Come Monday

Well, Campers, had a pretty different week than usual here at Rancho Juvat.  The Rev was asked if he could officiate a wedding down in Houston.  The Bride and Groom were friends of MBD and he, so he said sure.  The personnel and logistics aspects of the project (AKA Grandkids) required a bit of tweeking.

So, Mrs J, being the caring person she is, told them that she'd drive over and take care of the grandkids for the rehearsal day, the wedding day and the RTB day.  Unfortunately, since we have 9 animals on the property, I was going to stay and handle their needs.

It was interesting,  I don't know the last time Mrs J and I have been away from each other for more than a couple of hours.  I gotta admit it was a bit lonely round these parts.

Spent a lot of time on the computer searching the internet and in so doing learned a thing or two.  Now, I may have told you that I'm a big Jimmy Buffett fan, may he rest in peace.  One of my favorites is also his first hit, Come Monday.

Did a little research on the background of the song (also known as clicking links on DuckDuckGo).  Seems Mr. Buffett was having a bout with depression.  He hadn't made it big yet but was traveling to various gigs.  His Wife was staying at home.  He had just finished one performance and gone back to his hotel.  According to this article, he was seriously thinking of calling it quits, in the bad way,  But, the lyrics came to him and in the course of the night the song was finished.  And was an overnight hit.  It was released when I finished HS and has been one of my favorites ever since.  Glad things worked out and he changed his mind.  As I said, I like his music.

Unfortunately, he has passed from Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.

Damn!

My next most favorite musician is Toby Keith.  I kinda think of him as a Country and Western version of Jimmy Buffett.  His songs are lively and a lot of them are downright funny.

I can't think of one of his songs I don't like, but there is one that is my favorite.

Unfortunately he also died from Cancer. RIP both of you.

My own personal "Come Monday" with Mrs J in College Station wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped.  Not having any adult supervision within a couple hundred miles seems like it would be a thrill.  Not so much.

Played quite a few games of "Bloons TD6" on my new iPad. Surfed virtually all the links on Sarge's site (Well those who have posted in the last month or so anyhow).  Had a Steak and Baked Potato dinner the first night, and a Pork Chop and potato salad the next night.  Tried to finish up the Book Box Christmas Gifts, but couldn't get the rubber edge trim to look right.

That's one of Mrs J's talents, so I waited until she got back.

My big requirement was caring for the animals.  The two horses, Cabernet and Merlot are my usual routine so no big deal, hay and grain morning and evening.  The two cats, Schmedley and MouseKa are also no big deal,  Kibble in the bowl and water in the gravity waterer.

The five dogs however...

As mentioned here, 80% of them are generally calm, quiet and well behaved.  Gryndll, however, seems to be changing the rules and attempting to seize power over, initially, the other dogs.  But I can see it in his eyes.  He wants to rule Rancho Juvat and all it's occupants.

First indication of this is any food in sight is his, at least, in his mind.  The cat's food is safe for now as they're behind closed doors in the master suite.  The horse's are also safe being in the barn/paddock.  The other dog's food as well as the human food however...

We've achieved a temporary victory in the battle of the dog food.  Each of the dogs is put into a separate room with the door closed.  Other than scratch marks on the doors (Beans, on the inside, they want out, on the outside, Gryndyll want's in) this seems to be working. So we'll see how this ends.

The human food is another issue.  As mentioned elsewhere, I am the cook.  I like to try new dishes and I enjoy the cooking process.  Mrs J seems to like the results so...so be it.  However, I am notorious for turning my back on a plate of something as I'm doing  a different preparation.

Yep, the first clue that I screwed up is a munching sound behind me.  Son of a Bitch! (Literally, so not cussing.)

Just got to have more situational awareness of the location of the canine foe in the battle space.  Probably need to invite Sarge down here to install some Radar and RHAW gear.

Or something.

Finally, we've been putting the GP's outside at night.  Gryndlyll barks which irritates Atticus who barks.  Usually this occurs right outside our bedroom window.  While Mrs J was away, this happened both nights.  Little to no sleep.  This morning, I logged on to Amazon and took the advice of several commenters from the aforementioned post.

The Bark Collar is supposed to be delivered tomorrow.

We'll see how Gryndyll likes it.

And...Since yesterday (Sunday) was Mrs. J's Birthday and another decade in the record books, we opened one of my Dad's Pinot Noirs.  I'd inherited them when he passed.  Never could bring myself to open one.  Got past that hurdle, finally.

Man, was it good! Even for a Monday!

Peace out y'all

A nice posting for the wee hours pre-coffee. Awaiting my beloved's wake up.

Sometimes I wake up grumpy, mostly I let her sleep LOL.

    1. Michael,
Yeah, I'm sitting in my office. He's directly outside my window, barking at....the wind? Cows? Who knows?
Thanks, Yeah I have one of those pre-wakeup coffees. I get through the "news" before the task list is published.
You're fairly brave, or are absolutly certain she doesn't read this blog, with that last commment. ;-)

  2. Radar might be the answer, how about that Tracker from the Aliens movie juvat? Was going to recommend elevating food dishes upon completion to the top of fridge but then...GP. Good luck with the collar.....:)

    1. Nylon, when I'm thinking ahead and concious of the problem I have a usable solution. Our kitchen has two ovens and a microwave. I rarely use more than one of those at a time. So, if I remember, I put the food in those and close the door. Gryndll hasn't figured out how to open them...yet!
I really hope the collar works. I'm getting pretty tired.

  3. We had a beagle and learned those lessons several times- she was voracious and had a nose that got her into a lot of trouble so I feel for ya.

I had only heard the song Margaritaville when I was in college, but when I got to the Gulf Coast, I fell in love with his music. Went to a concert in Tampa and it was great fun. My sister is a certified parrot-head.

    1. Tuna,
We had a beagle mix named Oskar, as in Oskar Meyer Wiener Dog. Good dog, except when he got excited. Then it was a long "WOOOOO" kind of bark. Gryndyll seems to just enjoy barking. I look outside at what he's looking at and don't see a problem. The Cows are usually about half a mile away, so maybe he's inviting them to join him for a beer or something. Who knows?
A few years ago, Mrs J surprised me by taking me to a Jimmy Buffett concert. What a blast!!! Music was great, the crowd was happy, the weather was perfect. Wish I could go to another one.
      So...I guess I'm a certified parrot-head also.

  4. DANG! Picking up hitchhikers! And having them in the open bed of the truck!!!!!! I spent a lot of miles in the back of a pickup. Good times. Listened to a lot of Jimmy Buffet on AM radio in my '72 Chevy Vega hatchback. From Wikipedia: "Buffett called his music "drunken Caribbean rock 'n' roll".[77]
"It's pure escapism is all it is...I'm not the first one to do it, nor shall I probably be the last. But I think it's really a part of the human condition that you've got to have some fun. You've got to get away from whatever you do to make a living or other parts of life that stress you out. I try to make it at least 50/50 fun to work and so far it's worked out." -Jimmy Buffett"
    Good music to relax to.

Re the food thief - some hot pepper sauce on some bait might be the cure.

    1. Joe,
Chevy Vega Hatchback? I had a 74 Spirit of America Vega Hatchback. Parents bought that for me for making the Deans List both semesters freshman year. Had it through pilot training when the aluminum block cracked in the engine. Liked the car, but there were a lot of problems with it. It died when I was in Pilot Training.
I hadn't seen that quote from Jimmy Buffett. Seems to describe him pretty well and upon reading it this morning, I realized that I had pretty much fallen into that mindset also. Yeah that my "go to relax" playlist also.
Chemical warfare on the dog. Might give that a try.
      Thanks

  5. Oddly enough I never got into Jimmy Buffett, not sure why. His music is catchy and relaxing at the same time, man was a superb songwriter. Just not something I really got into. Country and western has never been a favorite of mine, though it has grown on me.

So you got to play "Home Alone," been there, done that Sucks, doesn't it?

While I love dogs, they are very much a pack animal, so you get pack behavior. Cats don't give a ... So a lot of them (not all) are pretty low maintenance.

Convalescing still, bland diet for a few days, but at least I'm on the sunny side of the grass.

    1. Sarge, different strokes for different folks. I've been a Buffett fan since HS. As to C&W, when you live in Texas, it's kinda hard to avoid it and it kinda grew on me. I'm not a big fan of "twangy" C&W, but I do like a "Toby Keith" like style.
I've had dogs pretty much all my life, inherited cats when I married Mrs J. Been able to successfully "train" both (training cats' is more them training you). Gryndyll is a pretty good dog, I'd just like to get some sleep at night. We'll see how things work out.
Glad things are going in the right direction health-wise for you. Stay on target and take it easy. Pay attention to the Dr. You know the routine.
You're on our prayer list. Get better soon. You got some RHAW gear to install ;-)

  6. From the little I know from my sister and Brother-in-Law's GP, they are very much a dominance breed. Best of luck and I hope the collar works for you.

We are now something like 7 months into more or less living in separate parts of the country (although we have seen each other during that time). The longest time is actually right now; I will see the family as a whole for the first time since July and The Ravishing Mrs. TB since Labor Day. Likely her full time relocation will not happen until sometime in January or beyond. One copes.

To be fair, you sound like a far more elegant cook on your own than I. I devolve to "quick and easy".

    1. THBB,
I agree they are a dominating animal. However, the fighter pilot in me is very dominance oriented also. I intend to win this fight.
My Mom was an excellent cook and I used to "Help" her when she was prepping dinner. I've got a lot of her hand written recipes that I found. Still pretty good, although not necessarily good for you. That having been said, I also turn to quick and easy quite often also.

  7. Re Chemical warfare: It does work. When I had dogs who were in the puppy stage, I had a couple of firm talks about how chewing rungs of the kitchen chairs was not an approved activity...when that didn't work, I painted some Tabasco sauce on the said rungs...Not another tooth nibble...my next door neighbor had a very large Golden who had decided she was gonna prune the lilacs...so I told my neighbor to try sprinkling some cayenne pepper around to see if it would help. Took a couple of weeks, and needed to be refreshed after a rain, but Maggie learned to leave those lilacs alone.

So far as cooking goes, I would fix a plate, dose with a liberal hand with either hot sauce or cayenne pepper (be sure ya keep the plates straight and don't eat it yourself!!!) and then put it where he knows he is not supposed to touch it but likes to sneak it anyways, and then when you catch him at it, yell at him for all your worth to keep up appearances. When you catch him, flip him over onto his back and hold him there belly up for a little bit. That's what the Alpha dog would do to impress on him you mean business!

Your other option is to put him outside whenever you are cooking in the kitchen, before you begin.

I'm mean. It is a "my house, my rules apply, and you will obey" situation. Especially with dogs who like to push the barriers, like my friend's German shepherd, or the pack of Jack Russell/Corgie/Rat terrier mixes they have. She says I'm the only one who everyone sits to get a treat from, other people get jumped on. Because I don't put up with it. It helps that I have been consistent with them since they were all young too. But, truthfully, terriers are THE worst, stubborn doesn't begin to describe it. Sounds like your Gryndyll is the same. I would try the hot sauce.

    1. Suz,
Good info, thanks. It’s still pretty hot around here so long outside time for the very furry GP’s is not optimum. I do like the hot sauce plan though. Suits my diabolic tendencies. Think I’ll give that a shot.

  9. When you posted this Miss Jeanie was returning from three nights away in St. Augustine. Celebrating her 80th with the “girls”. I cooked Asian, as she’s not that big a fan of greasy mess on the stove. I was happy and found some interesting things in the freezer to stir fry.
When we were tdy to Osan in ‘62, there was a great “Mexican Restaurant” downtown somewhere. They had marvelous carné in red sauce. We always spoke amongst ourselves about how there weren’t many dogs around the neighborhood. But then, you live in Texas.

  10. (htom) Jimmy Buffet ... didn't fit into the music industry boxes. Met him once, early 70's; he was busking at a bar and was surprised to be recognized. The guy you see in his videos with his daughter is the guy I met and chatted with for a couple of hours. He changed a little, but he gave himself away to the world and the world gave itself to him. RIP, Jimmy. Glad you made it.
