Give Sarge a Break!

OK, Folks, as you are aware, Sarge and his Muse are taking a short (we hope) break in the blog writing.  I thought I'd give him a break an follow up my normal Monday post with another, So  you get a twofer from me.

I want to thank all the folks that wished me well after my accident.  I'm OK, still in a bit of pain and wearing a neck brace.  My short term memory is pretty well shot. Also, I'm on Doctor's orders to take it easy, not lift anything more than 5 pounds and wear the brace for 5 more weeks.  Oh yeah, I can't drive for 6 months due to the black out that caused the accident.

It's quite comfortable...Not!

My recommendation to y'all is avoid a traffic accident.

Anyhow all the above makes the upcoming move (which occurs in less than a month) a bit difficult.  Mrs J is doing yeoman's work to get things separated and boxed up.  Separated because we're building a house in College Station on some property we bought south of town.

Unfortunately, building a house on bare property is not an instantaneous thing.  The estimate is 8 months to a year.  So...We're renting a smallish house in town.  Yard is fenced and big enough for the dogs which is important as they think they are guard dogs.  Our neighbors are likely to try hard to influence the speeding up of our new house's construction.

Atticus, Leader of the pack. Very good dog!

Gryndll the intruder alarm, barks at birds and the wind among other things

Annie, keeps folks warm at night.  Yes, that would be the Mrs.,  AKA "the Boss "

Sadly, there was a fourth up until a week ago.  Cooper was a great dog.  We'll miss her, Passed away in her sleep.

Anyhow, we'll be living in the rental for a while.  It's quite a bit smaller than our current dwelling (as well as the new home), so we need to pick and choose what will go in it, instead of into storage for a while.  Packed up my hand tools and small power tools (Drill, Circular Saw etc), but the table saw, work bench and a few others will get a break and rest in storage.  I did, however, include my lathe as a "take to the house" tool.  My logical argument to Mrs J was "Turning wood into sawdust while attempting to make a pen is relaxing to me."

She couldn't stop laughing long enough to say no to me.  Victory!!

So, when the house is built, and the water, sewage and electricity attached. we'll move in and that will be the final move after about 40 in my lifetime.  Military Brat, College Dorms, and the Air Force.taught me a lot about moving.  I will expend the remainder of those memories on this one.

Once the house is built, they'll build a smaller one and a Barn.  Then my Brother will join us as well as the horses, Cabernet and Merlot.  While I like Wine, they were named that by the Animal Rescue Folks before we got them.  Mrs J and I just thought it was destiny, so we adopted them.  They're good horses.

Merlot

Cabernet

No Beans, based on my neck from the prior episode and this one, I don't ride them.  They're "pasture ponies", but I enjoy talking to them while I'm feeding them, They listen and don't interject with opposing opinions.

But with my Brother and their arrival on the property. the move will be complete and the "Gang" will be reunited.

  1. Call it a "gorget" https://www.armourandswords.com/p-4044-medieval-bevor-with-gorget.aspx?srsltid=AfmBOoqltb96KCPBZr2B7ENl306KdqtB97GWPYO3MDV_bYrdt6KVE7OM rather than "neck brace." Maybe paint it gun metal grey or silver. Gives it a martial air. Thanks for the update on your healing. Slow and steady, sir.

Sounds like Mrs. J is laboring like a stakhanovite to get y'all packed up. Better get her something really special once the dust settles.

    1. Joe, hadn’t thought of that! However, cool as it may be, it’s still a pain in the neck! Using both meanings of the phrase, unfortunately!

    1. Thanks Nylon. I think I can handle the neck brace for 3 or 4 more weeks, but 5 months more of no driving???? I’m not sure about that! Honey will you take me to Lowes?

  4. We have a Prime Minister, Dreary Keiry Starmer, who seems to be without merit. Save one. When he was a prosperous lawyer he bought a paddock next to the house of his old, crippled mother, and grazed donkeys on it for her pleasure.

This is probably the only "nice" thing I will ever say about the wretched man.

    1. Well once the new house is built and fenced in, Cabernet and Merlot will be rescued and free to roam the property!

  5. I am glad you are healing, and your brain seems to be working just fine.
I have always wanted to learn how to use a lathe.

I have always thought" Merlot " sounds like it should be a type of duck.

Well…it is working better, but I am forgetting the little things, which are just big enough to be irritating. Like “What are we having for dinner?” Bad enough when you’re asking the wife, worse when you’re supposed to be cooking.
      However, things ARE getting better.

  6. Condolences on your loss of Cooper. Even when they are not the only one, ya still miss the one who has gone ahead.
Neck braces are like any other brace/splint/cast---they all are a major drag!! But on the plus side--it is November in TX, not July...because hot and sweaty while wearing a neck brace is ABSOLUTELY no fun!!
I have to get some fireplace tools for my fireplace...and was wondering where to start looking...my son's suggestion was Lowe's, and I immediately thought of you! ;) And, no, I haven't gotten there yet.
Hang in there!! It will get better, it just takes application of tincture of time.

  7. I am enjoying this wee vacation from the blog. I'm recovering my strength and am hoping that the Muse will return soon.

I am saddened by the loss of Cooper, our companion animals are gifts from God and to lose one is hard.

Hopefully you continue to mend and will be your old self again. I'd also like to note that behind your noble head, on the wall of your domicile, I see a painting of a Spitfire, unless I am very much mistaken. One of my, if not the most, favorite aircraft.

Get well, brother, and thanks for this break from the action for me.

    1. What an eye! Yes it is a painting of a Spitfire one of my most favorite aircraft I haven’t flown.you only get one guess which is the one in the other category.

    3. Well. It might start with a P. But that would be third on the list. #1 starts wit an F

  8. Suz,
Yeah she was a great dog, but so are the rest.
It’s been in the mid 80s the last few days, so I know what you mean. The AC has done well at keeping the sweaty side of things under control. The stroll out to the barn to feed the horses warms things up. Thanks to a neighbor, I just have to feed them grain. He and his tractor moved to round bales into the paddock. In case you were going to put on your nurse hat and remind me not to lift more than 5 pounds. ;-)

    1. Good to know ya are not picking up hay rounds!! Cause they typically weigh a LOT more than 5 pounds. lol. Tractors are handy for doing things like that, but you probably aren't allowed on any tractors yet...
Do wish I lived closer. I could show up and be hands and feet for Mrs J to help with packing up. It's the sorting what to pack for the rental house and what to put into long term storage until the house is built that's the biggest pain in my experience.
"Remind" you...a much nicer way to say nag. It's the knee-jerk response to seeing someone we like doing something we KNOW is gonna hurt more and slow down their healing. Doctors, and nurses, really do have good physical reasons for all of the "don't do's" that we always harp on. But it still is a free country, and folks still have the freedom to make poor choices...as long as they know it will slow down the healing, and extend the entire process but they still want to do it...I have said "Go for it, just don't complain later."
However, you strike me as the kinda fellow who is willing to believe the stove is hot so you shouldn't touch it instead of someone who has to touch it anyway. Lol. But it is startling how little 5 pounds really is, isn't it?

  9. I am sorry to hear about Cooper. Pets. We do not deserve them.

On the brighter side, glade to hear that you are on the mend. Standard stuff about taking it easy, etc. etc. I am somewhat behind you, but I am shocked at how much less well I "recover" after things now.

Having moved from a larger house to a temporary domicile, I wish nothing but good luck and the best. We have what we have with us, plus a storage locker in New Home where our house is, plus items at my parents' place for when we finally "find" a place. Having to fit a house into a small place is both ridiculous and humorous; while we have everything we really need, there have been several things where we look and look and then go "Ah yes, I think that is back in New Home". Here is hoping a year passes quickly and everything comes back together smoothly.

  11. You're a good man to help out (blogging) when you have plenty of excuses not to. Your wife though gets a lot of credit for all the yeoman's work and her 6 month TDY stint as Staff Driver for you. I guess the "for better or for worse, in sickness and in health" is a real thing! Anyway, continuing to pray, and I'll add your wife for putting up with you.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Are the ponies ride-able at all? Seems like a wonderful thing for the grandkids when they get a bit older.

  12. Crusty Old TV Tech here. "Reading the mail" on the net, catching up...oh wow Juvat, prayers for a speedy recovery. Yes, traffic accidents are much to be avoided, whatever the cause. And, you may be cheered by the thought, at least it's not a body brace! Been there, suffered that, would not wish it on anyone short of Old Scratch himself. Condolences on loss of a good friend pup. They do worm their way into your heart, don't they?
