Tried forcing it, an absolute no go, the tank is empty.
I think I'm burned out.
When I think of the past upon which the story is based, I can't focus, I'm thinking too much. Overthinking it, as it were. I'll start to research a particular facet of history, something to hang the plot on, and I drift down another path, someplace I'm not ready to go yet, if ever.
Too much in my head overcomplicates things, I guess.
So it's gonna be a while longer. Might give you a vignette or three here and there, just to keep my hand in, but the second part of the prequel is stalled. Much like the Germans outside of Leningrad in early '42.
Sigh, we'll get there. But it's going to be a while longer, gomen nasai.
In other news ...
Finally got around to seeing the movie Devotion ...
Wow, damned good. I'm sure Hollywood gooned up some of the details but overall it was impressive. Though the aerial sequences flying out of "Quonset Point" bothered me to no end. Where they were flying looked nothing like the area around Quonset, nor did it bear any similarity to Narragansett Bay. (The movie was filmed in Georgia.)
That aside (most movie goers no doubt have any idea of what Little Rhody looks like from the air) it was a superb movie. Even though you know how it ends, you still hope.
In remembrance of this Naval Aviator ...

Now if I could just find my copy of Adam Makos' book!
Hmmm, another movie and an author to peruse, thanks Sarge. There's always a need to refuel, sometimes takes longer than usual.
ReplyDeleteIf I can't entertain you, the least I can do is point you to someone who can. 😏
DeleteIn my experience you can't force it, it has to flow naturally. We can wait for our free candy.
ReplyDeleteYup, the river is dammed up somewhere. Just have to be patient, not one of my strong suits.
DeleteRelax, Sarge; it will come or it won't. Supposed to be fun for you as well as us.
ReplyDeleteGood point. It hasn't been fun for a week or so.
DeleteYou missed a great opportunity to add the Jackson Browne song of the same name! Saw him in concert with James Taylor a few years ago. Great singers, as long as I ignore their politics! haha.
ReplyDeleteTitle changed in the middle of the night, "Empty" sounded ominous, so I added the "Running On" rather late. Truthfully, I'm not a huge Jackson Browne fan, don't dislike his stuff, just don't listen to it.
DeleteReal life has to happen too. And it has to take precedent over your hobby/art. Get on with life, even if you never put another word to the stories you have done more and better writing than many of us can do. Heck, I do well to string together a coherent paragraph, much less write a novelette.
ReplyDeleteAnd sometimes (most times?) real life can wear ya down.
DeleteOften, I find the harder I push it the father away it gets. Lure your Muse back. No internet, No Bad News (it will still be there when you get back) just paper books. A little trip maybe a cruise to Mexico they're cheap lately IF you tell them to take off the "Free Unlimited Bar" (it isn't free).
ReplyDeleteWorks for me when I get the serious don't care doldrums. Screw off seriously with a fishing pole until you need to get busy again.
I tend to go intend "automaton" mode when this happens. Try not to think, just do. It usually works a little quicker than this. But this too shall pass.
DeleteCrusty Old TV Tech here. Maybe what Musie needs is a "site survey", as we called it in ye olde AFCC. A trip to Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, go over the ground, get some inspiriation. Man, I wish I had the geedus to do that, go back and see my old TDY grounds 40 years later. I'd especially like to see Berlin, I hear Tempelhof is no more. Sit in the Ardennes, quaffing Chimay, eating Pommes Frites and Boulets de Liege, see what sort of inspiration starts planting itself.
ReplyDeleteSite survey, I like the idea.
DeleteCan't believe Tempelhof is gone, sigh, "progress" I suppose.
+1 on both the book and the movie "Devotion". Amazing piece of history. And, truly, I have no idea what Rhode Island looks like from the air but I get your meaning. Re-watched "News Of The World" the other night and the scenery, although gorgeous, was most definitely not the Texas from the Panhandle to the Hill Country that I know.
ReplyDeleteThe muse may be on extended leave but will eventually return. Best to ya!
-Barry
There are days I get the feeling that the Muse went someplace exotic, drank too much and is now in some Third World jail awaiting release to the Embassy. I told her not to travel on "that" passport.
Delete"Hi! So they said I only get one call..."
DeleteHahaha! (Probably dialed the wrong number too!)
DeleteSarge, I always struggle with the "It should be fun" and "I need to write" aspects. Yes, it is a self-imposed limitation that I write like I do, but at the same time there is a sense for me that if I do not do something, I will become sadly lackadaisical about it (because I seem to be wired that way). The balance I have had to hit (for now) is assigning certain days to certain subjects, which for me allows me some flexibility in actual writing while allowing me to not have to completely generate an entirely new idea de novo - although like everything, it works until it does not work.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the report on Devotion. I remember when it came out; it seems to have disappeared from public view rather quickly.
It seems that there are certain elements in our nation these days that despise heroism and sacrifice. Where have we gone wrong?
DeleteI do not know that "we" (us) ever went wrong. We seem to live in a largely artificial world at this point, buoyed up by 80 years of post-war prosperity and only have wars that impact a very few. The cynical side of me says that only hard times (something I truly do not desire) would change the current understanding of words such as heroism and sacrifice.
DeleteYou're probably right, the hard times might forge a stronger "us," or might shatter things beyond recognition. I don't know what's next.
DeleteWhatever the result; the safe bet IS "hard times a'comin". Agree with THB; it's not " us" who've gone astray, though the enemies of our country portray us as such. We are fortunate that even if things shatter, we have the blueprint to reconstruct our Republic. The Founders had education, inspiration and Faith; they weathered some pretty "hard times" themselves to leave us with that blueprint.
DeleteAs for the opening scenes from "Devotion" I was filling my eyes with those wonderful Bearcats!
Boat Guy
The Bearcat is one of the prettiest birds to ever take to the air.
DeleteI remember seeing his namesake 1052 in Charleston.
ReplyDeleteThat's right! USS Jesse L Brown (FF-1089) Knox-class frigate. Still on active service with the Egyptian Navy as of 2018 (Damiyat).
DeleteI do admire you, and those like you, that are prolific writers. My blog festers for days in Word as additions come in random impulses. Perhaps my auto focus needs better batteries?
ReplyDeleteWell, I have days where I sit and stare at the screen. Usually some random synapse will fire and I'll write, sometimes, as you put it, the "auto focus" just won't tune!
DeleteVF-32 was in CVW-6 on the Forrestal in the late 80's. The squadron I was in, HS-15 was also part of CVW-6. 32's ready room had a picture of Ens. Brown and one of Thomas Hudner on the wall.
ReplyDeleteWith very good reason!
