making an excellent fighter squadron. I have had both types, I know which one I prefer.
For those interested, a summary of "Tap Code" can be found here. Unfortunately, the author has gone to his reward.

I'm not prone to envy. That said, an afterburner takeoff!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDidn’t do them all that often ( burn through a lot of gas). But We did do that when we were sitting Air Defense alert at Osan ROK. The alarm went off, we had no idea if it was practice or real until we were airborne. So. Throttles to max and straight up. Since we were not closing on the 40 something miles to the DMZ. The radar controllers had time to figure out real or fake. We got the Disneyland E ticket to the max. My prayer as I lit the burners was “Lord, I don’t feel the need to fight this battle right now, but if necessary please don’t let me screw it up” Fortunately, he never did,
