Hard At Work

Not my chart of characters and story lines
(It's more complicated!)

(Source)
Perhaps "Hardly At Work" would be a better (at least more honest) title for this post.

I am going to hopefully go through what's been published and get all the characters lined up for roll call. (And perhaps a new page on the blog which I'll call "Who's Who In Sarge's WWII Epic." Not too grandiose a title, is it?)

But I've got other irons in the fire, mostly work related, which will take up some time. I actually think about this stuff at home and at work. I'm a consummate professional. (Whaddaya mean I spelled "idiot" wrong?)

My work is fascinating (to me at any rate), otherwise I wouldn't keep doing it. Interesting things are afoot and I need to stay abreast of those things. (Heh. "Afoot" and "abreast," l'anglais est une langue tellement étrange! - and yes, I'll let y'all work that one out, I know you're a clever lot, you are.)

Anyhoo, rather than being productive, I might also be playing Sniper Elite 5, or watching a movie, or perhaps even reading! (I still try and do that, don't have as much time as I used to for that, but I work it in.)

So talk quietly among yourselves, read the folks on the sidebar, and send Your Humble Scribe good thoughts. I'll get back at it soon. I promise.

Besides, this will give juvat time to read a bunch of posts all at once. I know he likes doing that, feels more like a book that way.

Right?

I thought as much ...

Ciao!

  2. “The problem with defending the purity of the English language is that English is about as pure as a cribhouse whore. We don't just borrow words; on occasion, English has pursued other languages down alleyways to beat them unconscious and rifle their pockets for new vocabulary.”

One wag opined that "English is the language we got from Norman men-at-arms trying to seduce Saxon barmaids."

    1. Yup, English is a conglomerate of everything we find useful.

      Love that last bit.

  3. Sarge, one of the things studying Anglo-Saxon has made me conscious of is that we use a great many words that are not strictly "English". It happens in other languages as well; it did not bother me so much until I was using my Duolingo for Japanese and all of sudden it started using words which are English derivations for which I know there are Japanese terms. I am certainly not against keeping a language in archaic form for the sake of doing so; at the same time I think we have become too quick in our willingness to just adopt a version of a different word rather than looking for an English equivalent (or adapting one, as I understanding some languages such as Icelandic have done).

Heh heh. "Consumate professional". I have been known to break out in song during meetings...

    2. Sarge, depending on whom you talk to I am either the highlight of meetings or an HR disaster waiting to happen.

  4. Shooter video games for the computer, never done that. Well I did mess around with Doom 95 WAY back when on a work computer.
Is there a good game for a beginner to try?

    1. Most of the newer 1st-person shooter games (technically Sniper Elite is "over-the-shoulder" view unless you're actually shooting) have very easy to learn and use interfaces. w-a-s-d to move, mouse to point, mouse buttons to aim and shoot, usually you can change weapons via the mouse wheel (which also is a third button, or should be). The basics haven't changed since DOOM. SNiper ELite 5 is my go to. (The earlier versions are good, 4 especially).

I have gamed on a console but prefer doing it on a PC.

  5. Crusty Old TV Tech here. OK, I guess Musie needs a break now and again, as do we all. R&R back in Hawaii, or some other tropical locale sounds about right. Lots of Rum and Coca Coooola, like the song says.

As for English, not only is it Saxon/Angle/Jute and Norman French, but they robbed the Scotsmen and Irishmen (and Cornish, and Welsh) blind, and for good measure, stole some from the real Norsemen up in the North. Yep, it is quite the conglomeration!

  6. Hey Sarge, sorry I haven't relieved you of some daily posting efforts, just been taking care of some stuff after my long trip. I will get to it eventually though. Btw, for some reason I'm unable to comment from my desk, and I tend to forget after I get out to my phone. So I haven't been commenting much either.

    1. Ah, you're back from Ireland. Looked like a great trip!

As to helping out, don't worry about it, when you've got something, you've got something. You're posts are like ice cream, can't have it every day (and why not) but it's special when you get it!

Commenting from your computer at work might be verboten by your organization. I can't get to certain sites now that we've instituted a new (and very stupid) internet policy where I labor.

  7. Sarge,
While I appreciate the " read a bunch of posts all at once" offer, the reality is unless there are a bunch of unread chapters...

I'm not disciplined enough to hold off reading your post(s) until there are several to read in a row. So, were I a mean Boss, I'd say "Get back to work and stop slacking!"

Instead, I'll just patiently wait for the next posting.
