Singing Second

CBS Sports Screen capture
Okay, I know, I know. I'm in the middle of a "Vignette" but truthfully, when the Army-Navy game is on, everything is paused.

A superb outing by the Boat School. Singing second is the best.

I know, I was Air Force, my Dad and his Dad were Army, but all three kids were Navy, both sons-in-law are Navy, Big Time is still an aviator on active duty in the Navy, and Tuttle is a graduate of Annapolis, old retired aviator that he is. (Sorry about the "old" crack Tuttle, but that's what retirees are, old! 😎😉)

So yes, go Navy, beat Army ...

Which they did. In a big way.

Singing first is not the goal ...

Singing second is!!!

Horvath had a hell of a game, kid is a stud.

But this guy? Yup, the OAFS play of the game. Fake punt with a snap to the nose tackle on defense ...

What?

Yup, the nose tackle.

Who runs for a HUGE first down.

Being a big guy myself, I love to see the big guys carry the ball.

We'll get back to the woods with the tankers on Tuesday. Right now, it's basking in the glow of a Navy victory.

To my Army friends, especially the West Pointers - looking at you Jim (fellow tackle in high school) - better luck next year. You guys did have a helluva season and you've got nothing, repeat nothing, to be ashamed of.

Sometimes you get the goat ...

Sometimes the goat gets you.

  1. I managed to watch the whole game. Usually I end up tuning in about half way through the 1st quarter. Even saw the "Prisoner Exchange." Which had me baffled until someone explained it. Nice bit of ceremony.

It looked like USMA hired the Raiders play the game this year.

    1. I had to look up the "Prisoner Exchange." Another one of those "learn something new everyday" things!

    2. Joe - Yes, I often miss the early minutes because we're out doing something. Not the case this year, got to see the entire game. What was also kinda neat this year is that I've been to a game at that stadium with The Nuke. Denver v. Washington on Christmas Eve, 2017.

    4. "Why is a Midshipman leading out a squad of Cadetmls, and why is a Cadet leading out a squad of Midshipman?" I pondered. So I asked over in the Neptunus Lex FB group. I didn't even know what to call it. Got the answer in jig time.

  2. Sounds like an entertaining and exciting game. The way things should be .

  3. Football- Bah, Humbug!

But, interservice rivalries are good, so I'll make an exception for the Army Navy Game.

That pic with the CBS Sports microphone in the center is sort of shocking. Those kids around the jock hardly look old enough to be in the Boy Scouts ("where they have adult leaders") let alone almost ready to be officers leading troops in combat. I almost think the kid on the left is photoshopped as he looks exactly like Alfred E. Neuman ("What, me worry?") from MAD Magazine.

Just a grumpy old retired guy, I guess, so might as well holler "Get off my lawn" and go take a nap.

One question- Navy players have various insignia on the left shoulder of their jerseys- One on left has Special Forces and Airborne tabs, center guy has Airborne wings, and guy on right has a Navy squadron patch. Are these guys showing stuff reflecting prior service, or is that just Cosplay decoration picked at random. If the former, I salute them, if the latter, shame on them.

    1. Players don't choose what's on the jersey, so meh. This football game is rich with tradition but it has been somewhat sullied in the past decade or so. Service academies should look for officers, not football players (blame the flags for that crap). All that being said, if I could only watch one game per year, I'd pick this one.

    2. I only watch one game per year - this one. Have had to rep the Sea Services many times overseas amidst mostly Army/AF colleagues; even though I am NOT a trade school alum. Many of the best years have been these unexpected upsets.
And as for recruiting officers, not football players; these guys a) have to go to class more than their civilian counterparts and rarely get to walk into the sweet pro deals like their "college" rivals. Yes there have been exceptions - the Robinson travesty comes to mind - but by and large these are better people than any other collegiate athletes.

  4. I love everything about this game even though I only work for the parent company, and not a graduate myself. Besides the actual game, is all the spirit spots, the stories about the rivalry, and the more recent addition to the fanfare of the week is the themed uniforms that have been outstanding for several years. The jolly Rogers this year was excellent, and having that squadron do the flyover was the pièce de résistance.
