You Can't Beat the View...

I've been in worse places.

Flights weren't too bad. Wearing a mask while on an aircraft is, how do I put it, awful. Simply awful.

Now to work...

  1. I have it on good authority that, if you’re eating, you can take off the mask.

    Nice digs.

    1. Yes, very true. Next time I'm buying more snacks.

    2. As a note, they make you take snacks out of your carry on before scanning, so better to get them once past security.

  2. Eh, pretty nice. Be better closer to the ground. Don't like heights.

    Which flat-tops are those?

    2. Was going to ask that. Been on the Midway a lot helping their radio guys. They came up and helped us a lot on the Iowa so we returned the favor.

The unknown carrier is parked at Pier "J", if that helps....

    3. I was an inside loft rigger for Arcwel Ship repair back in the early 80's. I spent a lot of time working the bowels of Navy carriers at pier J. I was a crew chief in the Chair Force, '69-'73.

    4. Oh yeah... I'm a native of East County, San Diego, aka "the sticks". Now in training for Tennessee(a free state) hillbilly. If I don't make it, I'm still a Redneck. Love it here, water is plentiful.

    5. The carrier might be USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), someone thinks she's at North Island. I wouldn't know for sure. Not until I can make out her hull#.

    1. Holy Crap, Monday was beautiful. Hot but we had a nice breeze out on the pier.

  4. SoCal. The only place that has a swamp in California. So they built a Marine base there. Imagine a AF Buck Sargent on a 90 day TDY, back to MacDill for a week and a second 90 day TDY as an augmentee to the Commo guys there. Satellite dishes on the beach. The best part was the weekend trips into the city and sometimes across the border.

    1. Heh, roger that.

AF guy on a Marine base, that had to be fun. (I always seem to get along with Marines.)

    1. It is pretty nice. Sunset over San Diego Bay isn't too shabby either!

  7. Usta ride the "Nickel Snatcher" across that stretch of water. Flew out there when my dad passed in '74 and, wonder of all wonders, they had built a bridge. No more drives down thru Imperial Beach to get to town.

    1. Yeah, takes away some of the charm, but it is a lot easier.

  8. I know you’ll be busy, but if you get a chance to tour the Midway they’ve done a nice job with it, although it doesn’t have that fuel oil/JP-5/gym sock smell any more. CV-41 was my home around the same time you were at Kadena. If you do get aboard chevk out the F-4 for the big honking hooks for the bridle for the cat shot, outboard the forward Sparrow mounts. I was wondering if the USAF version still had those.
