| The New Computer and Monitor OAFS Photo |
Of course.
The monitor did arrive in a reasonable amount of time to set it up and start the whole "new computer set-up" game. It always takes a while because while the computer is new, it's been sitting around for a few days missing all those wonderful Windows updates. Which can take a while (30 minutes to three hours in my experience, no, really).
As I was exhausted from having been up since the butt crack of dawn, I was just too damn tired to bother. After all, the machine will still be there in the morning, won't it?
Now as I mentioned in the footnote yesterday, due to maintenance down the street, I had no water for a good seven hours. I was prepared though, had numerous strategically placed containers of water about the house. Toilet flushing and hand washing would not be an issue.
Anyhoo.
Whilst sitting in my computer room, doing computer things but mostly waiting for the new machine, I heard a dripping noise. Hhmm ... Maybe the water is back on.
A trip to the bathroom indicated that the water was NOT back on, yet I could hear the sound of water dripping. Hhmm ...
Now two years ago, one of our mini-splits, these things ...
Had developed an issue with its drainage tube. Now these things cool the air by removing moisture from it, that water has to go somewhere, neh? There's a drip tray inside with a tube which leads to the outside. Well, the tube somehow had gotten clogged.
Guess what?
Yup, that was the dripping noise I heard. After turning it off, I called our mini-split guys and they'd send someone out the next day. As it's in the 60s at night, not having air conditioning wasn't that big of an issue. As it might be on the morrow. Something else to lose sleep over I suppose.
And I did.
But the guy showed up early enough that by the time the temperature "soared" into the mid-70s, Monsieur mini-split was back in action. Now we did spend some time discussing this misbehaving piece of equipment and there were a couple of reasons it could have happened.
Perhaps the drainage tube got pinched during the installation, not enough to completely clog it, but narrowing it enough that over time (say two years) enough detritus could gather to block the tube.
So my guy wrote a note inside the front cover of the unit. Now these things need to be serviced periodically and ours were serviced in July. So the note said (basically) "this unit is a problem child, when you service it, blow out the drainage tube." For such things aren't natural but they happen. Should help in the long run, short of tearing the installation apart to really fix it. Yeah, I'd like to avoid that ...
So between the new computer requiring set up and fussing about the mini-split malfunction, I was up around 0700, which is a good two hours earlier than I'd like. It's exhausted I am.
But come Hell or high water ...
I'm sleeping in Wednesday!
And for what it's worth, I love the new machine. Fast, quiet, and powerful. I'm loving it.
Damn it, just noticed that the grass needs cutting. Sigh, we'll get back to those Germans waiting for the Soviet attack any day now.
No, really ...

Those odd and to-be-hoped for infrequent sounds around the homestead.......the joys of home ownership Sarge. New computer looks snazzy, liking that mousepad.......:)
ReplyDeleteI got that mousepad at work, some twenty years ago. Only started using it in the last year. Frankly, I'd forgotten that I had it until I was going through some stuff from my desk at work just before I retired. I like it a lot!
DeleteI got to experience humidity here a few days ago, upper 90s F and a whopping 54% humidity. I know that's pleasant by East of the Divide standards, maybe East of the Big Muddy standards, but for a coastal California boy that's gawdawful.
ReplyDelete54%? Yeah, that isn't much, but when it's 90, it's enough. GulfCoast you'll see both numbers in the 90s, DAMHIK.
DeleteIs the computer the whole box on the right? Or is it inside an aircondlting unit?
ReplyDeleteLooks like your electric bill is going to go up a bit, but I think you’re gonna have fun.

It is that whole box, though the black bits do all the work. The rest is for the movement of the air driven by the seven fans, three of which are at the top of the box. The big white thing in the midst of all that black is the liquid cooling unit for the processor. One thing that shouldn't happen is the processors overheating. I played a graphics intensive game yesterday for well over two hours (hey, I'm retired, I do what I want) and the temperatures I can monitor (with hwinfo64, which you can get for free) never went up. I am liking this machine.
DeleteAs to the electricity bill? We'll just have to wait and see.
Bah, humbug. Way too new, high tech, colorful, and space consuming for my taste, but if it works for you, that is fantastic.
ReplyDeleteGood news on the drip problem. Had a house in Florida many, many moons ago with a clogged condensate drain which eventually rotted away some studs, flooring and a joist. That really stretched my construction skills, but also raised my interest in attending to small problems while still small. It was being rented out at the time, in the foolish anticipation that Uncle Sam would send us there again, so not a problem we were aware of until the tenants left.

Yeah we’ve had a few “not my house, not my responsibility” renters. Just let the landlord know, they’ll fix it. If they don’t, move out!

When you own a place you're more concerned with little things which could become bigger (more expensive) things down the road.
DeleteAs to the computer, it's probably way more than you need. Me? Big, fast, colorful, I'm all that. 😎
I hate those "not my house" types. You should treat other people's stuff the same as you'd treat your own.
DeleteBastiges.
Can't stand all those colors in the computer. Gahhh...
ReplyDeleteGlad it works.
And, yes, drainage tubes tend to get snotted up with weird snotty stuff. It's one of those AC things that unscrupulous AC techs love to unscrupulously exploit.
Also, for all those out there who have National Geographic Channel, there's a cool show called "Top Gun: The New Generation." Navy pilots flying the T-45 Goshawk. Interesting enough that Mrs. Andrew really loved it. First episode was about strike bombing and it was very very interesting. Gotta watch the minimal altitude and the G-forces, dontcha know.
Yeah, the colored lights and all aren't for everyone. But the lights give my desk a pleasant aspect in the wee hours.
DeleteI'll see if I can't access that show. Naval aviation, love it.
For those of us with whole house AC, dumping a cup of bleach down the condensate drain once a year seems to work well, especially if the crew who installed it made an easy "tap" in the drain line to do so.
DeleteGood advice.
DeleteSarge, is the condensate line routing to the outside? What a bummer that you had an issue, but lucky you found out before it was serious.
ReplyDeleteYes, it runs to the outside.
