Open Mic "Night"

(Source)
Long Christmas weekend in New Hampshire with family, excellent time, though the drive up on Saturday and the drive back on Monday have left me somewhat worse for wear.

So talk quietly (or loudly if you wish) among yourselves. It's your time to complain, sing, tell jokes, whatever, the comments are open for your entertainment with the caveat, "Be Nice." Act as though your mother is going to read what you wrote.

Hopefully Mom has a sense of humor ...

Have at it!

Don't all start at once ...

  1. Warming up here finally, able to get outside to walk off some of those Christmas calories without putting on so many layers of clothing that makes a person resemble a penguin.

    1. Temps have "soared" into the mid-30s here. Been pretty chilly up to now.

  2. In the 40's right now in this part of the Tampa bay area but that's ok... I had a great Christmas at the Mother-in-law's and there is still good conversation here. Enjoy the day folks!

  3. Temperature continuing to climb here: last night of below freezing weather tonight, then on to the mid-70's during the day in two days.

Christmas was lovely; I am busily working on the list of things to do. Hope everyone is able to enjoy some time off!

    1. Week one of two weeks off here. Pretty chillly last week, supposed to get up into the 40s here later in the week, maybe even 50.

      I'll take it!

  4. Well my Mom certainly had a sense of humor -within bounds; don't blaspheme or "bad-mouth your country" as Gunny Foley put it in "Officer and a Gentleman". Otherwise; cleared hot.
Got a good reminder of why we don't live in places that have Midwest or Eastern winters; minus temperatures and wind make for miserable travels. Glad to be back West wherever have sunshine with our cold - and dry powder snow

    1. Friday got up to 60, tons of rain, loads of wind. Felt like a freakin' typhoon at times. Got down below 20 for the three days after that. (As a matter of fact, temps dropped forty degrees on Friday, 60-ish at midday, 20 around ten PM.)

      Almost balmy today at 40!

  5. Delayed sked trip across Wyoming from Thursday, when they just shut down the entire I-80 border to border due to extreme weather, until Friday. Open then, but kinda white knuckle with about 90 miles of it being packed ice/snow and black ice with quite a few big rigs in the median or on the side of the road, with high winds. Drive back yesterday was balmy 40's with bare and dry road all the way, although still windy. Wyoming is always windy, so no big deal.

Nice family visit, although some members were no shows due to flight problems.

I was happy to feed Sarge some serendipity history stuff recently, and will get some more done soon, but have a lot of other worky type stuff that has priority.
Happy Holidays to all, especially our host.

  6. Listen up shipmates- Time to cough up a few bucks.

"Scott the Badger" suffered a catastrophic house fire when the furnace in his rental place exploded on Christmas Eve, ending up as a total loss. Total, as in he got out okay, and he cheerfully notes that is the important part and the rest was "just stuff that can be replaced." Well, he has the clothes he was wearing, and his car and that is about it. A friend set up a Go Fund Me account aiming for $5,000. As anyone who has shopped knows, replacing clothes, boots, furniture, bedding, books, kitchen stuff, tools, computer and other tech gadgets we all take for granted, all adds up to a lot of money real quickly. Even shopping at cheap places, and thrift stores. Especially with no renter's insurance
Everyone here (and at other places we hang out) knows that Scott is one of the good guys, and this was no fault of his own.

Dig deep and throw a few bucks his way.

    2. I had a house fire last year and went out into the snow in my bare feet, I had spare tennies in the RV and I had the RV! I grabbed my laptop as I went out the door and my wife grabbed her purse. Our cat went into the bedroom to hide :-(
Losing everything like that is really hard.... It was all so fast too... It was close, I'm glad we're alive! A terrible thing..

    4. Funny sort of too... The next day you don't have clean underwear, no tooth brush. The simple stuff you are used to having "right there", the stuff that's been "right there" for years ... isn't. Like underwear. Remember that book you had all those notes in the margins? When I found myself looking for it two months later & I remembered what happened, it was sad.
I had BOTH of my backup hard drives in my desk, I was ready for a computer problem but not for that fire, I've fixed that now.
It takes some getting used too.

    5. Be delighted to contribute if there's a GiveSendGo account. I'll never use GFM again. A mailing address for a paper check would work as well.

    6. It was an interesting night, I will grant you.

We were having a " blizzard " at the time. The snow had stopped the 45 mph wind gusts remained. I was laying on my bed, reading, and BOOM! Is at up, and saw black smoke pouring out of the furnace's vents.

I leapt out of bed, and yanked the faceplate off of the furnace, but couldn't see anything amiss. Then I noticed the flames coming from behind the furnace. I grabbed the kitchen fire extinguisher, but it was a small one. When it ran out, I grabbed a bottle of Windex , ( mostly water ) and poured that down the gap. When the Windex ran out, the flames leapt up, and set the curtains on fire.

I then decided that perhaps evacuation was in order. I ran next door to my landlord's place, and alerted Fred. Fred had been a firefighter for forty years, so he told me to call 911. He ran out, saw what was happer, and came back in. I had made contact with dispatch by that time, so I handed Fred the phone, and he told them exactly what fire engines were needed..

Here in Wisconsin, Police cars have almost totally been replaced by small trucks, Explorers, and F-150s mostly. By the time things were over, I had the Fire Chief's Suburban, four police trucks, three pumpers, a tanker, a heavy rescue, an ambulance, and a snow plow. I live on a hill, and having Gall Road become covered in wet ice would not have been a Good Thing. When I create a scene, no expenses are spared.

I am the night audit at a resort that covers a square mile. We have an apart building on site, to house contractors building things. When I did get to work, I stooped by the main building, ( I run the night shift at a separate, all condo building ) . I told the manager , "Well, I am homeless " Vickie said, " No you are not, you will be spending a few nights in a J-1 dorm, until we can get you into an apartment ".

So, I won't be living outdoors!

  7. Why doesn't the Grinch like Knock-Knock jokes? Because of all the whos there.

A guy is walking his dog in a park next to a small lake. A guy comes up to him and says to him, "That's a really strange looking dog, and I can't say I've ever seen one like that. In fact, he's pretty peculiar looking." The dog owner responds, "Yes, I know, that's because he's interbred." A duck hears them, gets out of the lake and waddles up to them saying "You know who else is into bread?"
