Well, Campers....For those of you who are still wearing their winter parkas, let me warm you up. Highs down here in lovely Texas by the Sea have been in the high 70s and low 80's for a few weeks. Absolutely lovely.
View of the property from our front door |
Ain't it?
On the however side, however, there have been a few of what we weather cognecenti call thunderstorms that occurred. One last week delivered a very nice deluge of about 2" of rain on us. It took about 20 minutes. I say very nice as a friend of ours living about 20 miles North of us reported 8" of water in his garage.
Not quite so nice.
Unfortunately, the 2 inches we had didn't even make it in to our two stockponds. (Our stockponds are in the first line of slightly darker green trees (mesquite) beyond the grass in the photo above.) Still no standing water in the ponds. Rats!
Right now as I look out my office window to make an official weather observation, Visibiliity is unlimited and no clouds in sight. Wind is about 5 knots. Temp is in the 80's.
However, the forecast for tomorrow is 104⁰ and Tuesday it's supposed to be 107⁰.
Guess I'll be running through the sprinkler in my natural swimsuit. (Try and get THAT picture out of your mind, Beans!)
On a related note, most of you know we have a herd of 4 dogs, a rat terrier (emphasis on the rat), a Transylvania hound (Old, blind and deaf, gonna miss her sometime soon) and two Great Pyrenees (they're pretty good, but not great. I'll refer to them as Good Pyrenees AKA GPs). Well, the first two dogs are short hairs. The GPs well... As mentioned above, it's pretty warm down here, and GPs are bred to herd sheep in the Pyrenees Mountains where the high temperature record, I believe, is about 32⁰ F. So, they get uncomfortable when outside.
So, Mrs J decided some pre-emptive action should be taken.
One of our Vet's technicians has a side job of Canine Hair styling, (Ok Beans, she shaves dogs). Mrs J called and got on her schedule for this past Saturday. On arrival, we were concerned about the dog's reactions.
I mean, everytime they've been to the vet, things happened that they didn't enjoy. Kennelling, Shots, Meds etc. So they would get a little tense when they recognized any of the Vet Team. Can't say I blamed them.
No, this isn't the dog, just the fur |
However, this time the GP's didn't even bark. Couple of sniffs of the groomer, then they went over and laid down on the floor.
Nor is this the dog, just the fur |
About 2 hours later (yes Beans it took a couple of hours.) all was done. Another hour of sweeping and all the fur was scooped up.
Treats, Mom? We were good dogs! |
They seem very happy now. Cooler also.
As to the other adventure in our life now, moving. We're pretty well done prepping the guest houses for viewing by potential buyers. The main house is progressing.
Mrs J is "ruthless". As an observation, I think junk procreates to fill available space. I've stopped asking if we are going to "keep this?" No is usually the answer.
Since
we'd lived in our previous house for ~20 years and this house for 5,
well....Thank goodness I own a pickup truck. Myself, it and the trash
bin are becoming pretty good friends.
Our neighborhood dumpster gets emptied every Wednesday around noon. My neighbors have come to realize they have from Wednesday PM to Tuesday PM to empty their trash. Wednesday AM the dumpster seems to magically procreate trash and fill itself up to capacity.
Also, Goodwill and several other charities are VERY happy to see us pull up to their door.
C’est la vie!
To end on a high note, finally, I got the Front Door refinishing project finished. I think it turned out pretty well.
But, I've got to say, the house is really starting to be very nicely displayed. So, hopefully/prayerfully, it gets an acceptable offer fairly quickly. That would make things a lot easier on the "Things to worry about" meter!
Peace out, y'all!
Next time you shave the dogs, get some of those large googly-eyes thingies and put them on the pile for the pick. And two hours? What, no sheep shearers anywhere in your area? Just joking, of course, but...
ReplyDeleteMy dog does a twice-yearly shed, where he blows his whole coat in a 2-week period. Blows it all over the bed, the floor, the walls, the very air... Used to be really bad when Mrs. Andrew and I had a cat house. Real cats, used to show them. Fur everywhere. No way around it. Glad those days are over.
Any word on the new digs?
Beans, on the latter, no still getting the house ready to sell. Once it’s on the market we’ll make a contingency offer and see what happens then. As I said, a lot of hoops to jump.

Lately I've been taking our two Siberian Huskies for "Morning Drives" when I get home from work...Spring, shedding! Fine fluffy hair everywhere. I'll need two shop Vac's to clear the hair.
ReplyDeleteRemember, we are their whole world...
DV,
DeleteYep, we may be their whole world. But…they’re a large part of ours also.

That's enough cut-off fur to make someone a fur coat.......geeeez. That front door.....nice.......very nice juvat. That front doorway is just lacking something though.....uh....well... arrow slits to pour fire into attackers, yes!
ReplyDeleteNylon,
DeleteAt LEAST one, However, there were several sticker burrs in the midst of the piles. The dogs were happy they were gone. As am I most were found the hard way while giving them a scratch. A haircut is a much more efficient way of removing them.

entry looks super
ReplyDeleteThanks, yeah I’m pretty happy with it and more importantly, so is Mrs J
Deletejuvat
The dogs look different! If they say there for it they must be happy!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the rest of the week...
Rob, They really do, don’t they?
DeleteThis could become a “Rites of Spring” ritual

The door looks great, Juvat.
ReplyDeleteHaving been back to New Home 2.0 and having seen the pile of things that still remain to be packed/brought/given away, I sympathize. I keep reminding myself now I need to have less, not more.
THBB
DeleteI hear ya, brother! But, it is hard to get rid of a lot of stuff with memories attached. Best to just close your eyes and toss. Then…when you’re out at the dumpster, retrieve the stuff you actually want. If you’re willing to dumpster dive, the object must be worth saving.
That’s my modus operandi anyhow. I’ve retrieved some, but not a lot. The dumpster is a difficult (and stinky) adversary.

Having had 2 shelties in the past, I can totally sympathize with the whole "Spring is here, time to blow our coats" routine. I would make appointments with the groomer for a bath/blow-out and thinning for both of them every couple of months. Used to tell the groomer she was my most favorite housekeeper, as it would be a couple of weeks before they would shed even a little bit. Never shaved them down tho. My folks had a Wheaten Terrior who Mom did get shaved, the first time he was about 8 months old...he looked sooo embarrassed for about a week, and my son, who was about 4 at the time cried like crazy as he thought Gramma had gotten rid of Sammy as he truly looked nothing like he had before.
ReplyDeleteThe front door looks great!!
I promise, if I could send some of the approximately 12" of rain I have received in the past 10 days, I would ship it down post-express!! We have had sunshine for two and a half days so far, and I STILL have standing water in the back yard. The lawn dudes can only mow half of the back yard, and the front still squishes underfoot as well. I would
We would appreciate that 12" offer. Spaced into 2" a day over 6 or 7 days, of course, wouldn't want Noah's ark to make a return visit.
DeleteCheers,
juvat
Stupid computer!! I would really like to get into my garden, but I think it will need to have no rain for about 2 weeks before I can do so.
ReplyDeleteAnd I won't even talk about the joys of packing/moving except to say You have my sympathy Sir!!
Suz
As a retired computer guy and with two degrees in computer science, I am forced to say that computers are neither smart nor stupid. They merely obey their operators commands to the letter (AKA Keystroke). Short of a power failure of course.
DeleteThat having been siad, even the must telented computer guy makes a mistak occasionally. Just sayin" I feel your pain!

A cousin and her husband raise Alpacas. Can't seem to stop seeing those dogs as freshly sheared Alpacas.
ReplyDeleteWSF,
DeleteThey do look a bit like that, don't they?
juvat
Vis-a-vis the GPs, holy moly, that's a lot of hair!
ReplyDeleteFront door looks grand!
Sarge,
DeleteYeah it is, an extra large lawn cuttings bag to take it all. I was impressed.
Thanks, I think so also. Took a while.

Hopefully you'll have no shortage of California refugees flush with real estate cash that will get into a bidding war for your place.
ReplyDeleteI realize that would be better for you, than for Texas in general, but what can you do?
DeleteYes, well....I've heard that the Texas Legislature is proposing a bill that will forbid Californians from ever saying "When we lived in California we did things this way...." I think it also includes a clause giving the Texan the right to punch him/her in the nose with no legal troubles thereafter. My current retort is "Then go Back!"
Deletejuvat
You're right, a bidding war would be nice!
Deletejuvat
Any recovering Californian saying crap like that is clearly still an addict and not worthy of living in Texas.
DeleteTuna, totally agree. Yet I’ve heard it. PMO, badly!
Deletejuvat
That front door is great! What talent!
ReplyDeleteAs for the pooches' trimmings. Good grief! Can you sell that you a sheep farmer to adulterate next year's wool? Or maybe spin it your self for a nice beige shirt?
Fuzz, D4
Thanks, Fuzz. As to the rest…hmmmm! Might have to look in to those options!
Deletejuvat
Juvat, just got to the blog late as usual. When we were running livestock and had the GP's as guard dogs for the goats, we trimmed them in the summer. Never seen one of 'em buck naked till I got to the picture!
ReplyDeleteCletus
Cletus, I’d say it’s more “down to their skivvies”. But, they are happier!
