Which Doctors?* Update #3

Well, Campers, it's been a pretty "Special" week at Rancho Juvat since last we spoke.  LJW/DIL arrived safely a week ago Sunday.  We've got her ensconced in our guest bedroom for the time being.  Guest reservations in both cabins til next weekend, doncha know.  The whole Baby ETA change thing has thrown the planned schedule off quite a bit.

She had an appointment with one of the local OB-GYN Doctors.  The Doctor had reviewed her records from HK and after giving her a look over agreed with that Doctor's diagnosis.  Unfortunately, the 'Burg's hospital doesn't have a NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Beans.  A term I've known less than a week, so don't feel bad!) so she highly recommended that LJW/DIL meet with a colleague of hers.  That Doctor has privileges in a hospital in San Antonio that does have a NICU.  His office is in Boerne (Burn-eee) which is about halfway between here and San Antonio.

Doable. Especially given the circumstances and rewards.

The good news is while LJW/DIL thought she was only ~25 weeks along, the Doctor in Boerne (henceforth "The Doctor") said she was more likely (as of today) about 27 weeks along.  This is excellent news as the viability of the baby goes way up if birth occurs after 28 weeks and continuously gets better after that.  Again, that knowledge has only recently been inserted into my brain.

She has another appointment in Boerne today.  Depending on answers given at that appointment, LJW will be boarding a flight and coming home.  While I'd love to have him home, I hope Grand Daughter #2 (GD2) gives him another couple of weeks or more.

Please, Lord?

On lesser drama, medicine wise, both Mrs. J and I have had positive reviews from our respective Doctors.  She had that "special" check up that involves a clear liquid diet to prep for.  No news is good news.  I had a follow up with my ENT Doc.  Everything checked out good, although I still have virtually no sense of smell.  That caused them to schedule another appointment in a few weeks to see if it has returned.  If not?  Who Nose?

The leg is still a bit bruised, but much less so than last week.  Aches at night a bit, but again better.  I have found that I'm much more situationally aware of my foot placement than I used to be.  Pain seems to be a pretty good teacher.

On a more pleasant note, this week was MBD and SIL's anniversary.  They came and stayed in one of the cabins during the week.  They were hoping for a little privacy for some reason, so MG stayed with us and we got to play Grandparents for a few days.  All by ourselves with no parental supervision.  Man, did we have fun!  We also had forgotten how much work almost 1 year old's can be!

Not much longer until re-childproofing the house is needed!

Still...wouldn't have traded a minute of it for all the money in the world.

Also this week we got a bit of something I believe is called...rain? Or something like that.

Got a couple of inches but the winds were gusting to 70MPH.  One of the clinics in town lost their entire metal roof.  We, thankfully, didn't have any damage.

Heck, juvat, even cows know to come in out of storms like that!

Lots of oars in the water, so please forgive my lack of comments on Sarge's story or his Portulaca postings.  I do read them, most of the time in a waiting room. I just don't like to comment using my phone.  My speling is bad enough with a regular keyboard.  Using the phone would render them Swahili-esque

Peace out y'all!

Update: Just got word from the Ladies.  The appointment went well.  The Baby's heart rate is normal and she appears to be doing fine.  LJW/DIL's blood pressure was a bit high. (I wonder why.) But other than that the Doctor seemed happy.  Thanks for all y'all's prayers.  Still got a way to go yet, but I'll take good news any time I can get it.

Update #2: The Doctor and the Ladies have decided that LJW/DIL will be staying in the hospital until delivery.  Little J has modified his flight reservation and will be here day after tomorrow.  Lots of somewhat minor things that I think were starting to add up.  I also think the drive time to Boerne was a factor.  Probably a good choice.

Update 3#:  All is well. GD2 was born about 2 PM yesterday.  Mom is doing well and the Premie Doctors are very happy with GD2's size, weight and organ functioning.  For those of you with Medical savvy, her APGAR rating was 6.7.  We were told that was very good.  More to follow on Monday as more development occurs.  Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers.

* a more politically correct way of spelling.

  1. Much domestic, much happiness, much enjoy juvat.........:) The clan is providing the medical community with much business also. Rainfall mixed in with winds that high can be a mixed blessing.

    1. Nylon,
Thanks, The medical stuff has taken a bit of orchestrating (who's going where when and who's going with?). We'll see what answers today brings and adjust accordingly.
High winds? Coulda been worse, we have a metal roof also. Now...THAT would have been bad.

  2. I hate to say it but the medical community certainly tarnished their escutcheon over the past two years. So take that as you will ...

Hopefully all goes well with the new grandchild.

    Rain? What's that?

    1. Having spent the first 40+ years of my existence with military doctors and rarely seeing the same one twice, I've got to say I think our Doctor is pretty good. We've been seeing him for ~15 years and his predecessor for about 5 before him. I trust his judgement and recommendations on which specialist to see. That having been said, your first sentence is definitely true.
Mrs. J and LJW/DIL will be heading to THE appointment in a couple of hours. LJW has flight reservations for Saturday with an option to move forward to this Wednesday based on that info. I'm in charge of generating electricity by twiddling my thumbs or...other duties as assigned.
      Rain? What's that?
      Rain is wonderful!

  3. I have a cousin, several layers removed, in Boerne. (She’s actually my father’s first cousin’s daughter).
    Another neat little town, Boerne.

MB’s grand nephew is just shy of two years and gave us a run for our money the other day.
    Fortunately, we were leaving.

Prayers for your DIL and all concerned.

    1. Skip,
Unfortunately, Boerne has pretty much become San Antonio NorthEast in the last few years. It definitely marks the spot where San Antonio traffic starts. Which is unfortunate because you were right, it was a very nice little town. That seems to be happening more and more around here. The 'Burg is starting to show similar signs. More's the pity.
Thanks for the Prayers, Skip, much appreciated.

    2. I lived in Boerne from 85-87. It was starting then. When we moved back to the SA area, we went to visit some old friends there. I didn't recognize the place. Well, our old place in the flats was still there, but main street was a caricature of it's former self.

    3. STxAR,
Yep, the 'Burg's main street is undergoing similar changes. Instead of wall to wall Mom and Pop stores, most of the stores now are Pseudo Mom and Pop's but owned by chains. Or wineries. I hadn't driven down Main in a few years, did it a couple of weeks ago. Man, was it different.

  4. Juvat, lots to be thankful for. You were able to find the properly equipped place for your DIL to present GD2-who is a couple of weeks farther along than previously thought, Mrs. Juvat got no bad news, "our" ENT gave you a thumbs up, you were able to play Grandparent for a few days, LJW is on the schedule to fly home, and you came through the "moisture/wind event" without damage.....and all in the area got some life giving rain (some more than others). G-D is Good!
We too came through the moisture/wind event with no damage and were thankful for every drop of moisture that fell. Do have to say I love the sound of rain falling on a metal roof.....hail, not so much.
Have to compliment you on giving the correct pronunciation of Boerne as it's another of those Hill Country town names that give visitors fits.
    Leaky is another one....pronounced Lake....eee.

Need to check out Leakey, I don't think I've ever been there.

  5. We got 0.30 inch of rain. super dry year down here. Baby stuff was fun. I miss the wonder they bring. We house-proofed our babies. It worked pretty well. Probably isn't PC to do that now. Corporal Punishment frustrates Major Disaster. But they learned to respect things. My wife would take them through the M.E. Moses store to teach them to keep their hands to themselves. She was like no other mom I've ever met.

    1. STxAR,
Same here. Got about a half inch a week ago Friday and a couple of inches in this storm (don't know for sure, my rain gauge blew away :-) but that's what people nearby said they got).
It was eye opening to go from the Air Force to teaching HS. The PC crap had just started to take over, but I could tell the seeds were sown. Fortunately, I taught an elective class, so I could tell them if they didn't like my rules, they were free to choose a different elective. Also Fortunately, the Principal was of similar mind, so she had my six. When she retired, well. let's just say I retired shortly thereafter.

    2. Solo recons out past the wire don't end well. You were well advised to cashier it and head to something rewarding. Thanks for keeping us udpated on the pretty part of Texas. I'm still of a mind to come and visit, but I'd need to covert the truck to steam with the current fuel price.

Keep up the scan, aviate, navigate, communicate....

    3. STxAR,
I just got back from Town. One of the chores was to fill up the truck. $3.999/Gal. Who would have ever thunk that would be a good price?
You're welcome any time, just need a little heads up.

  8. Ha. Knew what NICU meant a long time ago. Good acquaintance whose husband was a complete jackwagon was a NICU nurse. She lasted longer than most. Miss talking to you, Judith. Ah, good times.

Prayers for you and yours. And take care of yourself, dude.

As to rain, well. we no longer have crunchy grass though we did have a dry spring (which was nice because mosquitos weren't present during said dry spring.)

  10. Sorry Juvat - traveling, late to post. Prayers up, of course. Having had to courier at least one labor to the hospital within 15 minute of actual birth, it is far better to plan for these things ahead of time.

    1. THBB,
No worries, and thanks. Little J will be arriving tomorrow evening after 30 hours in Coach. Plan as of now it to stop by the Hospital for a bit to check on LJW/DIL, then take him home to sleep a bit. His body will wake him up early the following day, so he'll probably go visit. No prognosis on when the big event is likely to happen if it happens at all in the near future. Baby seems to be doing fine. Mom is the one with issues. I don't know if that's good or bad, but then again, I'm not a Doctor. So I'll listen to what they have to say and keep my mouth shut.
