What a Month It Was ...

No those standing cranes are NOT native to this region.
(But they look cool ...)

Hi, remember me?

Yup, I've been away from the keyboard for about a month, at least it feels that way. Seems I've been down in Maryland rather a lot lately. Which means grandkids, which is a good thing, a very good thing.

Now back in July you might recall me regaling you with tales of LUSH and her progeny visiting and The Nuke with her whole tribe at the same time. Much fun was had though I did catch some vile bug which lingers still. That hasn't been much fun. But it's the vicissitudes of aging, I suppose. (Those of you wishing to offer me advice at this point, here's a tip - write out your comment, then delete it. I'm a big boy now, whatever advice you might give I will ignore, guaranteed. It's just the way I am, set in my ways and all. But thanks for playing.)

Anyhoo.

It all started with a call from The Nuke, due to Tuttle needing to travel for work, and her being needed in Washington DC for a number of late meetings which would preclude her from picking up the boys from camp/day care, someone was needed to provide limo service for the grandsons. I was an obvious candidate.

So multiple trips to Maryland and back later, I get a few weeks respite. I really need them. I ain't as young as I used to be!

But those trips convinced me that we, as Americans, are among the worst drivers on the planet. Don't feel bad now, we're tied for second with a number of countries. There are certain countries in Europe and Asia where the automobile is not something the locals seem all that familiar with. Who are the best drivers on the planet?

Here's a clue, they speak German.

Anyhoo.

Juvat has done a great job keeping the blog going. He's republished a number of his classic tales, most involve his service in the Air Force, most involve flying. All good stories which was the reason I hired him. (He's still bitching about the pay! Hahaha!)

So well done, juvat. Bravo Zulu in Navy-speak and Sierra Hotel in Old AF-speak. Yeah, we actually used to talk like that.

So I'm back. Not sure how long it will be before there's any new fiction, as I mentioned a while back the "Prequel" is in the editing process so I can start writing about WWII from December of 1941 to June of 1944. I miss the old characters from Almost a Lifetime, this is a way of writing about them some more.

Anyhoo, it's off to breakfast with a couple of dear friends from the old days of naval combat systems. I'll have something for Sunday as well, so juvat, you can stand down until Monday.

Be seeing you.

  1. Good to read that you survived the US highway system, the grandkids, and that bug Sarge....well....so far........:)

  2. Welcome back! You can see that we didn't burn it down, and we patched all the holes in the walls.

Juvat did earn a Tare Victor George. I think you should allow him to paint a gold E on his keyboard.

  3. Sarge, Glad you had a good time with your family! Glad to assist. Also somewhat glad you’re back in the saddle! Publishing once a week is easy peasy. Publishing once a day for a couple of weeks was, shall we say, challenging. I don’t know how you’ve done it all these years. But I enjoy your posts so don’t stop. Please!

  4. Juvat did a great job, Sarge. You should double his pay.

I have always found editing to be the work of the Devil, which may explain why I am so terrible at it.

  5. Sounds like you had fun with your happy little disease vectors.

As to driving, I do not see that down here even in Gainesville (Alachuacountystan, capital Gainesgrad)(which is going through a colonoscopy via Florida's version of DOGE, which is Fiscal Accountability of Florida Office (FAFO, we have humor here.)) So don't know what's wrong with traffic up there (yes, I do, but it's not good to print.)

Just so you know, Blogger's been hitting a lot of blogs for conduct unbecoming even though the conduct isn't unbecoming. You might need to muzzle Tuna... ;)

    1. I find it hard to believe that Floridians know how to drive. Not in my experience.

    2. Floridians do know how to drive, even in almost white-out conditions during tropical storms. It's all the jerks from the North and the vacationers and the snowbirds from Canada.

Seriously, we do know how to drive. And our FHP and Sheriffs do a bang-up job enforcing reasonable speeding over the limit. And we have a 100mph+ super speeder law that makes it an arrestable offense.

    3. Well, maybe you're doing something right down there.

  6. Welcome back, Sarge! Juvat did indeed perform admirably at the Free Ice Cream Machine and his "There I was..." stuff was eminently worth rereading.
It's good when we can help the progeny out with their progeny. Double good when the tasks are limited.
While American driving can be BAD; you are in the part of the country where it is the worst. Having been sent to two very good driving schools at taxpayers expense - the necessity of which was subsequently proven - I am both wary and critical. Having experience with the German Speakers on the road and they used to be pretty good, The recent cultural invasion has rendered the experience less than it once was, however.
What has made the navigation of our roads and streets far worse is of course the ( numerous expletives deleted) cell phone exacerbated by the increasing likelihood of stoned drivers.
    Glad you returned.

    1. I think your explanation as to why some drivers suck is spot on.

  7. Glad your back and the backyard is a work of art. But I have a question as a civilian. I was adopted by a man who married my mother. He had been in WW2 for the entire war and it is hard to pinpoint where he enlisted because back in the late '30s and early '40s he followed the crops and worked '"getting the crops in". Common in that time. His home point I have, but his middle name always caused confusion. Along with the fact that he found out in his 40's that the day he used for birthdays is not the day he was born. So when I try and get into army records. I can't match whatever they are looking for but I have his death cert and using that isn't getting me anywhere. I'm hoping maybe one of your many readers have some suggestions. I do know that when he married my mother within 3 years he had zero army anything in the house. Never, ever said a word in his entire life about the war. Stories in the family, very hush, hush said he was a bomber in the Pacific and mustered out in Europe and when both died and I had to deal with all the packing there was no indication of any military items.

  9. When I saw this the first thing in my mind was "The Princess Bride"

    1. I'm not that familiar with the film, saw it once, a long time ago, may have to re-watch it at some point. Or not.

    2. Almost as good as the Monty Python series.

Not quite as good as your descriptions of battle scenes and the aftermath.
