Feeling a Bit, Off ...

OAFS Photo
One of those strange Saturdays in late March, temperature didn't get up much above 40° though it was a sunny day. Didn't feel too bad in the sun, other than the omnipresent wind giving the air more of a chill than I care for.

Felt out of sorts all day, then I stumbled over this while perusing stuff on YouTube. I've loved this song since I first heard it ...

It's a great tune in my book (though, as always, YMMV). Lately I've been a bit down on what was my favorite band for the last few years. Part of it is due to the loss of their drummer, Taylor Hawkins, four years ago. I saw the Foo Fighters for the first time before Taylor died, the energy was incredible. (The lead-in photo was before the show I saw them with Taylor on drums.)

I saw them with their new drummer, Josh Freese, back in 2024. The band was still great, but the energy was different. Not bad, just different. Then last year, they fired Josh. I haven't heard them with the new guy, Ilan Rubin. Drummers are an extremely critical piece of a band. Changing drummers sometimes changes everything.

Anyhoo, I'm starting to listen to their music again. I kind of missed them.

Who knows what the future holds, for now, I'll listen to the music, wherever it comes from ...

Wheels
Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins & Chris Shiflett

(One, two, three, four)

I know what you're thinkin'
We were goin' down
I can feel the sinkin'
But then I came around
And everyone I've loved before
Flashed before my eyes
And nothin' mattered anymore
I looked into the sky

Well, I wanted somethin' better, man
I wished for somethin' new
And I wanted somethin' beautiful
I wish for somethin' true
Been lookin' for a reason, man
Somethin' to lose

When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground (When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over, there's another round for you
When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)

Know your head is spinnin'
Broken hearts will mend
This is our beginnin'
Comin' to an end

Well, you wanted somethin' better, man
You wished for somethin' new
Well, you wanted somethin' beautiful
You wished for somethin' true
Been lookin' for a reason, man
Somethin' to lose

When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground (When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over, there's another round for you
When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)

[Instrumental Break]

When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground (When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over, there's another round for you
When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)
When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)
When the wheels touch ground (When the wheels touch ground)
And you feel like it's all over, there's another round for you
When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)

What do you Chanters like for music? Let me know in the comments.

I'm way too pensive to continue, so for the moment ...

Sarge, out.

Bully in the Alley ...

On 9 September 1813, the United States frigate USS PRESIDENT, Commodore John Rodgers, on his way home after a cruise, when a little to the southward of Nantucket, fell in with the 5-gun British schooner HMS HIGHFLYER, tender to HMS SAN DOMINGO, 74 guns, commanded by Second Lieutenant William Hutchinson. By passing as a British frigate and sending a lieutenant dressed in a British uniform on board her, Commodore Rodgers succeeded in getting the book of private British signals and the stations of the different British men-of-war on the American coast. Taking his measures accordingly he was able, on the same day, to enter unobserved into the harbor of Newport, Rhode Island.

I'm not quite ready to down tools and sail into the New Year. I've a few posts left in me 'til then.

Now you might, if ye're not of a nautical bent, wonder what the title of this here post is all about. Well ...

“While ashore, sailors did like to go out drinking, usually in groups. And they may not all have the same capacity for drink, leading to one sailor becoming incapacitated, or “bully”, while his mates were still willing to party on. Until they were all ready to go back to the ship, they would have to stash their mate someplace safe and out of the way — like the alley.” (Source)

Geez, sailors ... (Trust me, airmen are worse. In my experience, maybe it was just me ...) Anyhoo, there's a delightful sea shanty by that name. Help me Bob ...

Why yes, I have been "bully in the alley," once or twice. Of course, I'll gi' ye the lyrics ...

"Bully In The Alley"

Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Way-hey, hey-hey, bully in the alley
Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in shinbone al

Sally is a girl in Shinbone Alley
Way-hey, hey-hey, bully in the alley
Sally is the girl that I spliced dearly
Bully down in shinbone al, so

Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Way-hey, hey-hey, bully in the alley
Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in shinbone al

I found by self out under three-oh
Wey hey, bully in the alley
I found by self with time so free-oh
Bully down in Shinbone Al, so

Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Way-hey, hey-hey, bully in the alley
Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in shinbone al

I waltzed up to the angel little
Wey hey, bully in the alley
And kicked down the door, and walked right in oh
Bully down in Shinbone Al, so

Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Way-hey, hey-hey, bully in the alley
Help me, Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in shinbone al

I walked up to the barroom counter
Wey hey, bully in the alley
There I met with Greasy Artie
Bully down in Shinbone Al, so

Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Wey hey, bully in the alley
Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in Shinbone Al

Greasy Ann, it's slimy horror
Wey hey, bully in the alley
Henry shell back knock in her daughter
Bully down in Shinbone Al, so

Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Wey hey, bully in the alley
Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in Shinbone Al

I bought her rum and I bought her gin, oh
Wey hey, bully in the alley
And bought her wine, of white and red, oh
Bully down in Shinbone Al, so

Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Wey hey, bully in the alley
Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in Shinbone Al

We're open, tope a low light lark, oh
Wey hey, bully in the alley
Dawn and rain, can the cock did call, oh
Bully down in Shinbone Al, so

Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Wey hey, bully in the alley
Help me Bob, I'm bully in the alley
Bully down in Shinbone Al

Love the way Nathan Evans sings the old shanties, fellow Scot he is. He has a whole album of these tunes, I mean to get it. Good lad. Enjoy.

Can ye tell that I had a good night's sleep? Well, I did ...

October

(Source)
While my memory says autumn looks like the photo above, reality (as in Saturday's weather) tells me that autumn, October in particular, brings a lot of rainy days. Gray, rainy days, which tend to make me feel a bit melancholy.

So I turn to music, loud music. Makes it all better that does.

Anyhoo, still avoiding the war writing for the weekend, helps me recharge the batteries, not having to be creative for a few days. That and I am seriously, I mean world champion class, lazy. Give me a chance to lay about and do nothing at all, well, I'm your man.

Working all week is my excuse I suppose, that and I don't sleep much during the week, like to catch up on that on the weekends. Slept until 11:00 on Saturday, meh, didn't bother me, not at all.

Sure does make for short days though.

For now I'm making Sunday a music day, did last week, did this week, next week? Who knows where the road will take me ...

Love this version of the old Nirvana tune, lots of energy, multiple instruments from multiple artists around the world. Love the concept, love the music.

Heck, here's one more, found it after posting that bit above. This one touched me deeply.

To the lost ...

May they be found.

Be well.
